Scottish botanist who noted the nucleus in orchids in 1831. Further researches showed that nuclei were present in many plants, but Brown did not believe them to be an essential part of the tissue. Brown was the first to separate plants into angiosperms and gymnosperms. He discovered the random thermal motion of pollen grains suspended in water in 1827. The effect, now called Brownian motion, is visible evidence for the kinetic theory, as was shown by Einstein . Brownian motion was used by Perrin to provide two independent methods from which Boltzmann's constant could be determined. Einstein Perrin

  • BACKGROUND
  • In an April 9, 1999 initial decision, the administrative judge sustained the appellant’s removal on the charge of unauthorized absence. Initial Decision at 1-2. JERRY BROWN, ROBERT C. BOBB HEADLINE FINAL PROGRAM ON CITIES MARCH 29 AT UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND
March 23, 2001 Oakland Mayor Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown and city manager Robert C. Bobb will discuss their city's experiment with the strong mayor form of government March 29 in the final event of this year's Jepson Leadership Forum at the University of Richmond. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Jepson Alumni Center. Tickets are free and can be reserved by calling 289-8980. Brown was California's governor from 1974-1982 and has been Oakland's mayor since January 1999. Bobb was city manager of Richmond for 11 years before taking the Oakland post in 1997. In his mayoral inauguration speech, Brown promised to reduce crime, repopulate downtown, create public charter schools and advance the arts. He also struck a partnership with Bobb, whose strengths in economic development many credit with the return of businesses to downtown Oakland. Both Brown and Bobb have worked to break up the gridlock that often stymied initiatives under the old council-manager form of government. The event is sponsored by the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. Brown and Bobb's appearance caps a year-long look at "Views and Voices on the City" that brought author Jonathan Kozol, former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, Charleston, S.C., police chief Reuben Greenberg and other figures to speak on campus.

    Morning News staff reporter
Lt. Robert W. Brown of Erie, imprisoned in a German war camp near the Baltic Sea, listened on a handmade radio and charted the progress of the invasion of Normandy. Brown and his American comrades in the German prison camp knew that if the landing and the assault were successful, the war would end and they would be going home. Sometime.
Some English prisoners bribed German soldiers for radio parts and built their own. They listened to BBC broadcasts and "knew more about the war than the Germans did.''
Months later, the Russians came, knocked down all the fences and brought cattle to eat and vodka to drink
Brown became a prisoner in December 1943. He had been an Army Air Force fighter pilot flying a single-seat P-38 Lightning for the 338th Fighter Squadron out of England to Germany. "We had two engines to take care of and one man. It was sort of a complicated ship, but a nice ship,'' he said. Their mission was to protect the American bombers. About 100 P-38s would protect 600 bombers.
"We just kept flying over top of them,'' Brown recalled. Most missions lasted about three hours, but he remembers one that was seven hours.

Aircraft/Vehicle/Ground: F111A "Aardvark" Other Personnel In Incident: Robert D. Morrissey (missing) REMARKS: SYNOPSIS: The General Dynamics state-of-the-art variable-geometry wing F111 Aardvark was first used in Southeast Asia in March 1968 during Operation Combat Lancer. However, because of problems that surfaced during initial combat evaluation, it was withdrawn from the war zone later that year. This sophisticated aircraft returned to Southeast Asia in 1972 and flew regular combat missions from then on. One of the innovations which made the F111 unique was that for the first time the two-man crew, who sat side by side rather than the standard front seat/back seat configuration, ejected together inside a crew capsule rather than individually in an ejection seat. This design was being "field tested" as a prototype crew capsule for NASA and the US space program. Another innovation of the F111 was its terrain following radar (TFR), which reads the terrain ahead and flies over any obstructions. This feature made it an ideal night, all weather, low-level strike aircraft. On 7 November 1972, then Major Robert M. Brown, pilot, and Major Robert D. Morrissey, weapons systems officer, comprised the crew of an F111A, call sign was "Whaler 57." At 0219 hours they departed Takhli Airbase, Thailand on a single aircraft strike mission. Their target was the Luat Son Highway ferry and ford nestled in a populated and forested area where the highway crossed over the river approximately 24 miles south of the major port city of Dong Hoi, 10 miles southeast of the coastline and 9 miles north of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam.

In 1801 he went as a naturalist on one of Matthew Flinders's expeditions to Australia, returning (1805) to England with valuable collections. In his Prodromus florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen (1810) he described Australian flora. A leading botanist of his day, he served as librarian to the Linnaean Society and to Sir Joseph Banks and later as curator at the British Museum. He observed Brownian movement in 1827, discovered the cell nucleus in 1831, and was the first to recognize gymnosperm as a distinct angiosperm. His studies of several plant families and of pollen were also notable. Brown, Olympia
