Graham Chapman Biography
by John Cleese
Doctor turned leading actor? Yes this is the rags to riches story of GRAHAM CHAPMAN, the boyish ex-medic who forsook forceps for fun and found there was more gold in them thar' Hollywood Hills than there ever was in them thar' pills. A policeman's son, the wacky Chapman majored in medicine before the lure of the dollar prised him from Britain's penniless and collapsing National Health Service . But his expert and expensive medical training was not wasted: it formed the basis for a zany, madcap, off-the-wall TV series featuring a team of whacky girl-chasing interns struggling with the appalling problems of treating the desperately ill in an impoverished, crumbling, under-equipped Limey hospital. Next, Britain's funniest ex-doctor won international acclaim for his portrayal of King Arthur in " Monty Python and the Holy Grail ". Says tall, blonde pipe-smoking former medic Chapman "That was my big break. From now on it was all 'go' to the very top. But I had to chose my next role carefully". So carefully that he waited four years. "Then I saw the script for ' Life of Brian ' and wow!" confides lean pharmacologically trained Graham.

Graham Chapman
Born 8 January 1941 in Leicester, Midlands
Died 4 October, 1989 at the age of 48 from cancer
Education: Melton Mowbray Grammar School and Cambridge
Utterly useless fact: Qualified medical doctor forsook stethoscope for antler headdress.
Chapman was always the most self-conscious Python, with nervous mannerisms, pipe smoking, homosexuality, mad comedy and plenty of drink: his performance was often affected. Over Christmas 1977 he gave up the booze for good but still retained that off-kilter Python edge. He'd always been the maddest of the team, but provided some of Python's best performances.
Chapman's starring role in "The Life of Brian" is the triumph of his career in comedy. Post-Python, Chapman conducted a comic lecture tour of college campuses throughout the U.S. and Australia, featuring reminiscences on Python, memories of friend Keith Moon and his legendary one-man wrestling act. In 1983, Chapman starred in, produced and co-wrote the pirate film "Yellowbeard". He also starred in "The Odd Job."
Chapman and longtime companion David Sherlock adopted a son, who died in 1992. Tragically, Chapman was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsils in 1988. With Chapman on the day of his death were Terry Jones, John Cleese and Michael Palin. Chapman passed away on 4 October 1989, just a day short of the 20th anniversary of the first broadcast of Monty Python's Flying Circus. Jones , speaking of Graham, said it was "the worst case of party pooping I had ever seen".

Welcome to The Graham Chapman Archives. The Archives was established in 1997 when David Sherlock, Graham Chapman's longtime companion and partner, appointed Jim Yoakum as Director. Together, the on-going goal of the Archives is to preserve, protect and make available Graham's work, and to keep Graham's name alive and before the public (even if he can't be). A first offering, the book Graham Crackers: Fuzzy Memories, Sillybits and Outright Lies by Monty Python's Graham Chapman , was published in 1998 by Career Press . It has received high (and low) praise from critics and fans alike, and even briefly vaulted the late Graham to the top of the best-selling humour books charts! A second offering, the book OJRIL: The Completely Incomplete Graham Chapman , was published in December 1999, from Batsford Books . OJRIL is a collection of previously unpublished and (mostly) unproduced scripts written by Graham in collaboration with Douglas Adams, David Sherlock and others. Scripts include "Our Show For Ringo Starr" and "Jake's Journey." The Archives hopes to make available future releases of Graham work, and we are constantly looking for material to preserve at the Archives, whether it's an interview (print, radio or TV), photographs, rare or unusual video/film footage or the like. If you feel you have something unique about Graham, and would like to donate it to The Graham Chapman Archives, please email us at

The Graham Weekly Album Review #1007 Tracy Chapman: New Beginning by George Graham
(Elektra Records 61850 As broadcast on WVIA-FM 11/8/95) Now it seems like a long time ago, and by pop music standards, I suppose it is, but it was in 1988 that a strange thing happened on the commercial music scene acoustic folk-based singer-songwriters had a brief moment in the popular limelight. Suzanne Vega, and especially Tracy Chapman enjoyed hit recordings and perhaps just as importantly helped to launch a folk music boomlet that is still with us, though no longer on the pop charts. The attention that Vega and Chapman received helped pave the way for a bevy of fine singer-songwriters to land recording contracts with record companies both big and small. Since then, both Ms. Vega and Ms. Chapman have been releasing recordings quite infrequently. While Vega became more experimental on her last album 99.9 Farenheit Degrees , Chapman has been staying more or less true to her original sound. She seems to be continuing a pattern of releasing an album each three years. Her third and last album Matters of the Heart in 1992 followed its predecessor Crossroads by three years. Now after a similarly long wait, she is out with
