Chaplin, Charlie, and Fascism
It is perhaps not surprising, states historian Charles Maland, that Chaplin should have chosen to make a film 1940's The Great Dictator in which his icon appeared as a rebellious Jewish ghetto resident under the regime of Adenoid Hynkel (Hitler). Maland points out how Charles and Adolf were born not far apart in time, but more importantly he also notes how the two bore some resemblance as adults. The two shared not merely the famous mustache which suggested the tack Chaplin's parody could take, but also their demand for "strict control over their subordinates when, as adults, they achieved positions of power." (Maland 1983: 164) In 1936, the New York Times referred to Chaplin as "parsimonious, contradictory, egotistic, difficult even unreasonable to work with," and Dan James said that Chaplin "had in himself some of the qualities that Hitler had. He dominated his world. He created his world. And Chaplin's world was not a democracy either . . ." (Robinson 1985: 493). Chaplin the artist was, remarkably close to how artists are stereotypically portrayed, obsessive in a frequently negative light. And both Chaplin and Hitler had gone through hard times which they then recalled in their work to build their iconic images: "each has mirrored . . . the predicament of the 'little man' in modern society," the

Biography
An essay on Charlie Chaplin written by Aaron Hale is available. C harlie Chaplin was born Charles Spencer Chaplin in London, England on 16 April 1889. His parents, Charles Chaplin, Sr and Hannah Hill were music hall entertainers but separated shortly after Charlie was born, leaving Hannah to provide for her children. In 1896 when Hannah was no longer able to care for her children, Charlie and his brother Sydney were admitted to Lambeth Workhouse and later, Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute Children. Charlie had already debuted in the music hall in 1894, when he had sung a song after his mother was taken hoarse.

I am writing a full-length biography of Charlie Chaplin and want to establish internet communication with film historians, cultural historians, political historians, biographers and psychoanalysts.
Some topics of interest include: Chaplin, British Music Hall, Cockney Culture and Humor, Mime, Silent Film Comedy, Hollywood (1912-1952), The American Political Scene (1930's-1950's) and relevant information about the public and private lives of other people who were intimately, personally or casually connected to Chaplin. This extensive list would include:
  • Family Members
  • Ex-Wives and Lovers
  • Friends, Colleagues and Acquaintances
  • Personal and Political Enemies
  • Plus anyone else you might think of.
I have already written about political aspects of Chaplin: What Made Charlie Run , and psychological aspects of his art: Chaplin's The Kid and Charlie Chaplin's Film Heroines
I would be interested in reading anything anyone else has written published or unpublished. Please contact me at: weissman7@aol.com

Still does BY ANN DOUGLAS very few weeks, outside the movie theater in virtually any American town in the late 1910s, stood the life-size cardboard figure of a small trampoutfitted in tattered, baggy pants, a cutaway coat and vest, impossibly large, worn-out shoes and a battered derby hatbearing the inscription I AM HERE TODAY. An advertisement for a Charlie Chaplin film was a promise of happiness, of that precious, almost shocking moment when art delivers what life cannot, when experience and delight become synonymous, and our investments yield the fabulous, unmerited bonanza we never get past expecting. WHAT MADE CHARLIE RUN?
FROM DESTITUTION TO GLOBAL ACCLAIM: A LOOK AT CHAPLIN ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH
Los Angeles Times, April 16, 1989
By STEPHEN M. WEISSMAN MD, Weissman is a practicing psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in Washington, D.C. He is currently writing a psychological biography of Charlie Chaplin. This article reflects Weissman's research on Chaplin's life and his interpretation of the politics of the comedian's times. In addition to being an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at George Washington University Medical School and an Adjunct Professor at The American University School of Public Affairs, Weissman was recently a visiting lecturer at the USC School of Cinema and Television. He has written biographical studies of Frederick Douglass and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
No one was more shocked than Charlie Chaplin himself by his Little Tramp character's meteoric rise to fame in this country in 1915.
Having arrived on a vaudeville tour just five years earlier, the shy and reserved former British music hall comedian confided: "I can't understand all this stuff. I am just a little nickel comedian trying to make people laugh. They act as though I were the king of England."

A monthly episode contains writings and pictures based on that month's charlie chaplin picture.
    http://inkblot.vurtified.com/about.html
The idea for Inkblot came to me several years ago while I was combing the net for something or another. I happened upon a series of pictures of Charlie Chaplin. I've always had a thing for black and white photography, and these Chaplin photographs were amazing... stories all in themselves. Which led me here. I post pictures; you write stories. There will be one picture per "episode," episodes appearing monthly. You will see it, become breathtakingly inspired, and write a story about it. I will then post a certain number of them (not yet determined) here for all the world to read. Submissions for episodes are posted all at one time. The hope is that people who like to write will submit their stories, and each episode will have a variety of stories and writing styles all springing from the same picture. So, what can you do here? You can read the current episode, or you can look at the picture and submit a story for the upcoming episode, after reviewing the guidelines , of course. I also accept photography submissions , if you're into that sort of thing. Comments, concerns, confessions?

    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/chaplin_c.html
C harlie Chaplin was one of the greatest and widely loved silent movie stars. From "Easy Street" (1917) to "Modern Times" (1936), he made many of the funniest and most popular films of his time. He was best known for his character, the naive and lovable Little Tramp. The Little Tramp, a well meaning man in a raggedy suit with cane, always found himself wobbling into awkward situations and miraculously wobbling away. More than any other figure, it is this kind-hearted character that we associate with the time before the talkies. Born in London in 1889, Chaplin first visited America with a theater company in 1907. Appearing as "Billy" in the play "Sherlock Holmes", the young Chaplin toured the country twice. On his second tour, he met Mack Sennett and was signed to Keystone Studios to act in films. In 1914 Chaplin made his first one-reeler, "Making a Living". That same year he made thirty-four more short films, including "Caught in a Cabaret", "Caught in the Rain", "The Face on the Bar-Room Floor", and "His Trysting Place". These early silent shorts allowed very little time for anything but physical comedy, and Chaplin was a master at it. Harold Lloyd played the daredevil, hanging from clocks, and

Deseret News movie critic Robert Downey Jr. gives a superb performance that has "Oscar" written all over it as Charlie Chaplin in the new biographical film "Chaplin," by director Richard Attenborough ("Gandhi," "Cry Freedom").
Unfortunately, the film itself is less successful, a superficial skimming of the life and times of the great comedian and innovative film-maker. In fact, so much time is spent on Chaplin's self-destructive penchant for young girls that it might as well have been titled "Chaplin and His Women."
Still, Downey's surprisingly dead-on impersonation of Chaplin is an absolute knockout and well worth the price of admission. (Be advised, however, that unlike Chaplin's own pictures, this is far from a family film and contains quite a bit of female nudity.)
The film is told in flashback to the fictional editor (Anthony Hopkins) who is working with the aged Chaplin on his autobiography in the early '60s.
