T S ome years ago when I was staying at a hotel in Orange County, California, I picked up the hotel guidebook and I read this: "Standing at the plaza at the intersection of Chapman and Glassall Avenues in Orange is like journeying back to your grandparents' neighborhood—that pleasant feeling of familiarity takes hold. It’s all here—the soda fountain and the corner drugstore, Victorian houses, park benches detailed in wrought iron—and it's all real." F F rom the great silent comedies of Harry Langdon, which Capra directed in the 1920s, through the Depression years, one can find in Capra's films, as Bob Toplin said, an emphasis upon the little guy struggling against the faceless impersonal system. Introduction Next JMMH O n January 9, 1999, during the annual American Historical Association (AHA) meeting in Washington DC, The Popular Culture Association, , and the AHA co-sponsored a conference session on the films and legacy of Frank Capra. The session was titled "Frank Capra's Populism: Timebound or Timeless?" Capra's films have made an indelible impact on 20th-century America, serving as both commentaries on and artifacts of American culture. Few historians are more able and competent to analyze them than Robert Brent Toplin, Lawrence Levine, and Dan T. Carter. We obtained permission from all three to tape their presentations and to utilize their talks in The JMMH this was the one we wanted to showcase. Those who later heard our recordings heartily agreed with us. W e are especially proud of this piece, not only because of the high quality of the talks, but because re -presenting the Capra joint session in an enhanced multimedia format, including film excerpts, demonstrates clearly the unique opportunities hypermedia provides for the scholarly analysis and review of non-textual material. P lease note that we have transcribed the presentations as they were delivered have added, wherever possible and with the presenters' cooperation, brief reference notes placed

    Frank Capra
    Rain or Shine
Capra's early sound film Rain or Shine (1930) deals with a circus. Most of the first hour of the film is a chance for the team of Broadway comics led by Joe Cook to run amok. They are the poor man's equivalent of the Marx Brothers. Joe Cook is fast talking like Groucho, and one of the other three is largely silent, like Harpo. Mainly this bunch is not that skillful, and makes one appreciate the Marx Brothers more. They do well however, in their circus finale, when they do comedy acrobatics. Capra like entrances. His characters weave their way through a country club dining room in one graceful shot, which is repeated from the same angle, framed by palm trees, when the characters leave. There are also many long shots of the circus tent itself during performances. One can see the entire geometry of the tent in full view, with audience, circus rings, entrances and paths between them all laid out in detail. The camera seems close enough to make everything seem large, vivid and easy to follow. It is very graceful filming. One can also see the tent as well, the flag poles that support it, and every circus performer in the background.
    Crowd Scenes
Capra's scenes include the audience in detail. You can see each individual person in the crowd. At first this seems heart warming, with the audience laughing at the performer's antics. Later in the film, when the crowd turns ugly, they seem like an overwhelming menacing presence. There is a claustrophobic effect, and a sense that everyone is trapped together in one shot, and that no one can escape the ugly dynamics of the situation.

    The Life of Frank Capra
Frank Capra was born in Sicily in 1897 before immigrating to the Los Angeles with his family in 1903. He earned a college degree in chemical engineering, but later went to work as a gag writer for Hal Roach and then Mack Sennett. At Sennett's studio, he helped develop the screen character of comedian Harry Langdon. He also helped Langdon when Langdon went on to feature films. Capra directed such Langdon films as Tramp, Tramp, Tramp (1926), which he also wrote, The Strong Man (1926), and Long Pants (1927). The childlike, lucky simpleton played by Langdon in those films became a great sensation, such a great sensation that Langdon got rid of Capra in an egoistic fit and attempted to make his own films. However, though a good performer, Langdon was not a good filmmaker and enjoyed a marvelous, brief career as a film star. Capra went on to Columbia Pictures in 1928 and helped the studio turn itself around from a cheap, run-down operation into a major player in Hollywood. Capra directed a series of average but successful films at Columbia, learning his craft and coming up with a few technical innovations of his own before he achieved an incredible success with perhaps the first masterpiece in screwball comedies, It Happened One Night (1934). The film became the first ever to make a clean sweep of all of the major categories at the Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Actor for Clark Gable, Best Actress for Claudette Colbert, and Best Director for Capra. During the dark decade of the 1930s, Frank Capra became America's preeminent filmmaker, leavening Depression-era despair with the laughter of his irrepressible optimism. Packaging hope for the hopeless, his "fantasies of goodwill" were as important to national morale as FDR's "fireside chats" and well-deserving of the three Best Director Oscars they brought him. Twenty years later when the CAHIERS DU CINEMA critics launched an auteurist reassessment of American films, his reputation suffered, despite the unarguable fact that his "name above the title" signified his absolute artistic control of the project, a rarity in the studio-dominated Hollywood culture of his heyday.

    Monday, Jan. 07, 2002
On a cold night just after New Year's, I watched one of Frank Capra's moviesnot a bad way to keep warm, if you choose the right Capra. I wanted to tune in on an old American wavelength. A Capra resonance, an atmosphere, seemed to have returned off and on during the fall. It suggested some earlier American self-image, a kind of innocence arising from vulnerability and loss: post-traumatic sweetness. (The trauma in Capra's case, of course, was the stock-market crash and the Great Depression.) Had we renewed our citizenship, for a little while, in Frank Capra's America? Capra's movies are the garden from which Americans were expelled, years ago, by their success and power and diversityand by their bitter internal wars over, among others, Joe McCarthy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Ho Chi Minh. The films archive the country's grainy common-man myth of itself, more generous and neighborly and decent, and a lot whiter (in a Norman Rockwell way) than America has proved to be, decades later, having made all that money and opened its doors to the world. That night I did not want to see one of Capra's heavily political films (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington or Meet John Doe, for example), all chicken fat and diatribe, in which endearing little people go up against incipient corporate fascism. I wanted the pure, innocent allegory of It Happened One Night, which won five Oscars in 1934.

Frank Capra: The Bitter Tea of General Yen

    No 100
    Derek Malcolm
    Thursday January 18, 2001

"Buddha, Joan of Arc and the spirit of all who believe in God live in the White House," Spencer Tracy was made to say in State of the Union, a dreadful film made by Frank Capra in 1948. It was the logical conclusion to the Sicilian immigrant's admiration for America, which admittedly produced much better movies, such as It Happened One Night and Mr Deeds Goes to Town. But even these affectionately remembered films look naive and sentimental now, despite the evident skill of their making. The former won Capra the Oscars he craved. He called them "my holy grail". Shrewd and talented as he was, Capra's espousal of the virtues of the little man reek of whimsy and wishful thinking and, though we were once taken in by their sheer entertainment value, they remain among American cinema's most cosily absurd fables. Not long after he made State of the Union, this somewhat unpleasing man was convinced that the America he once loved, and who had once loved his work, had been taken over by gays, druggies and draft dodgers. Unfortunately, he funked making a movie about that.

Contrary to the trend in Hollywood that favors the big city over the small town, or represents the small town as a violent, saloon-lined street in the Western genre, director Frank Capra glorified small-town America and attacked the vices of the big city in his classic films American Madness (1932), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Meet John Doe (1941), and It's a Wonderful Life (1946).
