His achievements were notable, but in an era of rising energy costs, mounting inflation, and continuing tensions, it was impossible for his administration to meet these high expectations. Carter, who has rarely used his full nameJames Earl Carter, Jr.was born October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. Peanut farming, talk of politics, and devotion to the Baptist faith were mainstays of his upbringing. Upon graduation in 1946 from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, Carter married Rosalynn Smith. The Carters have three sons, John William (Jack), James Earl III (Chip), Donnel Jeffrey (Jeff), and a daughter, Amy Lynn. After seven years' service as a naval officer, Carter returned to Plains. In 1962 he entered state politics, and eight years later he was elected Governor of Georgia. We may wonder at his ability to travel from a log cabin to the White House. His story has helped form the American dreamthat a person coming from a modest background can attain spectacular success. James Earl (Jimmy) Carter, Jr., achieved that dream. His roots were in the southwestern part of Georgia, where members of his family had struggled to make a living for 150 years. He was the first Carter to finish high school. From such beginnings he went on to become PRESIDENT of the United States. Early Years Carter was born in the little town of Plains, Georgia (population about 650), on October 1, 1924. He was the first child of James Earl Carter and Lillian Gordy Carter. Later two daughters, Gloria and Ruth, and another son, William, were born to the Carters. The elder Carter was the manager of a grocery store. In time he was able to acquire some farmland of his own in Archery, just outside Plains. When Jimmy was not going to school, he was working on the farm. He sold peanuts as a sideline and saved the money he earned. Of his childhood, Carter later said: "In general, the early years of my life on the farm were full and enjoyable, isolated but not lonely. We always had enough to eat ... but no money to waste."

Now, by saying that, I don't mean to assert that Jimmy Carter is perfect, or that he is a total stranger to base motives, or that he is one of the elite of God's electthough for all I know that third item, at least, may well be true. Nor am I referring strictly to Mr. Carter's post-presidential career. It is now the conventional wisdom to say that Mr. Carter is a far better ex-President than he was a President. And in this instance the conventional wisdom has got it right. No historian would place Carter among the three or four greatest presidents of our history, and not even his most fervent admirers would place him in the top ten. But as an ex-President, he has only a tiny handful of rivals..... Carter put his post-presidential ambitions this way in the opening sentence of his farewell address from the Oval Office . He said (and I should note that while I may have typed this line, Mr. Carter, by virtue of his character, was its true author), "In a few days I will lay down my official duties in this office, to take up once more the only title in our democracy superior to that of President, the title of citizen." Dr. Julius Richmond, under whose supervision the 15th anniversary edition of the surgeon general's report on smoking was produced in 1979, took the stand in the first class-action lawsuit by smokers ever to go to trial. The nation's five biggest cigarette companies and three industry trade groups are being sued for $200 billion in a class-action brought on behalf of 500,000 sick Florida smokers. Though tobacco companies pledged in a 1954 advertisement that ran in national publications that they would cooperate "with those who work to safeguard the public health," Richmond said his experience was the opposite. "They were constantly publicly attacking what we were doing and particularly that (1979) report," said Richmond, professor emeritus at Harvard University and a board-certified pediatrician.

After joining the Marine from 1946 until 1953, he returned to his family and continued helping out on the farm. After being a member for some time of the Democratic Party he was chosen Senate of Georgia in 1962. Nine years later he became gouvernor for a period of four years (1971-1974). Up to then he was not really well-known, but when he wanted to run for President in 1976, he organized a brilliant campaign to let the Americans know who he was. His opponent was Gerald Ford . Ford was a very unfortunate President who had to clean up the Watergate-mess which Richard Nixon had left behind. After Ford's administration the American people still did not feel secure and because Carter emphasized the moral aspects of politics and because he was very confident and enthusiastic, it was no surprise the American people chose him in 1976. The American economy was in a deep recession when Carter was inaugurated in January 1977 and on May 22nd of the same year Carter held his so-called Malaise-speech. In fact he was just showing the Americans where they stood in the world and at that moment they were not to be envied. Carter complained of "a crisis of confidence" which had struck "at the very heart and soul of our national will." The Americans did not like this kind of representation of their country but this was only the beginnning. April 8, 1998 Web posted at: 5:01 a.m. EDT (0901 GMT) From CNN Military Affairs Correspondent Jamie McIntyre WASHINGTON (CNN) CNN has learned the U.S. Navy will name the third and final submarine of the Seawolf class the "USS Jimmy Carter", after the 39th President of the United States. Pentagon sources tell CNN the decision to name the submarine for Carter will be announced by Navy Secretary John Dalton at the Pentagon Wednesday. Carter was a 1946 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and served as an officer aboard some of the first nuclear submarines. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, and was the only president to qualify as a submariner. Carter served one term as President and Commander-in-Chief of the military from 1977 to 1981. The Seawolf class of submarines is the newest, fastest submarine in the U.S. fleet. The Navy originally planned to build 32 of the attack subs, but reduced the total to three after the end of the Cold War. The Navy is now building a new, cheaper attack submarine.
