His parents, Charles Chaplin, Sr and Hannah Hill were music hall entertainers but separated shortly after Charlie was born, leaving Hannah to provide for her children. In 1896 when Hannah was no longer able to care for her children, Charlie and his brother Sydney were admitted to Lambeth Workhouse and later, Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute Children. Charlie had already debuted in the music hall in 1894, when he had sung a song after his mother was taken hoarse.

London. Chaplin began on the music-hall stage and then joined a pantomime troupe. While on tour in the United States, he was recruited by Mack Sennett . Chaplin merged physical grace, disrespect for authority, and sentimentality into a highly individual character he created for the Keystone Company. In appearance, his Little Tramp wore a gentlemen's derby, cane, and neatly kept moustache with baggy trousers and oversized shoes. He affected a unique, bow-legged dance-walk. Chaplin skipped from one studio to another in search of greater control over his work, finally cofounding United Artists in 1919 with D. W. Griffith , Douglas Fairbanks , and Mary Pickford Chaplin's features include The Kid The Gold Rush The Circus City Lights Modern Times The Great Dictator Monsieur Verdoux (1947), and

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born April 16,1889 in London to Hannah and Charles Chaplin Sr. Hannah,a music-hall entertainer.Charles Sr.a vaudevillian, died when Charlie was very young.Sydney Chaplin half brother of Charlie and four years older, was later to be doing some acting of his own in a few of his famous brother's films.
When Chaplin was 21,he became a member of a traveling music-hall company. Soon after he arrived in America,he took the world by a storm and the Chaplinmania began! This is how he described in his "My Own Autobiography" how the Tramp was born.
"I was in my street clothes and had nothing to do,so i stood there where Sennett could see me...'We need some gags here,' he said, then turned to me. 'Put on a comedy make-up,anything will do.'I had no idea what make-up to put on...However,on the way to the wardrobe, I thought i would dress in baggy pants, big shoes,a cane and a derby hat...I had no idea of the character. But the moment I was dressed, the clothes and the make-up made me feel the person he was...When I entered (The hotel lobby set) I felt I was an impostor posing as one of the guest, but in reality I was a Tramp just wanting a little shelter I entered and stumbled over the foot of a lady.I turned and raised my hat apologetically, then turned and stumbled over a cuspidor, then turned and raised my hat to the cuspidor. Behind the camera, they began to laugh..."
Chaplin had married four times. His first wife was(actress)Mildred Harris. They had a child who died at three days old. Mildred nicknamed the baby boy'Little Mouse'.

Filmmaking at the beginning of the twentieth century was in its infancy. The techniques at that time could only show people and objects as they were, with an occasional photographic trick. As technology progressed, so did the effects we saw on film. We no longer find it amazing that a star ship can appear to rush through space at "warp speed". We see whole cities demolished, knowing they are truly intact, and accept this as the norm. So to envision people flocking to a theater to see a movie that was entirely silent is a bit incredulous to us now. But that was the reality of the early twentieth century.
Films with sound did not appear until 1928. After all, radio had just made its commercial debut on November 2,1920, when KDKA in Pittsburgh made the announcement that Warren Harding had been elected president. Radio was one of the most popular developments of the twenties.
We've come so far, and yet one thing remains the same. That is talent. Talent in any age is just as great. Our perception of what talent is may be influenced by time and culture, but the great geniuses never diminish, except in the public memory. The previous century produced many greats in the arts. And yet few would argue that Charles Chaplin was probably the greatest of all.

Recommended Reading To provide you with a better perspective on the Charlie Chaplin FBI file, Fade To Black has asked Lindsay Young Professor of Cinema Studies and American Studies at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Chuck Maland, for some assistance. Dr. Maland has published three books and many articles and reviews focusing on movies and their relationship to American culture. His book, Chaplin and American Culture , won the Theater Library Association Award for best book in the area of recorded performance (film, radio, or television) in 1989. We hope that his great expertise on the Little Tramp and American Cinema will bring great insight into the FBI File.
The FBI and the Little Tramp: An Introduction

In response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Fade to Black has obtained 2063 pages of FBI files on Charlie Chaplin. To help readers make sense of these documents (and p erhaps to save them from large-scale eye strain from sitting in front of monitors too long!), Fade To Black has asked me to provide an introduction to Chaplin and his FBI files. After sketching an outline of Chaplin's career and suggesting why the FBI became interested in him, I'll describe what the FBI files are like and how to read them, followed by some suggestions about particularly important sections of the files.

I baffi esprimono vanità. La giacca abbottonata stretta, il bastoncino e tutto il comportamento del vagabondo rivelano il desiderio di assumere un'aria galante, ardita, disinvolta. Egli cerca di affrontare coraggiosamente il mondo, di andare avanti a forza di bluff: e di questo è consapevole. E ne è così consapevole che riesce a ridere di se stesso e anche a commiserarsi un po'" humor e phatos "Charlot garzone di caffè"
