I am not the person to review this movie. Being completely unfamiliar with the punk rock craze born in Manchester, England in the 1970's, I entered into the world of Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People" not knowing what to expect. What I got was an experience I won't soon forget, as much as I might like to; the film is like an acid trip that leaves you wondering whether or not you really enjoyed yourself. It never stops moving, it has a frantic, manic energy to it that is admirably well-paced in places, and for those familiar with its subject matter, it will no doubt provide them with two hours of nostalgic heaven.
For those not in the know, it's likely the film won't register. Odds are if you've never heard the name Tony Wilson before in your lifetime, you're not going to care about his exploits in the birth of a new wave of music. As documented throughout the movie, we witness Wilson's (Steve Coogan) interaction with groups like Joy Division, his reporting ventures for Granada T.V., his founding of Factory Records and the Hacienda Club, which could hold its own with America's own Club 54. The manner in which Winterbottom carries out the proceedings is quite unique, not quite a documentary, and nowhere near a third-person point-of-view. Coogan's Wilson, a jovial, at-times humorous character, gestures directly toward the camera, as if inviting us on a tour of his life as it happens, moment by moment.

Buy or Rent the DVD online No record collection is complete without at least one contribution from Factory Records, the Manchester-based label that introduced a stunned world to Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays. Now director Michael Winterbottom brings the story of Factory Records to the screen in a dazzling collage of sex, drugs, music and dance. Steve Coogan is Tony Wilson, the Granada TV presenter who, inspired by a Sex Pistols gig in June 1976, decides to set up a record label to capitalise of Manchester's untapped reservoir of musical talent. From these little acorns grows the legendary Hacienda, which opened in 1982 and went on to become one of the most famous dance clubs in the world. But with success comes setbacks: the suicide of Joy Division's charismatic front man Ian Curtis, the drug-addled excesses of Shaun Ryder and a series of disastrous business deals that ultimately led to the closure of the Hacienda and the end of Factory records. Oh well: they didn't call it Mad-chester for nothing.

Steve Coogan
Character actor Steve Coogan is most famous for two characters: unctuous television host Alan Partridge (as seen in Knowing Me, Knowing Yule ) and dim-bulb Paul Calf ( Paul Calf's Video Diary and its sequel Pauline Calf's Video Wedding ). In his 1995 series Coogan's Run , he got to play six different characters who co-exist in the same connected universe (or at least Paul Calf manages to cameo in each story). In "Get Calf" Paul is the center of attention as gangsters come after him. "Dearth of a Salesman" shows the life of a shallow salesman. "Handyman For All Seasons," an elderly village fix-it man in rural England must fight progress. "natural born quizzers" reveals the life stories of two nutters who escape from jail and hope to wreak revenge for an incident on a television school quiz show 20 years earlier. Rounding out the series are "Thursday Night Fever" and "The Curator." His latest creation is Portuguese pop singer (and slimeball) Tony Ferrino . Coogan's first dramatic role came in 1997's The Fix , where he played a crusading journalist who uncovers a soccer scandal. Alan Partridge finally resurfaced in 1997 in the "fly on a wall" mockumentary series

Steve Coogan is standing in his underpants in a caravan somewhere outside Manchester. The last time I saw him in his Calvin Kleins was in Cambridge in 1993. He was staggering around a small, cold room, swearing as he struggled into a corset, a 34B bra and a pair of tights. Twenty minutes later, Pauline Calf was strutting on stage in a slutty dress, white stilettos and a blond wig. It's the middle of October last year and, back in the caravan, Coogan has slipped into some Armani jeans, a nice jumper and Camper shoes. His hair is cut short, his curls are almost gone and he is wearing glasses. He's skinnier than he used to be. This, he explains, is because he is currently starring in a film in which he is supposed to have some appeal as a romantic lead. "I've been seeing a personal trainer for The Parole Officer he says, reaching for his cigarettes. "I was eating only grilled fish and steamed vegetables until I'd done my vest-and-underpants scene. Then I started to eat tubs of ice cream." He makes two mugs of Earl Grey tea and sits down. "I don't have a problem with wandering around the set in my underpants. I've shown my arse on several occasions on screen, both as Paul Calf and Alan Partridge. I'm prepared to make my self look an arse, to humiliate myself." He drags hard on his cigarette. "When I used to do Pauline Calf, I had to shave my legs and arms twice before going on stage. As Paul Calf, I've worn horrible nylon paisley Y-fronts. I looked awful then, too; so flabby and white." He smiles. "That's when being funny mattered more to me than being vain."

