Music Lost Out To Nashville

The roots are deep and strong. Country music's first stars Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family both recorded in Bristol as early as 1927. So how come Bristol isn't Nashville? STORY AND COLOR PHOTOS BY JOE TENNIS The Carter Family, circa late 1920s. From left, Maybelle, A.P. and Sara Carter. Their songs and tight harmonies gave birth to a genre.
"In no section of the south have the pre-war melodies and old mountaineer songs been better preserved than in the mountains of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, experts declare, and it was primarily for this reason that the Victrola company chose Bristol as its operating base." Bristol Herald Courier, July 24, 1927. Ralph Peer, a record producer from New York City and a pioneer of recording black folk and blues singers, arrived in Bristol, Va., in 1927 with a goal to advance the fledging "hillbilly" records scene initiated just a few months earlier when the the Victor Talking Machine Co. released a single by Delaney, Ark., fiddle player Eck Robertson.

Country Music and Musicians
American country music, also known as country-western or hillbilly music, is rooted in the folk songs of immigrants from Great Britain. It has connections to other ethnic music found in America as well. Country music uses simple melodies and lyrics that express everyday emotions such as loneliness, love, and grief. It began with small groups of country musicians singing and playing songs of love, hard times, and social problems. The instruments used to play or accompany the tunes were the fiddle, the banjo, and the guitar.
In the early 1920s, record companies traveled across the rural areas of the United States in search of music from a variety of cultural groups. They discovered "hillbilly" music in the rural south and recorded local musicians. In August of 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee, some important pioneers of country music, Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family, signed contracts to record for Victor Records.
A. P. Carter, his wife, Sara, and her sister Maybelle, set the standard for many country groups that followed. All three sang while Sara and Maybelle played the guitar and occasionally the Autoharp. Over the years, other members of the Carter family joined the group. The Carters' repertoire included traditional songs as well as songs composed by A. P. Carter in the traditional style. They performed and recorded until 1943.
Jimmie Rodgers is considered by many to be the "father" of modern country music. Although he died just six years after recording his first song, his performance style influenced many country performers who followed. Rodgers incorporated a variety of popular styles of the period into his music, including the blues. Rodgers was one of the first artists elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame, in 1961.

'Country Royalty' George Jones, June Carter Cash to grace Paramount By Patrick MacDonald
Seattle Times music critic E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive George Jones comes to town with a sparkling new jewel in his country-royalty crown. Earlier this month, the formerly troublesome, unreliable honky-tonker, who has cleaned up his act considerably in recent years, was presented the National Medal of Arts by President Bush and his wife, Laura, in a ceremony in the Oval Office. Jones was the only country-music star among the nine recipients of the nation's highest honor for artistic excellence. It's a highfalutin award for a down-to-earth performer, known for songs about drinking, gambling, partying and fooling around. He probably was honored as much for surviving this long (he's 72) as for his enduring country classics like "He Stopped Loving Her Today," "The Race Is On" and "Why, Baby, Why." No longer No-Show Jones, he not only shows up for his concerts these days but also plays long shows filled with his hits. Considered one of the finest country singers, his voice is better than ever since he stopped drinking and smoking. Concert Preview

News Release From U.S. Representatives

February 12, 1998 [Washington, DC] — U.S. Representatives Bill Jenkins (R-TN) and Rick Boucher (D-VA) have introduced legislation designating the Cities of Bristol, Tennessee and Virginia as the official "Birthplace of Country Music." The General Assembly of Virginia and the Tennessee State Senate have previously made this designation. Announced to local officials last Friday at a meeting of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, the legislation was formally introduced by the two lawmakers on Wednesday. Jenkins and Boucher were asked last spring to introduce the legislation on behalf of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce and the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance (BCMA), a group dedicated to obtaining recognition for Bristol's contribution to modern country music. "From its innocuous beginnings in the hills and mountains of Appalachia, country music has steadily grown to become the most popular form of music in the nation, and the Bristol sessions of 1927 were a critical part of that success. I am pleased to recognize Bristol's contributions to country music and am hopeful our resolution will be passed quickly by the House and Senate," Jenkins said. The resolution offers several factors supporting the designation:
  • the Cities of Bristol have long been a gathering place for musicians from the nearby mountainous countryside;
