She began dancing in nightclubs under the name Billie Cassin, and by 1924 she was dancing in Broadway musicals. On the screen from 1925, she made her initial impact as a vivacious Jazz Age flapper, dancing her way through such popular films as Our Dancing Daughters Dance, Fools, Dance (1931), and Dancing Lady (1933). Among her early successes as a dramatic actress were The Women Susan and God Strange Cargo (1940), and A Woman's Face Gradually she matured into a star of psychological melodramas. A major turning point in Crawford's career was her performance in Mildred Pierce (1945), for which she won an Academy Award. Chat JOAN CRAWFORD

    JOAN CRAWFORD
    Good Ol' Mommy Dearest!
Joan Crawford was born, Lucille Fay LeSuer, on March 23, 1908 in San Antonio, Texas. She was the product of a broken home before she was born in that her parents were already separated before the birth. Her mother had trouble keeping husbands after having married three times. Joan was fond of dancing and had entered several dance contests. She wanted a career in show business because it was much more glamorous than the odd jobs she was working. One dance contest she won landed her in a chorus line. Before long, Joan found herself dancing in the big cities of the Mid-West and along the Atlantic coast. After almost two years dancing, Joan decided to take a chance and packed her bags and moved to Los Angeles, California and the movie colony of Hollywood. She felt movies might afford her a chance of fame and glory and she was determined to succeed. Not long after arriving in California, Joan got her first bit role as a showgirl in PRETTY LADIES in 1925. Three other films quickly followed. Although the roles weren't much to speak of, Joan continued to toil away. Throughout 1927 and the first part of 1928, Joan was handed menial roles. That ended with the role of Diana Medford in OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS. That film was the one to get her elevated to star status. She had made the tough hurdle of making the "big time". Now she was faced with another.

    A Tribute to Joan Crawford
Modern audiences know Joan Crawford mostly from her later roles, in which she often played unglamourous or unsympathetic characters, or from what she freely admitted were some bad films, done out of boredom or for the money, or both. Like Bette Davis, her features did not exactly soften as she aged, and the release of a nasty biography and a popular biopic after her death didn't help matters, either. Her earlier films, which display her youthful beauty, are either lost or not being shown, further contributing to the fact that polls of least favorite actresses often feature Joan near the top. Most of her biographies are out of print or otherwise unavailable.
But the fact is that Joan Crawford was a star at MGM almost from the beginning, and continued to be a star for many decades, perfecting her persona as the working-class girl who broke into the ranks of the rich. It was a role that was particularly appealing to people during the Depression and war years. Recently she was voted #10 by the American Film Institute on their list of the greatest actresses of the first half of the century. She was nominated three times for Best Actress Oscars in the late 40s and early 50s, winning once, for
