WILLIAM C. CHASE, a worthy pioneer of Rock County, of 1836, was born in Bradford,
Orange County, Vermont, on the 19th day of December, 1803, and was the son of Moses CHASE. He was married in his native State Oct. 16, 1828, to Miss Mary GILSON, and with his family moved to La Porte, Ind., about 1835. In 1836, he emigrated to Wisconsin Territory and settled in what is now Rock County being the first settler in the town of Bradford, which he named after his native town in Vermont. He entered Government land, engaged in the cattle business and owned large tracts of land. Owing to unprofitable investments in cattle, he lost heavily. Hoping to retrieve his fortunes, he removed with his stock to northern Wisconsin, but the panic of 1857, which prostrated all business was disastrous to him, and in 1860 he went to Pike's Peak, joining the adventurous bands of gold-seekers. He continued in the mountains until his death, which occurred on July 21, 1863.
There were five children born to Mr. and Mrs. CHASE. Mary, the eldest, is the wife of Jacob B.

Art Institute of Chicago Chicago, IL http://www.artic.edu/aic/index.html William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes A n exhibition of the extraordinary landscape paintings of one of America's most celebrated Impressionist artists can be seen in Gallery 171 of The Art Institute of Chicago's Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Building through November 26, 2000. William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes brings together more than 30 major paintings that span a brief but formative period (1886-1893) in Chase's career and represent the artist's first serious foray into an intense exploration of the American urban landscape. Painted mainly in the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, these airy, light-filled canvases also helped establish Chase's reputation as the foremost Impressionist in the United States as well as the "inventor" of the American park subject. (left: A City Park, 1867, oil on canvas, 13 5/8 x 19 5/8 inches, The Art Institute of Chicago, Bequest of Dr. John J. Ireland, 1968.88) William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) was one of the first American painters to document turn-of-the-century urban life in the public spaces devoted to leisure activities. Chase was, in fact, one of the most prominent artists in the United States around the turn of the 20th century. Celebrated for his expertise in a variety of styles and media, Chase applied his considerable technical talents to an equally wide range of genres portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. In 1886, he began to depict views of the public parks and harbors of Brooklyn and Manhattan, utilizing methods clearly inspired by French Impressionism, only to abandon these urban subjects in the early 1890s as abruptly as he had adopted them.

New research into Chase's personal life and the locations of his urban landscapes has revealed the significance of these paintings. The exhibition will be on view at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from May 26 through August 13, 2000. it will travel to The Art Institute of Chicago (September 7-November 26, 2000) and to The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (December 13, 2000-March 11, 2001). (left: In the Studio , BMA) The thirty-five paintings and pastels in the exhibition mark a pivotal period in Chase's career and in American art history. The works are the first significant studies of American landscape executed in the Impressionist technique. These landscapes led Chase to a breakthrough in his painting career and the renewed acclaim of American art critics. The works feature scenes of Brooklyn's Prospect and Tompkins Parks, Central Park, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Gowanus Bay, Bath Beach, and the painter's family backyard in Brooklyn. Shortly after Chase's death, the prominent American art collector, Duncan Phillips, reflected on the particular appeal of Chase's interiors, describing them as having an "immediate charm." "It is more than a trick of cool light on reflecting surfaces, mahogany table-tops and hard wood floors," he explained. "It is the hint of once familiar moments long forgotten, a sentiment of the quiet dignity of a patrician home."' Although Chase deplored the poetic, storytelling nature of Victorian art, his interiors do possess a nostalgic quality and do engage the viewer as a participant in the scene. This is especially true in his painting, Did You Speak to Me?. Both in its compositional devices and its title, the work solicits a response from the viewer. While the painting clearly focuses on the girl's implied movement as she has turned to face him, the rest of the composition is sketched in more loosely. Although Chase is not known to have used the camera as a direct aid in composing his works (unlike his fellow American artists, Thomas Eakins and Theodore Robinson), he was well aware of how it could be used to highlight and emphasize an image, and he put this knowledge to good use. "You can have only one focus in a picture," he advised his students, ". . . be like a camera, and as you focus one spot the others lose in distinctness."

Introduction When William Strong built this house in 1879 it was considered "the handsomest private ediface in the county" The two story structure was designed in the French Second Empire style with a shallow mansard roof, pedimented pavilion with mansard roof tower and roof cresting. At the time of its construction the house was estimated to cost about $8,000. Spring Valley, located in the southeast corner of Minnesota, is centrally located to Rochester, Austin, Winona and LaCrosse. The Strong estate originally included a house, several livestock barns and a carriage shed with a turntable for turning the carriage around without having to back it up. Today, the only two buildings to survive are the house and the cob shed, which was later used as a garage. Both structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places Gift Certificates Do you have a hard to shop for loved one who "has everything"? William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes
    September 9-November 26, 2000
Galleries 170-171 William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes brings together more than 35 paintings by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), America's most celebrated Impressionist painter. Dating from 1886 to 1893, these major works represent Chase's first serious exploration of the American landscape and have helped to establish his reputation as a pioneer Impressionist in the United States and the "inventor" of the park as subject matter. A completely modern artist, he aligned himself with advanced European art by adapting and "Americanizing" compositional treatments of space preferred by such artists as Edgar Degas and Gustave Caillebotte. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue will invite audiences to consider their own reactions to and use of the city park by relating Chase's unique vision to the efforts of late 19th- and early 20th-century city planners to use park spaces to revitalize the urban landscape. The Art Institute of Chicago's presentation will further explore this fascinating aspect with an innovative introductory gallery using artworks from the museum's own wide-ranging collection. The primary purpose of this introductory section is to offer audiences a broad context within which to examine the importance of urban public space and its relationship to the rising importance of leisure in the 19th century. In addition, the gallery will more closely examine the influence that Chicago's parks and other public spaces have had an artists who came to the city to capture its burgeoning aesthetic allure.
