The Man of a Thousand Faces
W hen we think of the silent film era, we think of actors like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, or Clara Bow, stars who created trademark personas and spent their entire careers testing the limits of those characters. They perfected what they had created, but rarely attempted other roles. For many in the industry, both then and now, this type of career is considered the pinnacle of success, but for one actor it was the antithesis of the his art. For Lon Chaney, the art of acting was the art of continual transformation, and it came from a desire to become someone else, to leave his own skin and enter another's.
Born on April 1, 1883, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Leonidas Chaney was one of four children born to deaf parents (his maternal grandparents founded Colorado's first deaf school in 1874). As a result, Chaney learned how to communicate with his hands and face while growing up, expressing a variety of emotions without ever uttering a single word. At an early age, he was familiar with what it was like to be an outsider, to be at once a part of the everyday world and simultaneously distanced from it. This, more than anything, informed his choice of roles and provided him with the sensitivity to perform each of them extraordinarily well.
By 1923, Chaney was known a "The Man of a Thousand Faces" for his ability to transform himself into any type of character. His roles ranged from pirate, to Chinese shipwreck survivor, to tough Marines sergeant, to Russian peasant during the Russian revolution, to Mandarin, to circus clown, to crusty railroad engineer, to Fagin in "Oliver Twist" (1922). His gift for playing a vast array of characters even made him the subject of a popular joke at the time: "Don't step on that spider! It might be Lon Chaney!"

About the Site...
A solitary cabin stands alongside the trail which runs up the north fork of Big Pine Creek in the John Muir WIlderness. Its rustic Architecture with a gable roof, over-hanging beams, and granite fieldstone exterior do not hint that it was once the place Quasimodo, the Phantom of the Opera, and other famous monsters came to relax, hunt, and fish in the High Sierra. That is, this was the summer home of one of Hollywood's most famous character actors, Lon Chaney, Sr. The cabin is also significant for its association with Paul Revere Williams, the first African American granted a fellowship in the American Institute of Architects (A. I. A.). Williams was internationally renowned for his architectural designs, including the Saks Fifth Avenue building in Beverley Hills, for which he won the A. I. A. Award for Excellence. He was also won seven national and regional competitions for his special area of expertiseindividual homes. Many of the 2,000 homes he planned were for other film celebrities, but Lon Chaney's Cabin is the only mountain cabin Williams designed throughout his distinguished career. The cabin was so much a part of Chaney's life that when Universal Studios filmed his biography, "Man of a Thousand Faces," staring James Cagney, they used his sumer home for a portion of it. After Chaney's death in 1932, the cabin was sold and later became property of the U.S. Forest Service.

Unidentified Lon Chaney Stills
This is a collection of stills that I have not positively identified yet. For several of these I have narrowed them down a bit, but cannot be certain of the film. To give better resolution, these are included as large image files (around 75-100KB each). Click on the link to see the enlarged image. If you think you have figured one out, send me an e-mail at ChaneyFan@aol.com and I will post your name at this site and proclaim you as one of the holy ones. Unidentified #3 1914; with Murdoch MacQuarrie(?) and Pauline Bush. Possibly The Lie (1914, Universal/Gold Seal) , although I don't really think so. Unidentified #5 1914; obviously a western setting, and Chaney looks sympathetic, so this could be The Old Cobbler (1914, Universal/101 Bison) Unidentified #6 c1914-15; I'm pretty sure this is William C. Dowlan and Pauline Bush. Possibly All for Peggy (1915, Universal/Rex) or Star of the Sea (1915, Universal/Rex) Unidentified #10 c1914; Possibly Red Margaret, Moonshiner (1913, Universal/Gold Seal) or The End of the Feud (1914, Universal/Rex)

LON CHANEY
Biography
My great-grandfather, Lon Chaney was born on April 1, 1883 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was the son of deaf mute parents, Frank and Emma Chaney and he learned from childhood to communicate through pantomime, sign language and facial expression. His mother became bed ridden from rheumatism when Lon was very young, so he quit school about the age of ten to care for her and his younger siblings.
To keep the family entertained, Lon would venture into town and observe people. He would also go to his father's place of employment for 25 years, "Phil Strubels Barber Shop" where Frank Chaney (also known as Dummy Chaney or the Millionaires barber) would shave and cut hair for the town's patrons.
When at home, Lon would reenact skits via sign language and pantomime silently mimicking the towns citizens and events for his family. Unknowingly, he was starting a career in entertaining people which would span nearly four decades and eventually lead him to be the worlds most popular box office attraction. Lon Chaney circa 1911 As a young man, he worked as a guide taking tourists to Pikes Peak where he developed his love for the outdoor life. He also learned the wallpaper, drapery, and carpet trades. Lon was eventually hired by his older brother John, as a property boy, scene painter, and stagehand at Colorado Springs Opera House. He witnessed many of the great actors of the time, passing thru on tour, and developing his own passion for the theater. At 19, he went on the road as an actor in a play that he also co-wrote with his brother titled "The Little Tycoon". After limited success, the company was sold and Lon continued on with the new owner.

Silent Film Sources - Reviews
Lon Chaney By Christopher Clotworthy W e know Lon Chaney as silent film's most peculiarly fascinating star. He and the silents were made for each other. His formidable skills in pantomime were the result of communicating with deaf parents. Chaney started out singing and dancing in touring musical shows but in film made his mark with barnstorming melodrama. Chaney had a genius for makeup which he refined as a journeyman actor at Universal City from 1913 to 1918. He performed there in over one hundred character roles, frequently played villains. He received star billing for the first time after his triumph in The Miracle Man (1919) where he played a con-artist who poses as a victim of paralysis. Chaney favored highly theatrical make-ups and bizarre characterizations. He put on long noses and false beards, portraying warped souls in a vivid game of make-believe. He was especially riveting as physically disabled and deformed characters. It isn't clear whether he took this odd artistic route because of his love for theatrical makeup, because he had a special understanding of the weirder aspects of 1920's popular taste or because it allowed him to express something quite personal (his wife, Hazel had earlier been married to a legless man). He may have portrayed grotesques simply to stand out in the crowd. Chaney was a popular and respected character lead by 1922 when first billed as The Man of A Thousand Faces. His roles as

ReSearch Publications in SF specializes in cultural demi-mondes, everything from Burroughs and J. G. Ballard to "incredibly strange music," pranks, and "angry women." One of their most notorious recent publications is Bob Flanagan: Supermasochist! The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is Flanagan's spiritual father. This cinematic supermasochist had a mentor (as all masochists must): director Tod Browning, an equally "deviant" artiste who not only helped create Chaney's persona but made his own immortal contributions to the backwaters of culture with the original Dracula and the banned carnival classic Freaks Chaney, like Flanagan, became an artist through direct early contact with infirmity: his mother was sickly, but more significantly, both parents were deaf, causing young Chaney to develop a repertoire of facial and body tics and gestures to communicate with them. He made his first films in the mid-1910s, and by 1920 he was already creating roles that required him to be armless, legless, crippled, or otherwise deformed. In The Penalty
