This page is dedicated to Montgomery Clift , my favorite actor. Before there was Brando, before there was Dean, there was Monty. Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor starred in 3 movies together, but " A Place In The Sun" was the first time they appeared on screen together and the combination was pure fireworks.Today they are still considered the most beautiful couple to ever appear together on the silver screen. Monty and Elizabeth Taylor Publicity shot for A place in the sun.

Monty in the Heiress. After spending several years on Broadway, Clift finally headed for Hollywood and a career spanning 17 films. He refused to sign the almost-obligatory studio contract and vowed to play only quality roles for the best directors. In his first film, Howard Hawks casted him opposite John Wayne and the critic raved about his performance. The rest is history. RED RIVER
Oscar nomination: Original story (Borden Chase).

Montgomery Clift
Edward Montgomery Clift was born on October 17, 1920, just after his twin sister Roberta and eighteen months after his brother Brooks. Their father William made a lot of money in banking but was quite poor during the depression. Their mother Ethel "Sunny" was born out of wedlock and spent much of her life and the family fortune finding her illustrious southern lineage and raising her children as aristocrats. At thirteen Monty appeared on Broadway (Fly Away Home), remaining in New York theatre for over ten years before coming to Hollywood. By that time he was an accomplished actor, notable for the intensity with which he researched and entered into his roles.

He was also by that time exclusively homosexual, though he maintained a number of close friendships with theatre women (heavily promoted by studio publicists). His film debut was Red River (1948) with John Wayne quickly followed by his early personal success The Search (1948) (Oscar nominations for this, A Place in the Sun (1951), From Here to Eternity (1953) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). By 1950 he was troubled with allergies and colitis (the army had rejected him in WWII for chronic diarrhea) and, along with pill problems he was alcoholic. He spent a great deal of time and money on psychiatry.
In 1956 during filming of Raintree County (1957) he ran his car into a tree after leaving a party at Elizabeth Taylor's, it was she who saved him from choking by pulling out two teeth lodged in his throat. His smashed face was rebuilt, he reconciled with his estranged father, but he continued bedeviled by dependency on drugs and guilt over homosexuality. Monty managed to slowly develop a more sensible lifestyle back in his New York brownstone, and he was set to play in Taylor's Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967), when his companion Lorenzo James found him lying on top of his bed, dead from what the autopsy called "occlusive coronary artery disease" on July 23, 1966.

SINOPSIS

NEW: An updated Vote DVD update IN THE WORDS
of one of his biographers, Montgomery Clift was a beautiful loser. Beautiful, yes. A loser? No. For Monty became one of the great movie stars of the post-war era following a distinguished career on Broadway. He earned four Oscar nominations, drew reams of critical acclaim for his performances and his picture graced dozens of magazine covers and thousands of bedroom walls around the world. His unique style of acting influenced contemporaries and generations to come. But Monty suffered considerably. That inner pain was not invented and no one could cure it. Montgomery Clift would ultimately destroy himself through a combination of drink and drugs. And today, in Britain at least, he is largely forgotten. Not for Clift the idol status of a Jimmy Dean, for he died quietly at home in middle age. Not for him the enduring fame of fellow stars like Cary Grant or John Wayne for he died with just 17 films to his name.

Why montgomery clift? Meaning Why do I like him? Because montgomery clift wasmore human than the rest of us. Yup, there you have ithe was more human.
    http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Guild/6851/monty.html
Why Montgomery Clift? Meaning: Why do I like him? Why should you read about him? Why is he so special that I should devote part of my site to him rather than, say, one of today's actors?
I'll tell you why. Ready? Got a good strong grip on your socks, pally?
Because Montgomery Clift was more human than the rest of us.
Yup, there you have ithe was more human. He was flawed, he had lots and lots of problems, personal and otherwise (which I won't go into here). You can tell, from every movie of his that I've seen at least, that here is a man who could feel, who knew all about suffering. And he can make you understand the pain and emotional torment his characters are enduring. A scan of a picture I have of Montgomery Clift
(I think it might be from the movie Wild River, but don't quote me on that)
What's more, he makes us understand more about being human. Here's a few examples of what I mean:

I n From Here To Eternity, he plays your average career soldier, or rather the character would have been average had anyone else been playing him. With Monty, the transition, from sensitive bugler who refuses to box anymore because he doesn't want to hurt anyone else to the sort of man who could knife a fellow soldier to death in an alley out of vengeance, is believable. Not only believable, but understandable. Subtlety is the name of the game. Though we're never sure quite what he's thinking, we can tell what he's feeling, and he doesn't need to overact to get even the slightest nuance of emotion across.
