Joan Crawford
Suffering for Love
by Gary Johnson
Go to: CAGNEY STANWYCK N o star ever suffered like Joan Crawford. It was her specialty. In movie after movie she was the victim of intolerable daughters, psychotic lovers, lecherous nightclub owners, corrupt politicians, and alcoholic husbands. Clad in pearls and mink, she faced the agonies with her chin held high, while her eyes filled with the tortures that she endured.
Dancing Lady
Possessed
She rose to stardom at MGM in the late twenties and early thirties, playing a series of women with lower-class origins who struggled to succeed in the big city. At this time in her career, Joan was stunningly beautiful. Too often we think of her as the matronly figure of Mildred Pierce (with melodramatically-thick eyebrows sweeping across her forehead), but in her early career, Joan played jazz-hot babies who danced till dawn in movies such as Our Dancing Daughters (1928), her first big success. And this image was reflected in her personal life as Joan's till-all-hours exploits frequently made fodder for the gossip columns. Settling into the depression era, MGM softened her flapper-girl image with

The scathing last word
on the patron saint of drag n' camp,
the Queen of the Land of the Cinema,
La Divina Jona!

BY HOWARD MANDELBAUM During an astonishing fifty-year career, Joan Crawford kept her name blazing in letters of fire. You could dislike her, but you could not ignore her. She was simply too big to be overlooked. Everything about her was oversize: her eyes, brows, mouth, jawline, shoulders, and of course, her gestures. In movie-star mythology, she was the original Cinderella Girl. Born to severe poverty and domestic unrest, she pulled herself up by her bra straps through hard work and determination. "Self-improvement" was her watch-word. Private joys and sorrows and professional slips and comebacks were recounted by newspapers and magazines to be digested like Hershey bars by an eager public. Ignorant shopgirls, waitresses, and factory slavies found inspiration and wish fulfillment in MGM 's scrubbed-up version of the Crawford saga. Mannequin sums up the genre. Crawford's Jessie Cassidy overcomes tremendous obstacles, eventually climbing out of the slums and into the arms of industrialist Spencer Tracy. What could be more American than upward mobility? In the skilled hands of director Frank Borzage, cliches become emotionally truthful. Unfortunately, few of the lady's other '30s vehicles have much aesthetic value. Adrian seems to be the auteur of most of them. Watching Chained is like flipping through a 1934 issue of Vogue.

Welcome to Joan Crawford Heaven
The Definition of a Movie Star
"Joan Crawford behaved like a star. Some do, some don't...You know, when Joan came on the set, somebody came on the set."
Rosalind Russell
"My first impression of Joan Crawford was of glamour. Glamour had nothing to do with aloofness or temperment, it had to do with friendliness, tremendous vitality and hard work, ambition and constant desire to improve her work, and to get knowledgeable about things that were
important to the work." James Stewart
"Joan was a star in every sense of the word. She didn't remind you of it in any particular way. You just knew it. And you didn't think any less of her for it." Henry Fonda
"Joan Crawford, as much as I dislike the lady, is a star." Humphrey Bogart
"She remains an electric presence even in some of her very unsatisfactory movies. Everything about her shone - her hair, her lips, her handsome hands, her graceful strong body and legs, her elegant feet. Everything looked as though it had sprung from nowhere, shining. Perhaps we know too much nowadays about what it takes to make a star and what a price is paid. All I know is that Joan Crawford shone. That's why they called her a star." Anna Raeburn

Screen Queen Turner Classic Movies Delivers a Fresh Look into the
Life of Smoldering Hollywood Icon Joan Crawford by Earl Dittman
originally appeared in Satellite Direct, August 2002 Unlike Bette Davis, Greta Garbo or many of the other iconic celluloid divas that dominated the silver screen during the Golden Age of Hollywood, Joan Crawford hasn't always been remembered for her stunning, immense body of work. For those unfamiliar with her contribution to classic films such as Mildred Pierce (which garnered her only Academy Award), The Women and Grand Hotel , Crawford is probably best known for her latter-day performances in campy horror films like Trog or the crazed mom who allegedly screamed "No more wire hangers!" at her adopted daughter (an incident documented in Christina Crawford's book, Mommie Dearest , and immortalized by actress Faye Dunaway in the outrageous 1981 biopic of the same name). However, documentary filmmaker Peter Fitzgerald has made it his personal mission to remind movie-lovers that while Crawford may have experienced a rocky personal life, on the big screen, she reigned supreme. It's a fact he clearly brings to light in his 90-minute documentary Joan Crawford: The Ultimate Movie Star , a project specially commissioned by Turner Classic Movies to launch the cable channel's month-long, 41-film tribute to the cinematic idol.
