David Cross INTERVIEW
by Ryan McKee Famous face, famous lines, not so famous name. David Cross should be a household name, however, when I bring up his name, many times people will blankly stare like a confused dog. ‘Mr. Show,’ I’ll say. Nothing. ‘ Scary Movie 2 Men In Black .’ Still confusion. Then, ‘Chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken pot pie,’ the now infamous line from Cross’s Just Shoot Me appearance and finally they’ll get it.
Now, Sub Pop puts out their first comedy album, a double-disc number, featuring Cross’s standup. Maybe he’ll finally get the respect and notoriety he deserves. Because we all know how much attention America pays to quality comedy CDs. That was sarcasm. This interview was done by Ryan McKee. That was not sarcasm. Why did you play music venues instead of comedy clubs on the tour where your new CD was recorded?
First of all, I love working with bands. I was at the very end of this tour with this one band, where we did like ten cities. Sub Pop called me up out of the blue, I had never talked to anybody over there, and asked if I’d like to record a comedy album. I explained the situation of what I was doing and said I’ll just get another tour together. So we went home and four or five weeks later we were back on road recording it. I don’t like comedy clubs that much anyway. It's much more fun to do it with bands opening up and at music clubs. I don’t like the structure of a club. I don’t like the ticket price and the two drink minimum. It’s not all ages. You can only do an hour. Usually you don’t get to pick the people who open for you. It’s just shitty.

David Cross asks halfway through our interview. Uh, no. "Be honest. Really?" Actually, no. But I'm beginning to wish I was. I've reached Cross in Madison, Wisconsin, where the comedian and his fellow Atlanteans in alt-rock band Ultra Baby Fat are scheduled to perform. Not exactly a household name, Cross is nevertheless a respected comic whose work on The Ben Stiller Show and HBO's Mr. Show have garnered the bespectacled, balding 35-year-old a small, cultish fan base who like their humour with a sprinkling of Monty Python-ish absurdity. Skits on Mr. Show, which was the brainchild of Cross and Bob Odenkirk (best known as Larry's weasely agent on The Larry Sanders Show), included a feud between East and West Coast mimes, musical parodies such as the 'N Sync-ish duo Three Times One Minus One and a satire of heavy metal band Wycked Sceptre, whose members suddenly realize, after watching video footage of themselves, they're gay. However, ask Cross about a specific sketch, like the aforementioned Wycked Sceptre bit, and this is the response you get, "Wycked Sceptre is a sketch we did on Mr. Show that everyone is well aware of, and I can add nothing of import to what you know already. I've been answering questions about Mr. Show for four years now nonstop. There's nothing I can add now to the information pot."

65. David Brenner
Best comedian Headliner Atlantic City and College comedian of the Year in thesame year. This truly shows the great cross-sectional appeal of david Brenner
http://speakers.com/brenner.html
David Brenner
David Brenner is probably best known for his guest-hosting and his appearances on The Tonight Show, as well as the host of his own show Nightlife. He is currently hosting The David Brenner Show on the Westwood One Entertainment radio network. Brenner entertains his audience five days a week with a variety of guests that range from politicians to comedians. The discussions include many topical issues, but always with a lot of laughs.
Brenner was born and reared in the tough, poor sections of South and West Philadelphia. As a youth, Brenner was a gang leader who used humor as a powerful weapon. In high school, he was elected class president each year and 'class comedian.' He then went to Temple University where he graduated with honors, majoring in mass communication.
Before stepping in front of the camera, Brenner enjoyed a successful career behind the camera as the writer/producer/director of 115 documentary films and headed the distinguished documentary departments of both Westinghouse Broadcasting and Metromedia Broadcasting. Brenner's documentary work earned him a total of nearly thirty industry awards and citations including an Emmy Award for his documentary, OnCall: Dr. Amato.

HBO comic cultivates a sharp edge
March 4, 2002 BY DANTE CHINNI
FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER A few weeks after Sept. 11, David Cross walked out in front of an audience at Northwestern University and asked a simple question. "I said, 'I'm not trying to be funny here, but is it OK to make fun of George Bush yet?' " Cross remembers. "And the place went nuts. Things really weren't any different than they were before." And that was good news for the comedian, because it's hard to imagine him being any different. David Cross with Ultrababyfat
8 p.m. Tuesday The Magic Stick
4120 Woodward, Detroit Comics are often described as having a nothing-sacred repertoire, but Cross lays one of the most legitimate claims. The scathing, eclectic humor he brings to the Magic Stick Tuesday is not just disquieting witness his imitation of a crack baby or irreverent, like the sketch about the disciples hanging out with Jesus because of his ability to make wine on demand. His humor takes aim at all available targets, and often hits several at once with meta-jokes about jokes that aren't funny. Most of Cross' fans got their introduction from the HBO comedy series "Mr. Show," which Cross cowrote and costarred in with friend Bob Odenkirk. Though it lasted only four short seasons the longest of which was only 10 shows the series developed a very devoted small following. The show's extremely offbeat sketch comedy blended live and taped pieces that flowed into one another a la "Monty Python's Flying Circus." There was nothing else remotely like it on television.

The comedian, who was flown in by ASF from New York, pointed fun at ULV's size and close-knit population, using information from the University catalogue to fuel his jokes.

Coming live to the University of La Verne from New York, comedian David J, 26, was sponsored by the Associated Students Federation (ASF) Forum to perform at "Club Davenport" on Thursday, March 12.
David J, who has opened for known comedians such as Adam Sandler, flew into La Verne prior to his performance last Thursday night. Hosted for a price of $2,000, he entertained a crowd of about 200 students who laughed at jokes about La Verne while drinking root beer floats and eating pretzels.
The crowd roared and whistled as "DJ," (David J's preferred nickname) made fun of the "card lady" who allows dorm students to eat inside Davenport.

Since last post: 4 hours Last activity: 3 hours Posted on 27.1.03 1340.32 Uber mentioned this in another thread, but I have to put my two cents in. God DAMN that was a funny CD. I haven't laughed this hard at a (living) comedian in a loooong time. While some of his thoughts weren't really fleshed out (I get that he hates Baptists and rednecks, but give me some more reasons and examples, dammit!), I couldn't believe that he had the balls to spout off some of that stuff. The bit about God and young boys would have incited riots where I'm from. I'm glad that someone isn't *that* cowed by our fundamentalist religious right masters. I'm glad that someone isn't afraid to speak out against fashionable patriotism, our stupidly arrogant president or our Eagle Scout-from-hell Attorney General. Especially since Bill Hicks is dead. A friend of mine said that Cross carries Hicks' anger torch pretty well, and he's right. Best line of the CD: "I don't know, faggot."
