The Gene Cernan Alan Bean booksigning held a few months before, this was a PRIVATE booksigning, not open to the public, just for our NOVAGRAPHICS customers. Most of the 300 or so in attendance were from outside Tucson, indeed from out-of-state. Mr. Cernan asked everyone who came up to have a book signed where they were from, (to start the conversation), and was continually astonished at the answers. Many came from Florida or the East Coast. We encouraged Mr. Cernan to give a brief talk both days, as we had heard at other signings that he was a magnificent and powerful public speaker. He seemed at ease with the crowds, fielding questions, and explaining his motivations behind writing the book Last Man on the Moon. Customer and sculptor Ron Shinkle drove to Tucson from the Ft. Worth area, bringing along a HUGE 1/44 scale Saturn V which stood 8 feet tall, which was placed to the right of Cernan as he signed books. and also a Gemini-Titan rocket to the same scale, which we set on the booksigning table next to Gene. Gene was amazed at the difference in size when you see them to scale together, and continually referred to it in his talks.

Eugene "Gene" Cernan has some experiences he wants to share with the public. One is what it felt like to be spacewalking outside the Gemini 9 spacecraft "with my visor fogged up and my suit sticking to me like plaster of Paris." Another is the strain that being an astronaut could put on a marriage. Cernan's book The Last Man on the Moon (St. Martin's Press) is "very first-person," he says in an interview with space.com. Rather than focus on technology, he sought to explain what it felt like to be a member of the space program in the 1960s and 70s. That includes the dark side of such a lifethe loneliness and worries of the astronauts' wives, for instance.

The book, published in April 1999, was co-authored with journalist Don Davis over a period of two and a half years. In seeking a collaborator, Cernan says, "I needed someone willing to not just delve into my mind but to dive into my heart and soul." Cernan went into space three times. He served as commander of Apollo 17, the final manned moon mission, and participated in the Gemini 9 and Apollo 10 missions.

The Forgotten Last Man on the Moon
Everyone knows that Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon . Most people, however, cannot remember who the last man on the moon was - it was Gene Cernan. It appears that almost all recollection of Cernan has been erased from the collective American memory. For instance, most Americans can remember the infamous "One Small Step ..." comment that Neil Armstrong made when he stepped onto the moon, but who can remember what Cernan said as man left the moon for the last time "...as we leave the Moon at Taurus Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17." As a favor to Gene, I have listed some snippets about him:
  • Both Armstrong and Cernan have something in common besides being astronauts - both graduated from the same school - Purdue University . Purdue can therefore lay claim to the fact that both the first man and the last man on the moon graduated from Purdue. Other famous graduates from Purdue include Orville Redenbacher and

Cernan was traveling in a military helicopter that crashed Sunday afternoon during an emergency landing near Milevsko, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Prague, said Milan Repka, a spokesman for the Defense Ministry. No one was killed in the accident, Repka said, Cernan was traveling aboard the helicopter with Vladimir Remek, the eastern European country's only cosmonaut. The helicopter had been traveling to Bernatice, 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Prague, the hometown of Cernan's grandfather. More Stories

``There were some injuries among the crew, but it is my understanding that Mr. Cernan and Mr. Remek escaped uninjured,'' Repka said. Czech state radio reported two crew members were hospitalized with serious injuries. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident, Repka said. Cernan, born in Broadview, Illinois, was a Navy attack pilot who became an astronaut in 1963. He flew on the Gemini 9, Apollo 10 and Apollo 17 missions. He was the second American to walk in space and the last to walk on the moon
