The original Carter Family, consisting of folklorist A.P. Carter, his wife Sara and her cousin, Maybelle, was not only one of the most influential groups in country music history, they were also one of the most wonderful to listen to. They worked together, off and on, from 1927 to 1943, and various revival versions of the group were formed in the 1950s and '60s. Over the years, the Carter Family recorded dozens of songs which are now country and bluegrass standards, and Maybelle Carter is often credited as one of the most influential acoustic guitarists in country history her then-unique style is one of the models that modern flatpicking was built on. Although the Carter Family had been performing together much earlier, they were "discovered" by Victor Records talent scout Ralph Peer in 1927, when he set up a makeshift recording studio in the border town of Bristol, Tennessee, and recorded as much of the local talent as he was able. Along with the Carter Family, these sessions also captured the young blues yodeler, Jimmie Rodgers, at the start of his career. Both Rodgers and the Carter Family were instant successes, and became the dominant commerical country artists of the Depression Era. The Carters recorded for Victor until 1935, switching first to ARC Records, then to Decca. In 1936 they took a job broadcasting on Texas radio station, XERA, where they stayed for several years, and their popularity exploded with the tremendous national and regional exposure given by the border station's powerful signal, as well as the numerous syndicated "transcription discs" which were shipped to stations nationwide.

Birthplace of Country Music
A Local Legacy

Where was country music born? If you said Nashville, you'd be wrong. The right answer is Bristol, Tennessee. Bristol is on the Tennessee and Virginia border, where Appalachian mountain folk music has been popular for generations. Many of the fiddle tunes and song styles came over from the British Isles in the 1700s. By the early 1900s, the recording industry had begun, but most musicians had to travel to New York City to record their music. In 1927, Ralph Peer of Victor Records decided to try something different. He went to Bristol, Tennessee, to record local musicians. He thought that old-time and "hillbilly" musicians could be found there. Two local acts signed recording contracts the Carter Family from Virginia and former railroad worker Jimmie Rodgers of North Carolina. While the Carter Family played old-time mountain music, Jimmie Rodgers sang ballads and used a singing style called yodeling. They both became successful nationwide. The Carter Family formed the core of several generations of popular country musicians, and Rodgers's 1928 recording of "Blue Yodel" became one of the first country records to sell a million copies! These early Bristol recordings laid the groundwork for much of the country music that followed. Because Bristol is not usually thought of as the place where country music began, it was especially important that the U.S. Congress recognized Bristol's contribution to music history. In 1998, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Bristol as the "Birthplace of County Music."

Hillbillies on the Radio "Old-time" or "hillbilly" music would not have been popularized without the attention of record companies and the radio. At the time, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) which controlled the music publishing houses and the live music industry, respectively, barred rural, blues, and jazz musicians from membership, effectively keeping them from performing or publishing their works professionally. Consequently most old-time performers were semi-professionals who combined performing at barn-dances, medicine shows, music contests, political rallies, etc. with whatever sort of work they could find. The Carter Family out of Columbia Records' "Familiar Tunes- Old and New" catalogue about half the old-time records released were traditional songs, but the number of original compositions doubled from 12% to 24%. Carson, especially, was used to learning a few songs and could not adjust to new material quickly. Carson and the others were being replaced by the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, and Vernon Dalhart, a classically trained singer who recorded crooner pop hits, "Negro dialect" songs, and old-time songs. These new performers were able to write new material that sounded traditional and were able to quickly pick up new songs and initialize them. Uncle Jimmy Thompson on WSM

Thursday May 17th, 2001 Mother Maybelle's L-5 moves into a 'mansion' Led by Othar Turner's Fife and Drum Band this morning, a limousine procession of Country Music Hall of Fame members carried the last artifact to go into the new Country Music Hall of Fame museum Mother Maybelle Carter 's Gibson L-5 guitar . They traveled only ten blocks from the original Music Row location to the grand new facility at 5th Avenue South and Demonbreun Street in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. In ceremonies at the new museum, country star and master instrumentalist Marty Stuart held Mother Maybelle's Gibson aloft and said, "This guitar is the heart of country music. Inside this guitar lives country music." Stuart, playing Mother Maybelle's Gibson, then ended the inaugural ceremonies with a song first recorded and popularized by the Carter Family, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." The history of that guitar and country music began on another short trip July 31, 1927. A.P. "Doc" Carter drove his model A Ford loaded with his wife Sara, his sister-in-law Maybelle (who was seven months pregnant at the time), and Sara's two children and various musical instruments 30 miles from mountainous Maces Spring, Virginia, to Bristol, Tennessee. They were to record for Victor talent scout Ralph Peer, who was conducting a 10-day session in a leased store front on State Street. The Carter session had been pre-arranged between A.P. and Peer through the assistance of the local Victrola merchant. The Carter Family cut six sides on August 1-2, including "The Storms are on the Ocean" and "Single Girl, Married Girl", an event often marked as the beginning of country music as a popular, commercial musical style.

The Original Carter Family , Alvin Pleasant Carter, his wife Sara, and her cousin Maybelle, were a major influence in the development of American country music. Through hundereds of recordings, personal appearances, and radio programs carried on dozens of stations, they reached devoted fans across the country and the world. Their music, a composite of traditional ballads, blues songs, gospel numbers, heart songs, and instrumentals shaped and reflected the tastes of the rural south. Sara's supurb alto voice, combined with A.P.'s song writing and collecting, were enhanced by Maybelle's innovative and formative guitar lead style. The song texts here are intended for study and comparison to later country and bluegrass versions.

Ideas
We are especially interested in early forms of commercial American country music the transition from what most people would call "folk music" from the back porch to the vaudeville stage, radio, and phonograph records. We believe that the growth of technology has played a big part in influencing this movement. Microphones, for example, enabled singers to develop a so-called "crooning" style and still be heard when singing with bands. We'll be adding thoughts to this page as time allows, but would also like to request input from any readers here with the thought of sharing some of these ideas, just for the fun of it. Click here to send comments. In the meantime, here's a little bit of background material to work with.
