by Mark Zwonitzer with Charles Hirshberg " Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? is a long-overdue book about the most important family in American musical history. The Carter Family are our collective link to the past, not simply to the southern past, either, but to the enormous, antithetically mixed culture that would finally produce the most creative and interesting nation on earth. In some ways this is a sad book, but it's an indispensable one for the person who wants to learn about the origins of American music. I don't think anyone who reads this book will forget its portrayal of the mist-shrouded southern mountains and of the travail and spiritual strength that was characteristic of its people."

Can The Circle Be Unbroken
(Columbia/Legacy)

Without The Carter Family, it's impossible to imagine the course of country music. As if spreading the Anglo/Appalachian folk tradition that had been developing since the colonial era weren't enough, the group also popularized the guitar style that would become synonymous with country. But, like musical pioneers from Charley Patton through the Fugs, The Carter Family remains more often read about than heard. As usual, that's an oversight worth correcting, and Can The Circle Be Unbroken , a new collection of Carter recordings, should help. Made up of husband and wife A.P. and Sara Carter and sister-in-law Maybelle, The Carter Family began its recording career after being discovered in the same 1927 talent call that turned up Jimmie Rodgers. The group sought out and recorded a wide variety of material floating around rural America, but its acts of preservation wouldn't have mattered nearly as much had the Carters not found a way to connect with their audience through timeless material, remarkable performances, and evocative singing. In addition to their justly famous harmonizing, the Carters found in Sara a remarkable singer whose low, flat, unadorned vocals make no distinction separating the sacred, comic, and romantic, allowing listeners to fill in the emotional gaps themselves. Drawn almost entirely from a handful of 1935 sessions, Circle Stardust ), but he also took one of rock's most dubious phenomena—the concept album—and created an unforgettable song cycle of romantic dissolution, pain, and redemption set in the closing days of the West. Now reissued with bonus tracks as part of Columbia's "American Milestones" series (alongside the Carter collection, an expanded version of J

Sara Carter, vocal and autoharp; Maybelle Carter, guitar. Most of the lead vocals were done by Sara. Maybelle played guitar and autoharp. During their career the "Original Carter Family" recorded over three hundred songs. Some of their songs are still frequently performed. Songs like "Wildwood Flower", "Jimmie Brown the Newsboy" and "Keep on the Sunnyside" among others have developed a life of their own. Unlike most of the rest of the artists on the Anthology, the Carters sales history was so strong that they continued to record throughout the Depression and thereafter. The group went to the Texas-Mexico border in 1938 and started broadcasting on the radio stations XERA, XEG, and XENT. The "X" stations were located across the border in Mexico and thereby were able to get around FCC limitations on the strength of their signal. These stations could be picked up -all over the south thereby disseminating the performer's music wide and far. These shows also marked the return of the "medicine show" to the airwaves alternating music and comedy with sales pitches for patent medicines and dubious medical procedures. The original group stopped performing as a group in the early 1940s. Maybelle Carter played guitar in a distinct style, picking out the melody on the bass strings. It is a style that she learned from an African-American neighbor Leslie Riddle. Her style influenced many of the folk guitarists that followed and is a style strongly identified with the folk revival. Maybelle continued to be a popular country music artist until her death performing as "Mother Maybelle". She and Sara made appearances at various folk festivals during the 1960s including Newport and the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife.

The Carter Family was discovered in 1927 by Victor Recording Studio in Bristol and recorded 300 songs between 1927 and 1942. Playing traditional Appalachian music, the family has often been credited as forerunners of modern-day country music. Today, the old home acts as a museum and A.P. Carter's old general store acts as "the fold" where music performances are held weekly. A.P.'s youngest daughter Jannette acts as mistress of ceremony. Janette performs weekly.

Obituary: Helen Carter, 70, Performer in Family's Country Band By BEN RATLIFF H elen Carter, a singer and musician who was part of the Carter family dynasty of country-music
entertainers, died on Tuesday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. She
was 70 and lived in Dickson, Tenn. She had been hospitalized for gastrointestinal problems that began over a year ago, said Kelly
Hancock of House of Cash, the business office of Johnny Cash, Carter's brother-in-law, and of her
sister June Carter Cash. The original Carter Family band, which helped kick-start the country-music record industry in 1927,
was begun by A.P. Carter, a railroad worker and farmer from Maces Springs, Va.; his wife, Sara,
and Sara's cousin, Maybelle. The band grew with the occasional addition of Maybelle's children, including Helen. The family band lasted from 1927 to 1943, and it was of inestimable importance to American music.
