All-Time Allstars - Harry Caray By Matt Phillips
A warm and sleepy Sunday afternoon, Wrigley Field. Heading into the 7th inning stretch, the Cubs trail by a couple of runs. Suddenly, and despite the current score line, Wrigley bursts into life.
The focus is on the broadcast booth and the man who stands at the window. His voice suddenly comes over the PA. "Okay, let me hear ya!" The man leads the whole crowd, young and old alike into a rendition of the old baseball standard, "Take Me Out To The Ballgame."
As the song closes, the crowd erupts again. Anyone would have thought Slammin' Sammy had just hit a game winning homer. The man in the booth has some advice for the Cubs: "Now get some runs!"
The man on the mic is Harry Caray, one of the greatest play-by-play announcers in sporting history, king of the seventh inning stretch sing-a-long and as much a part of Cubs folklore as Wrigley Field and the ivy that hangs on the outfield wall.

harry caray Dies at 83. harry caray, whose zesty, raucous caray was bornharry Christopher Carabina in St. Louis. His father left the family
http://www.great-music.net/harry2.htm
Harry Caray Dies at 83 Harr y Caray, whose zesty, raucous style of baseball play-by-play electrified airwaves and roused fans for more than half a century, died Wednesday at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 83. Caray, who lived in Palm Springs, Calif., during the baseball off seasons, had been in a coma since he collapsed at a restaurant Saturday night while having dinner with his wife, Dutchie. Doctors said that his heart had suddenly changed rhythm, restricting oxygen to his brain. He suffered a stroke in 1987.
He died of cardiac arrest with resulting brain damage, Bill Wills, a family spokesman, said. Caray cut a humorous, opinionated and sometimes controversial figure, whether his loud and pungent voice was calling (and rooting for) the St. Louis Cardinals, the Oakland A's, the Chicago White Sox or the Chicago Cubs. A short man with oversized glasses, Caray punctuated home-team home runs by shouting: "It might be! It could be! It is!" He made "Holy cow!" his on-air trademark of astonishment long before Phil Rizzuto adopted it. And after a victory for the Cubs, who were perennial losers during his tenure at Wrigley Field, he roared in delight: "Cubs win! Cubs win! Cubs win!" In later years, as his craft occasionally turned to self-parody, he became best known for his off-key warbling of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," during the seventh-inning stretch of White Sox, then Cubs games. He had been singing the old ditty in broadcast booths for years until the former White Sox owner Bill Veeck secretly amplified it for all of Comiskey Parkto hear.

Harry Caray broadcast over 8,000 regular season games. His first game was on opening day in 1945. Harry packed 883 years of living into and 83-year life and lived by a simple credo: "The meter is running so you'd better live it up."

Harry Caray and the Summer of '84
Arizona Daily Wildcat Tom Collins
In the summer of 1984, the Cubs were going to win a World Series and no one could stop them. No one really wanted to stop them, not even the Sox fans. It was a bright, dusty, Dairy Queen summer in Chicago's south suburbs, all dirt bikes and Ghost in the Graveyard. It was Matteson-Olympia Fields Little League baseball season and I was playing third base for the Athletics, but away from the fields I was never without my mesh-backed, McDonald's-meal Cubs cap. Afternoons were hot. My friend Jeff and I sought shade after home run derby and TV to waste the day. There were always Cub games. There was always Harry Caray. In 1984, the Cubs had destiny written all over their uniforms. They were refugees from other dynasties, washed up Phillies and Dodgers. It was a team of Rick Sutcliffes and Ron Ceys, Gary Mathews and Bobby Derniers. It was a team with a new Ernie Banks, a National League's Cal Ripken, Jr.- Ryne Sandberg. Man, he was everybody's All-American, a guy who spoke with his bat and his glove. Like this kid Bucky on my little league team, who just played hard and never talked. Best second baseman in the league. Jeff and I loved Ryne and so did Harry. Harry was a bigger fan. Harry was the biggest fan. He knew that this was it.

HOLY COW CUBS WIN An Ode to Harry
    Wrigley Field is empty,
    The bleachers are bare,
    And the weather is cold.
    Yet still,
    Sometimes, when the wind blows
    Out to right field,
    You can still hear it.
    The voice of a legend,
An old man who still has the excitement
of a child going to his first ball game, The whispers of "Cubs win...cubs win..." But Wrigley is empty. Never before, And never again will we see someone With such enthusiasm, With such a love for the game. Anyone who has ever heard him, Heard him say "Holy cow!" Or heard him sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" Or "It might be...it could be..it is!" Anyone who has heard him will never forget. He wasn't the voice of a generation of fans, He was the voice of every generation of fans since 1945 And we love him.

Deep Thoughts from the legendary Chicago Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray Hey! Let me ask you a question and be honest. It's a simple yes or no question. If your arm was a hot dog, would you eat it Man I know I would....I'd be delicious. I would be covered in hot mustard and relish, man I'd be good! It's a simple yes or no question. Just answer the question and post it on the message board. Harry: If you had a choice between a million dollars and mad cow disease, which one would you choose? Man what a tough decision. Chris: Uhhhhhh I think I'd choose a million dollars. Harry: Holy Cow! I thought you were gonna say mad cow disease... You know Chris, another thing that I don't understand is these Cuban baseball players. They grow up in a climate where the sun shines a total of 364 days a year. And yet I see them out in the outfield, and they lose the ball in the sun. I just don't understand these guys. It's classic, I tell ya, it's classic. I wonder if they would eat their arm if it was a hot dog? Man, I know I would. It's a simple yes or no.... Voice of Harry Caray done by Jared Mosher.
