The following tributes to Jill Dando from friends, colleagues and members of the public were published in a booklet released at her memorial service.
The tributes that followed Jill's tragic death have come from all over the world, from all corners of society and from all age groups. They are unanimous in their appreciation of her unassuming, compassionate, bubbly personality and exceptional professional ability. She was universally loved. This booklet consists of positive memories specifically recorded by a number of Jill's colleagues and friends, together with a few of the thoughts contributed by many thousands of people who expressed their feelings through the BBC website. Our love and devotion to each other are never hidden but cannot be expressed in words. I am privileged to have my life so touched by hers. Through her beauty, eloquence, modesty and charm one characteristic remains the strongest: she was fun. Jill earned every moment of happiness she ever experienced and deserved many, many more. I owe her.
Alan Farthing A wonderful personality who became a very welcome regular guest into our living rooms, will be sorely missed for her presentation style, warmth, enthusiasm, verve and humour.

In memoriam: Jill Dando, 1961-99 (part 2)
The following tributes to Jill Dando from friends, colleagues and members of the public were published in a booklet released at her memorial service.
As I write this I am looking at a photograph I had taken with Jill to celebrate 30 years of BBC local radio. We had both begun our BBC careers there. They had found an old Triumph Herald car by which we were pictured. It was such a joyful occasion. It always was with Jill. The most indefinable quality for a television performer is likeability. Jill had loveability. She was extraordinarily gifted in the art of communication through the small screen, making the whole business look simple. Much more than that though, she was a wonderful human being.
Desmond Lynam The last time Jill and I met was in early spring at a restaurant in Glasgow, where, as so many times before, we zipped through several months of gossip in record time. There was a bit about career moves and mutual friends, but mostly I recall being apologetically bombarded with the all-round wonderful qualities of the fiancé I had yet to meet. Her enthusiasm was irresistible. Her joy was infectious. That memory of Jill, brimming with happiness and fulfilment, will remain as dear to me as her friendship was.

Sir John Birt's tribute to Jill Dando

Sir John Birt: Jill Dando was "adored by everyone she worked with"
Sir John Birt, Director-General of the BBC, gave this special address at Jill Dando's memorial service on Tuesday 28 September 1999. Jill was a West Country girl. She was born and brought up there; and that's where she spent her early working years. She was reluctant to leave the West Country for London; but when she did she would never forget her roots. She would always stay close to her West Country friends and to her family - her brother and her Dad - and she would never stop grieving the loss of her mother. Jill was Head Girl at school, and worked as a reporter in the West Country - on newspapers, then radio and television. She was proud to be a journalist, and would forever regard it as the bedrock of her career. 'She made difficult things look easy' When Jill joined the BBC, she enjoyed immediate and striking success. In rapid progression she presented Breakfast Time; the Six O'Clock News; Holiday; and Crimewatch. Jill was unusually versatile and never out-of-place - whether in a holiday camp or in a newsroom. Jill became a professional of great accomplishment. She made difficult things look easy: talking whilst making a tricky traverse across a studio floor; presenting whilst waterskiing; or doing a long link to camera for the Holiday programme whilst roller-blading at speed.

"I'm sure I speak for the whole of the House when I say our deepest sympathy goes to her family and friends at the time of this terrible, tragic and appalling loss."

The Mirror's
headline "So sad" reflects the sentiments expressed for Jill Dando in the coverage of her funeral in the UK's morning newspapers. Sleep well Jill says The Sun while The Daily Telegraph says: "Jill Dando mourned by her wedding guests - 150 friends and relatives had been invited." Many of their names were apparently taken from a list of people Miss Dando had intended inviting to her wedding which was discovered in her Filofax. Several papers comment on the weather in Weston-super-Mare for the funeral. "Under cold, grey skies the world says goodbye to sunshine girl" says The Express , adding: "It wasn't really a day to come home." The Daily Telegraph reports an attack on the government over genetically modified foods by one of its own advisers. The newspaper says Lady Young, the Chairman of English Nature, has criticised the plan for a voluntary code on the growing of GM crops. Final attempt The paper quotes her saying: "Farmers could follow the code to the letter, but using these new crops could still remove all wildlife using the fields."

Crimewatch tribute to Jill Dando

Crimewatch will also reconstruct Ms Dando's last movements
Crime victims are to pay a "people's tribute" to murdered BBC presenter Jill Dando on Tuesday's edition of Crimewatch, the show which she presented with Nick Ross. Victims will tell how the programme helped to catch the criminals, and detectives will talk about their work with the 37-year-old anchorwoman. The show will also open without its normal titles and music, and will begin with a reconstruction of Ms Dando's murder last month. Police are still hunting the killer However, BBC bosses said that beyond that, the edition will stick to the usual Crimewatch format, with appeals for help over three other crimes. A corporation spokesman said: "Many high-profile tributes have been rightly paid to Jill but she believed passionately in the public service performed by Crimewatch and she greatly valued her work on it. "It seemed right, therefore, that ordinary people who have been helped by Crimewatch and who contacted us to say that they would like to make a tribute to her should be able to do so."

Your tributes to Jill Dando

With all the violence in the world, it is easy to become de-sensitised. I thought I was - until today. A sad day for us all.
Lorraine, Yorkshire, UK You can break or you can shatter a vase in which roses have once been distilled, but the scent of the roses will last forever. (Sir Thomas More, 1478-1535) John Fox, England My sincerest sympathies and regrets go out to all her friends and family. Let's hope whoever did it gets caught for her sake, and the safety of the rest of the Fulham residents. No doubt she will be watching over us all. She brightened all our days. E.M. Williams, Fulham, London, UK I am devastated by this news. I have met Jill briefly three times over as many years at awards ceremonies. Beautiful, intelligent but above all else sincere she was totally unaffected by the trappings of her fame. She was for me a perfect woman and so in control of her life. I was devastated by this meaningless waste of such a wonderful person who talked with me and my wife like friends even though she had never met us before. Her life ahead was so full of promise and I was happy for her that at last she seemed to be settling down to the joys of marriage and a normal life. My heart goes out to her family and friends. Mystery man traced in Dando murder hunt

Jill Dando was shot on her doorstep in Gowan Avenue, Fulham
A mystery blond man seen near BBC presenter Jill Dando's home less than hour before her murder has been traced by the police and ruled out of the inquiry. The gas meter reader was tracked down nearly five months after the murder on 26 April, a Scotland Yard spokesman said. The inquiry team are trying to discover if the television presenter was the victim of an obsessive fan, or a contract killing. They said they need to trace other men seen in the area in the minutes before the murder to find out how many people were involved. The meter reader, who has not been named, confirmed to police that he had been in Gowan Avenue on the morning of the murder but felt he had no information to offer so did not come forward. Police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward The development was not viewed as a "great breakthrough" but cleared up the mystery of the man whose description did not match any others seen before the killing. He had been spotted by a window cleaner who was working opposite Ms Dando's home, about 45 minutes before she was murdered on her doorstep.