Steve Coogan Steve Coogan plans new adult cartoon - 09/10/02
Steve Coogan is making an animated comedy show about a group of animals liberated from a vivisection lab. I Am Not An Animal is about a group of creatures who live a pampered life in a luxurious "club class" wing of a secret lab.
It is being billed as a "darkly entertaining adult animation series" by the BBC and will be shown in six 30-minute episodes. Voices of the characters, which include a horse, cat, sparrow, monkey, rat and dog, will be provided by Coogan, Human Remains star Julia Davis, Big Train regular Kevin Eldon, comedian Arthur Mathews and Amelia Bulmore.
In the lab the animals are fed vintage wine and exquisite food and are blissfully unaware of the outside world. But they are appalled when they are released from captivity by animal rights activists and are forced to rough it in their natural surroundings. Character actor Steve Coogan is most famous for two characters: unctuous television host Alan Partridge (from Norwich) and dim-bulb Paul Calf.

Steve Coogan plays Tony Wilson in the film
By Ian Youngs
BBC News Online Comic and actor Steve Coogan talks to BBC News Online about his latest role in the film 24 Hour Party People, which will be in competition at Cannes film festival. It seems fitting that comedian Steve Coogan should be playing the central role in a film about the golden era of Manchester's music scene. Coogan, better known for his TV comic creation Alan Partridge than his film roles, is a Manchester lad - a "defiant northerner" as he puts it - and a fan of the music that the film, 24 Hour Party People, revolves around. Wilson (left) and Coogan met at the film's première
Unfortunately, when the great Mancunian bands like Joy Division and The Buzzcocks came along in the late 1970s, Coogan was barely in his teens and too young to go to the gigs. And he missed the city's next musical high point a decade later, when acid house arrived at the city's Hacienda nightclub and gave birth to club culture and superstar DJs.

e-mail this article Beatification of the Beat A t the height of the Hacienda's glory, founder and Factory Records label owner Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan) stands in his famous Manchester club. Regarding the assembled crowd of hallucinogen-fueled youth, he proclaims, "This is the moment when even the white man starts dancing. Welcome to Manchester." Lights flash. Music throbs. The moment, recalled in 24 Hour Party People , marks the exuberant beginning of rave and club culture as we now know it. 24 Hour Party People names the '80s and early '90s Madchester scene a "historical" event, while also making it feel emphatically immediate. Despite Wilson's assertions that every band performance, every club night, every album will stand as testaments to an important musical era, the movement appears always to be a celebration of Now: the fleetingness of the magical pre-dawn hours, the flashy hedonism of designer drugs, the immediacy of driving electronic rhythms. The movie begins in 1976 with Wilson, a reporter for Manchester-based Granada TV, hang-gliding as part of a news stunt. After brief bursts of flight and bruising crashes into the underbrush, Wilson self-consciously turns to face the camera and explains that during the film, hang-gliding will serve as a metaphor for his life and the life of the Manchester club scene: "I have one word for you: Icarus. If you get it, great. If you don't, it doesn't matter." Wilson continues to address the audience in virtually every scene, referring to his actions as "postmodern" he's plainly a poster boy for the ironic generation. All of this self-referential smugness can bring

http://www.swns.com/vaults/archive.htm
Archive CHRIS EVANS STINKS!! That's the way we would have presented our classic 1992 tale about 'madcap' TV presenter Chris Evans breaking wind on live TV. The Sun, The Mirror and The Sport all ran the story. . . Wacky TV presenter Chris Evans had a big blow-out yesterday on live TV. Astonished viewers saw the outrageous front-man of new Channel 4 morning show The Big Breakfast collapse in hysterics after breaking wind. He was in the middle of a sketch with the show's two fluffy puppets Zig and Zag when the gust hit home. A puppetmaster hidden under the table made Zig exclaim: ''Ugh, what's that smell ?'' Zag replied ''He's done a rudie.'' Giggling cameramen cut to his co-presenter Gaby Roslin, who was blissfully unaware of Chris's bum note. Spokesman Kris Thykier said: ''I felt sorry for the two puppet operators trapped under the desk. ''It could have been the excitement or Chris may have had too big a breakfast.'' Here's another golden oldie - this time from 1993. . . Stand-up comic Steve Coogan - foul-mouthed drunk 'Paul Calf' in the new Jonathan Ross show - was breathalysed by police who mistook him for a REAL boozer, it was revealed yesterday. Funnyman Steve made the wrong impression after doing an outrageous routine on last week's Saturday Zoo.
