Botanist and microscopist, discoverer of the cell nucleus and of "Brownian" motion.
Robert Brown and the Cell Nucleus http://www.sciences.demon.co.uk/wbbrownb.htm
Importantly, this site contains a paper by Brian J. Ford in which he discusses at length the quality of Brown's original microscope and whether or not Brown could have made the discoveries he claimed. Images made by Ford with Brown's original microscope are reproduced, including an image of orchid epithelium clearly showing nuclei and a short video of Brownian motion of fat droplets in milk. Biographical details include Brown's discovery of the physical, as opposed to biological, nature of the motion that bears his name, and of his voyages to New Holland (now Australia) with Joseph Banks and Matthew Flinders. There is also an extensive bibliography on Robert Brown and Brownian motion.

26. History Of Horticulture - Brown, Robert 1773-1858
brown, robert 17731858. robert brown was born in Montrose, Scotland. Additionalinformation about robert brown may be found on the Internet. robert brown.

Brown, Robert 1773-1858 R obert Brown was born in Montrose, Scotland. His life was also completely associated with botanical research. At 32 he returned from Australia with plant specimens. It has been stated that "thereafter nothing was allowed to divert his eye from his microscope and his books." In 1827 he made a deal with the trustees of the British Museum that if he transferred the Bank's collection to the museum he was to be appointed "keeper." These collections now are located in the magnificent herbarium of the University of London and are the authority of the systematic work in Britain to the present day. While "keeper" of the Botanical Department of the British Museum he examined collections obtained from all parts of the world. These formed the basis for a series of monographs and papers explaining the natural affinities, geographical distributions, morphology and anatomy of the Plant Kingdom. He announced the existence of the cell nucleus and the distinction between gymnosperms and Angiosperms and the so-called "Brownian" movement of small particles suspended in liquids. It has been stated that "nearly every group of flowering plants today bears the mark of this genius."

    BURNING MAN: A NEW CIVILIZATION
Black Rock City, the site of Burning Man, can be seen right after you leave the town of Gerlach. It's only 4 miles away. It reaches clear across the ancient lake bed. The size is overwhelming. 20,000 people creating a city that lasts a week and is then completely obliterated to be created once again the following year.
A festival of Birth Death and Renewal. A celebration of this kind on this scale has not been created for hundreds of years. The fact that Burning Man has survived for 12 years is astonishing. The most exhilarating aspect is its freedom from corporate sponsorship.
People are doing what they're doing for their own pleasure. They are not conducting careers. When I got to Gerlach I could see the dust storm on the Playa. It was a thick cloud that seemed to be about 20 feet high and it reached across the lake bed which was several miles wide. I went through the Black Rock City Welcoming Gate and drove to a site where I attempted to pitch my tent, but the wind was intense. I was being sandblasted with very large grains of gravel like sand!

    TRISHA BROWN/ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG
In 1954, the artist Robert Rauschenberg began to design sets, costumes, and lighting for performances by the Merce Cunningham and Paul Taylor dance companies. Ahe became Cunningham's main designer in 1961 and traveled with the company through 1964. In the early 1960s, Rauschenberg began to create an dperform his own works and Trisha Brown participated in some of these events in 1965, initiating a long collaboration. The sets and costumes for Glacial Decoy (1979) are the first he designed for her. Brown and Rauschenberg continued to collaborate with Set and Reset in 1983, and Astral Convertible in 1989. Both artists thrive on the collaborative process, particulary in the realm of performance, which allows for chance events. Rauschenberg has extended such collaborations into his studio, where some of his designs for the stage have resulted in a series of related prints, drawings, photographs, sculptures, or paintings.

    40. In The Brothels Of Modernism Picasso And Joyce
Essay by robert Scholes, arguing that the brothel was a prime theatrical space for male modernists.
    http://www.modcult.brown.edu/people/scholes/Pic_Joy/Part_1_340.html
In the Brothel of Modernism: Picasso and Joyce
    by Robert Scholes
    Part 1
Hey what! You here, dear fellow! You, in a house of ill fame? You, the drinker of quintessences! You, the ambrosia eater? Really, this takes me by surprise.
    (Charles Baudelaire, "Loss of Halo,"
But it is precisely modernity that is always quoting primeval history. This happens through the ambiguity attending the social relationships and products of this epoch. Ambiguity is the pictorial image of dialectics, the law of dialectics seen at a standstill. This standstill is utopia and the dialectical image therefore a dream image. Such an image is presented by the pure commodity: as fetish. Such an image are the arcades, which are both house and stars. Such an image is the prostitute, who is saleswoman and wares in one.
    (Walter Benjamin, Reflections
A few months after Picasso was born, in February of 1882, a boy was born in Dublin, Ireland who was destined to share with Picasso a central position in modernism. Christened James Augustine Joyce, he was exceptionally gifted as a writer, as precocious with words as Picasso was with visual forms. He, too, was drawn to Paris, arriving there first in the same year as Picasso but not settling there until after the first World War. He did not become rich, but he did become a figure as dominant in modern letters as Picasso was in visual art, whose relelentless formal innovations kept the rest of the literary world panting helplessly behind him. It is a curious fact that these two men, born in Catholic countries far from the centers of culture and power in modern Europe, came to live in Paris, the city that Walter Benjamin called "The Capitol of the Nineteenth Century," and helped to make it the capitol of modernism as well.
