SGT. Vincent Howell Kelly
Sergeant Vincent Howell Kelly was a Virginian by birth and moved to an area of Kentucky now known as Middlesboro. He and his wife operated a general store in this area until the begining of the Southern independence. When war broke out, Vincent and his wife moved back to Lee County, Virginia and Vincent joined the 64th Virginia Infantry. Vincent was 1st Sergeant of Company I. His company was surrendered and Vincent spent two and a half years as a POW at Camp Douglas. He took the Oath to the Union after Lee surrendered.
Vincent Howell Kelly (1833-1904) is the son of John Kelly and Letitia Horton. John Kelly was a veteran of the War of 1812. John Kelly is the son of Richard Kelly and Catherine Howell. John Kelly was a Revolutionary war soldier and he served in Col. George Roger Clark's Virginia Regiment.
On February 8, 1860, in Lee County Virginia, Vincent Howell Kelly married Ezra Jane Graham. One week later the couple left Lee County Virginia and rode horseback across Cumberland Gap. They settled in what is now Bell County, Kentucky near the present town of Middlesboro. They operated a country store. Merchandise had to be hauled by wagon from Knoxville or Bristol. Both of these cities, were over a hundred miles away. Their customers came from as far away as Pine, Laurel and the Big and Little Black Mountains. For a time all went well.

White, First Sergeant of Company F, 2nd United States Sharpshooters, 1861-1865 Editor, Russell C. White The 2nd United States Sharpshooter Regiment was one of the elite units of the Army of the Potomac. Composed of expert marksmen, this regiment served throughout the war, distinguishing itself on every battlefield on which it fought. Wyman White joined a New Hampshire company of the 2nd U.S.S.S. in November 1861. He served in every battle in which the regiment was engaged with the exceptions of South Mountain and Antietam. These memoirs, written after the war, provide a vivid picture of army life and battle action. His recall of detail suggests that these reminiscences were based on diaries he kept throughout the war. Wyman White's manuscripts is loaded with personal insights, humor, and superb detail of events, personalities, equipage, uniforms, and soldier life. The feisty White provides an important look at the 2nd regiment of U.S.S.S.most other accounts of sharpshooters were by members of the 1st U.S.S.S. Virtually all aspects of soldier life are covered, from snowball battles to burials. This book is sure to become one of the most important sources not only on Berdan's Sharpshooters but also on the Army of the Potomac.

Spotsylvania Court House
Ni River, Harris Farm Virginia
American Civil War
May 8-21, 1864
After the Wilderness, Grant's and Meade's advance on Richmond by the left flank was stalled at Spotsylvania Court House on May 8. This two-week battle was a series of combats along the Spotsylvania front. The Union attack against the Bloody Angle at dawn, May 12-13, captured nearly a division of Lee's army and came near to cutting the Confederate army in half. Confederate counterattacks plugged the gap, and fighting continued unabated for nearly 20 hours in what may well have been the most ferociously sustained combat of the Civil War. On May 19, a Confederate attempt to turn the Union right flank at Harris Farm was beaten back with severe casualties. Union generals Sedgwick (VI Corps commander) and Rice were killed. Confederate generals Johnson and Steuart were captured, Daniel and Perrin mortally wounded. On May 21, Grant disengaged and continued his advance on Richmond. Result(s): Inconclusive (Grant continued his offensive.)

US Army Women's Museum - Fort Lee, Virginia Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783) Molly Corbin - Photo of illustration by Herbert Knotel During the Revolutionary War, a few courageous females served in combat alongside their husbands. When Fort Washington on Manhattan Island came under attack by the Hessians under British Command on November 16, 1776, Margaret Corbin stood at a cannon beside her husband John and handled ammunition. When he was fatally wounded, she took his place at the cannon until she herself was wounded. After the battle, her comrades took her across the Hudson River to Fort Lee, New Jersey, where she received medical care. On June 29, 1779, the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, the decision-making body of the executive branch, allocated Margaret a $30 stipend "to relieve her present necessities" and recommended that the Board of War give her a pension. Congress received a letter from the Board of War supporting the Executive Council's recommendation. Congress immediately authorized that Margaret receive, for life, one-half of the monthly pay allotted to soldiers and as a one-time allocation, a complete outfit of clothing. .
