The three previous albums of this very talented musician and composer were self-released by Cross's own small company "Music Galore" LTD., but later on the second and third CDs were pressed by an obscure German prog-label "Inside Out" under license (maybe the first too?). So, up to now David Cross's creation has been unheard-of. But the fourth effort, licensed by a solid independent US label "Cleopatra",is released and distributed over the world for the first time. Some prog-oriented Japanese labels probably publishe Cross's works too. The first song Exiles was originally composed by Cross himself for King Crimson 's "Larks' tongues in aspic" (1973) album. Good thing there are new arrangements of instrumental parts, unlike the original. In his solo career Cross moves into traditional classic symphonic prog (though sometimes extremely heavy), and Exiles-2 is made in this direction, while the younger Cross loved very much avantgarde, psychedelic and even a bit jazzy sound. However, Wetton sings much the same the old version, making all vocal parts very Crimsonesque.

    Top Ten Albums of 1998
While you have probably seen top-ten lists posted on rec.music.progressive and elsewhere this month. The Reels of Dreams Unrolled top-ten list is probably different in that it does not focus on new albums. The truth is that I simply don't buy new albums that much. It is not a conscious effort, it is just that there is still so much old stuff out there that interests me a lot more. So what's the point of the list? Or as Robert Fripp would ask, "What is its aim?" Well, it is three-fold. To alert my readers to some great old albums they may not have yet. (I bet almost everyone reading this will find at least one album here they do not yet have.) To satisfy my own ego in convincing myself people actually care what I think about prog rock. To make some sort of ripple on the often motionless HTML sea that is Reels of Dreams Unrolled. So, without further ado, here are my favorite albums of the year and a few words about each of them:
    Tilt
    Cramps
Four months after receiving it as a gift, I am still listening to this album a couple of times a week! The seamless melding of lyrical, symphonic Italian prog mixed with some furious jazz fusion may very well put this album in my top-ten of all time!

This is fine stuff. David Cross, one time violin player with King Crimson has a band of his own. The Big Picture has elements of classic King Crimson in all their incarnations, from the manic to the mellow, The Big Picture , at times, is King Crimson in all but name...! coming from these parts this must be taken as a massive compliment. There's some fine electric/acoustic violin that sounds like it could fit on a Michael Nyman album. There's some complex wild bits, such as the brilliantly named Grinfixer that touch on areas only explored by Davo or Poisoned Electrick head. Unfortunately there's a couple of tracks that could be Pink Floyd circa The Wall . There's lots of vital twisting, bendy knife edge Prog adventure and some raging wah-ed violin. This album is nowhere near as good as they are live and it still sounds absolutely brilliant. We have it on good authority that there is at least one Cardiacs fanatic in this band...it shows. Classic King Crimson style musical adventure. (The Organ) This one's got Crimson written all over it., ember-red and burning. But let's expose the facts; Cross doesn't wax sentimental and just revive the old Crimson magic.

    Subject: CALAMITY
Hello friends, And welcome back to a next issue of The Official David Cross newsletter. As you already know, this year we are expecting two brand new releases from David Cross. The first one is a new Radius album called “Civilizations”. The album is already recorded and right now it’s passing a mixing phase. Last weekend David was busy selecting from different takes of the recorded material and mixing the album. One of the finished tracks is called “Floating”. There is still no confirmed date of the “Civilizations” release, as soon as I have any information I’ll let you know. David also keeps on working on his 5th, yet unnamed, solo album. The first set of lyrics from Richard Palmer-James is already received and, according to David, they are excellent. What else could we expect from the man who wrote the lyrics for “The Night Watch”? By the way, I hope to prepare an interview with Richard for the next Calamity issue, so stay tuned... At last I have some information about a line-up for David’s forthcoming album to share. Here are some words from Mr.Cross himself: “On DC5 I will be recording with Mick Paul (bass), Paul Clark (guitar) and a drummer as yet to be decided. I hope that Pete McPhail will play some soprano sax and I am now looking for a singer.”
(Just wanted to remind you that Pete McPhail is a composer/flute/sax player who is well known in England as an improviser. David worked on some projects with him when he was in his 'jazz' phase. They had a trio with Sheila Maloney called Beckett Music, which interpreted the plays of Samuel Beckett as music. He played on some tracks on “Memos from Purgatory”, “The Big Picture” and “Exiles”.) Probably, the new album will feature a guest appearance from Robert Fripp.

Through Different Eyes Listed Bands : David Cross : Exiles
EXILES This is the new album by King Crimson violinist David Cross. The album featuring many great legendary guest musicians such as Robert Fripp, Peter Hammill, Pete Sinfield and John Wetton. With that line-up you can't complain. All of them are among the best on their instrument. My favourite tracks on the album are "Exiles" (a new version of that classic King Crimson song), "Fast", "Tonk" and "Troppo". "Fast" is a superb instrumental song where the violin is duelling with the guitar. David Cross is a magnificent violin player and composer and he is giving the music that extra taste of something special. Many of the tracks are breathing King Crimson, which isn't that surprising with so many King Crimson members participating. Everybody knows what a good guitar player Robert Fripp are, but here you also got one hell of a guitar player in Paul Clark. He's got a very wild approach to his guitar and makes the music sparkling with life. This album is as good as many of the King Crimson albums. A must have for any fan of King Crimson, and a very good buy for all other true progressive rock fans out there. Recommended.

David Cross' Noisy Records has two newer releases featuring the ex-Crimson violinist.
The latest release from the band Radius, ambient and improvisational, it features Cross on violin and Geoff Serle on keys.
"The Big Picture" is Cross' first release on his new label Noisy Records label. "The Big Picture" was originally released on Red Hot Records, this release contains one bonus track. Best described as a mixture of 70s era Crimson and Pink Floyd, it should please King Crimson fans or any fans of Progressive Music.
