Over the last three weeks we reviewed some of the many musical highlights of 1973. All in all, 1973 was a very special year in which many bands achieved their definite breakthrough and others reached their top. The year after, 1974, was a bit different. Although some bands continued to deliver their best albums, some cracks in the scenery of progressive rock became visible. Some bands explored their musical boundaries even beyond imagination, others lost one or more important band-members. 1974 saw Rick Wakeman leaving Yes, Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis and King Crimson coming to an end. The latter band, King Crimson, delivered one of their finest works, Red, just before falling apart. After 5 years of experimental music, from their stunning debut in 1969, onwards along several line-up changes, King Crimson died a sudden death. The pivotal father-figure of the band, guitarist Robert Fripp decided to call it a day. A lot happened prior to this decision. At the end of 1972 Yes-drummer Bill Bruford was asked to join a new version of King Crimson, after the first line-up had lost its spirit. In two years time the new Crimson quintet developed very rapidly, as a result of which three albums were made, many concerts were played and two members, percussionist Jamie Muir and violinist David Cross left the group. Although Cross had a part in the creation of Red, the album was officially released by the trio Fripp/Bruford/Wetton, as the album-cover shows.

Some of these are available through Electronic Music Foundation's CDeMUSIC KONTAKTE David Tudor, piano and percussion, and Christoph Caskel, percussion, playing Karlheinz Stockhausen's 'Kontakte'. A historically important performance.

INDETERMINACY John Cage himself reads his stories at the rate of one per minute while David Tudor simultaneously and asynchronously performs the piano solo from the 'Concert for Piano and Orchestra' (1958). Tudor's great and Cage's stories are funny, touching, and intelligent. If you don't have this 2-CD set, you're missing an important part of life.

MUSIC FOR MERCE CUNNINGHAM Here's an important moment in the early history of electronic performance: John Cage's 'Cartridge Music' (1960), for phonograph cartridges and amplified small objects, played by David Tudor, Michael Pugliese, and Takehisa Kosugi. This performance is gentle yet somehow "crunchy." Also 'Five Stone Wind' (1988) with Tudor, Pugliese and Kosugi playing amplified violin, bamboo flute, live electronics, tapes, and clay pots.

    http://www.dws.ndirect.co.uk/duchess.htm
    The Duchess's Tune
(A Burlesque) The Duchess was one of the most beautiful boys in the University, with his flowing chestnut hair and his thin-lipped lascivious smile. He was called "the Duchess" because, though very camp, he did not have quite the regal regard of a regular royal queen, and also because one of his old boyfriends was a real duke, if you believe the stories they tell in the city's student pubs. This duke had presented him with an antique grand piano as a parting gift, before leaving our shores forever, under a purple haze, and disappearing somewhere in the region of Tibet, where he was last heard intoning with the best of the bassi profundi in a monastery there. This piano, then, crowded out the Duchess's less than spacious college room, but he could not bear to part with it: more because of its sentimental value than its musical beauty. He spent many an essay-weary hour tinkling aimlessly over its dusty keys, trying to think of something outrageous to write about Flaubert or Pirandello. One evening, however, his tinkling bore strange fruit: a short seven bar melody struck him as unusually attractive, in an angular, irregular way, and he played it over and over again before rushing to get a piece of paper and writing it down. He tried to harmonize it, but no harmony seemed to satisfy it. It swallowed up every attempt and begged for more, just as obsessive and dissatisfied as the Duchess himself... Nothing could complement either him or his tune and he found himself playing it louder and louder each evening throughout the term, getting more and more frustrated, despite complaints from the neighbours. Rumours of his eccentricity spread through the college until they reached the ears of a young blond violinist, who went to see this madman in his ivory-keyed tower, taking his violin with him.

In general, if you're interested in conversation (a definite plus) not just action then interests in current affairs, classical music, film and wine would be better starting points than football/sport, chart music, pop culture and lager. Increasingly it needed improvisation to stay alive: this was its life blood. But that didn't show much in the studio albums. In concert, it stepped sideways and jumped. It went places where other musicians of that rock generation mainly avoided. This team looked into the darker spaces of the psyche and reported back on what it found. The 1969 Crimscapes were bleak and written; the 1973/4 Crimscapes were darker, and mainly improvised.

The songs for the ceremony were well timed and executed and the music chosen was perfect all night long. The use of the microphone was very helpful during the speeches (and my singing !) and the lighting was perfect for the occassion. As further testament we have had nothng but positive feedback from our guests as to the evening and this is in no small part to the music provided, top class. Thank you for the service, and please feel free to use my comments for any advertising etc as you require. Thanks again, Mark and Trish

www.holycrossband.com Shred: Production: Vibe: Songwriting: Holy Cross is by their own definition a "Christian Prog-Rock Band" which intrigued me when I first read about them on a Kansas (the band) newsgroup, I was also intrigued by their collaboration with former Kansas violinist David Ragsdale, an amazing musician. When I finally listened to Small World ~ Big God , Holy Cross' latest release, I immediately heard the potential this music has. The opener "Glory" features some serious jammin' and a Kansas-like vibe led by Ragsdale's rippin' violin. Other highlights include the melodic "Prelusion Escape" and the dark, Alice In Chains sounding "Even Angels Fall." Main songwriter and keyboardist Bert Chancellor shows flashes of greatness as his songs have a great sense of melody. Musically, the band is tight and rockin', and even though I wouldn't call them flat out shred, these guys can play their instruments. The vocals, on the other hand, need some work as they sometimes come off a bit flat and off-key. That being said, I attest some of the vocal woes to the recording process that many indie bands have to endure, which consists of extremely limited studio time, lack of a producer and having to record, produce, and mix the music themselves and in a hurry. Don't let this steer you away from the band, though, as they do have definite potential.
