Constructing the Past and the Future: How Children Understand Time
For more than 25 years, Professor of Psychology William Friedman has been studying how people experience timeparticularly how children develop their concept of time. In this essay, which based on his chapter in a forthcoming issue of the journal Advances in Child Development and Behavior, Friedman explores how children come to understand the past and the future.

64. King Crimson - "The Talking Drums"
grouping of exYes Drummer Bill Bruford, Free Jazz Percussionist Jaime Muir,ex-Family Bassist John Wetton, and ex-Fat Grapple violinist david cross.

King Crimson - "The Talking Drums" (Recorded Live at Zoom Club, Frankfurt Germany 10/13/72, Double Bootleg CD, Unknown Origin, Purchased in Philadelphia July 2001) From Aural Innovations #18 (January 2002) Yes, this is the real stuff for me, my favorite version of KC in full-flight, first show of the first tour of the mid-seventies era of Fripp's music, and one of the most important Progressive Rock bootlegs offered to the interested music fan or student of the genre. THIS IS A BOOTLEG, so the sound quality is slightly noisy, but gets better as the show progresses. It sounds like it was mastered from cassette, but the source seems to have come from the soundboard Reel to Reel tape. And it was fuckin' expensive at $25.00 per disc, yet cheaper in Philadelphia than NYC. The set opens with Jaime Muir's percussive styling on Bells introducing "Lark's Tongues In Aspic Part 1", which unfolds its unlikely combination of 70s Miles Funk, Olivier Messiaen and Indonesian Gamelan at breakneck speed and with great precision. The tune works through a number of motifs, featuring the chattering interplay of these two stellar percussionists. After Fripp's introduction to the audience, a very free Jam occurs, with a huge BassGuitar sound from Wetton, an extremely intense solo from Fripp and fire from Cross' violin. The exchanges between Bruford and Muir are quite amazing as they work the jam by providing a multi-hued rhythmic barrage. After the fire, the jam segues into an early version of "Book of Saturdays", which is sung beautifully by Wetton, and gives Fripp a chance to play a heart-breaking solo. This version of the tune sports un-revised lyrics by David Palmer-James, but progresses right into yet another improvisation. Throughout the ensemble plays with great sensitivity, and maintains a very high degree of interaction.

A comic at Southgate House? Here's why ... David Cross
DAVID CROSS
probably clears up any confusion. Cross appearing at the Southgate this Sunday is half (along with partner Bob Odenkirk) of the boisterously entertaining, indescribable Mr. Show , the HBO program that ranks with Monty Python and Kids In the Hall as one of the best sketch comedy shows of all time. Cross who has also appeared on network shows like Just Shoot Me and News Radio and Odenkirk have completed a full-length film, Run Ronnie Run , an extension of a Mr. Show sketch about Ronnie Dobbs, a trailer-trash rapscallion who becomes a superstar based on his numerous arrests on the TV show Cops (the film is completed but the release has been long delayed by New Line Cinemas). If there was such a thing as "Indie Rock comedy," Cross would be its godfather. He performed and MC'd the New Year's Eve concert by Guided By Voices and The Strokes at New York City's Apollo Theatre, and he's an admitted fan of the genre. For his current tour, Cross has even teamed up with Atlanta's all-female quartet ULTRABABYFAT , who are currently promoting their sassy new CD Eight Balls in Reverse . Secrets of Love by Don Walters.
When asked why he created the new album, Secrets of Love, Walters states, "Love allows you to experience the heights to which the human heart can soar. Love is one of the wonders of the universe." J "This is our vision of Brazil and the other Latin America countries. It's a great place to be inspired by because you can feel the romance and passion in the air there. But since we're not authentic Brazilian artists, the music is going to be influenced by our musical backgrounds which include everything from pop, rock and country to classical, jazz and new age. I believe these Worldbeat albums truly reflect where music is headed because I look at world music as everything from everywhere combined. World music today is a melting pot of all styles. The world stage is completely cross-cultural these days."
Ancestral Crossing by Scott Hartley.

Mai by Eri Sugai -
The title, Mai, means "dance" in Japanese, and on this recording Eri's voice dances across the tracks like a whirling nymph one moment, an angelic choir the next and then a playful Tinkerbell. Her voice is purposely used as an instrument, and,* in most songs, as an ensemble of instruments. This style of singing has been popularized in recent years by Enya (singing in Gaelic), Sheila Chandra (English and wordless vocals influenced by her roots in Great Britain and India) Orchid by Shao Rong - The shimmering sounds of the ancient pipa performing these haunting melodies, backed by a myriad of eastern and western instruments, creates a vibrant, dramatic and mesmerizing new musical sound appealing to audiences around the world.

Shem interview, August 12th, 2001 By Kenneth Bremer.
All these words are from independent people at the webstore cdbaby.com. There is no doubt that Shem has done a terrific album. After touring with a lot of west coast music artists, Shem did get the time to record and release his first album "Son of Arthur. Here is an interview with Shem, where he is telling about the new album and more. - First of all congratulations on the release of your new album. Is the title "Son of Arthur" related to your father Artie Schroeck? Thank you. Yes. I called it that because of two things. First, I am a son of Arthur and my father has been a huge musical influence on my life. Secondly, I don't use a last name so seeing as my name is one from the Old Testament, I thought I'd identify myself like they did back then. For example: Solomon, son of David. - "Son of Arthur" is a very clever album. In my opinion it is an album that shows your talents as a musician and songwriter. It took a lot of years to be released. Was it because of all your touring with different bands or were the songs a long way to come? Yes I have been busy touring but that wasn't the reason for the long wait. When I spoke to you guys in Paris back in 1997, I had mentioned that I planned on recording a CD soon. But at that time I hadn't felt comfortable with material and an over all motif for a record. With the birth of now playing acoustic guitar, which was something I hadn't really tackled yet when I saw you last, I started writing the songs you now hear on "Son Of Arthur." The only song that had been written back in '97 was "Born To Take the Fall" and it was very piano oriented at the time. The over all recording process started in July of 1999 and was completed in April of this year. So while you guys thought I took forever to record this record, it really was only about a 2 year process.

Review
Similar [to An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise ] but by no means the same is A Spell for Green Corn: the MacDonald Dances for violin and orchestra. Faithful to the precept that no plough should touch a field until a fiddle has passed over the furrows, the violinist imparts a blessing, furrow by furrow, with his tunes. This seemingly simple music conjures up a magic which probably only those who know the Orkneys can fully comprehend. And yet it is neither a question of colour nor of patriotism but of music rooted in the nature and in the people of the Orkneys. For me, with its easily grasped tunes and grand, even anthem-like architecture, it is one of the loveliest, most satisfying violin concertos of the twentieth century at the very least.
