John Wynn Davidson, army officer and Indian fighter, the eldest of the four sons of William B. and Elizabeth Davidson, was born on August 14, 1825, in Fairfax County, Virginia. Davidson graduated from West Point in 1845 and saw frontier duty in Kansas and Wisconsin. During the Mexican War he was stationed in California and participated in the battles of San Pasqual and the San Gabriel. On June 18, 1851, he married Clara McGunnegle in St. Louis, Missouri. During the Civil War Davidson, served as a brigadier general in General McClellan 's Army of the Potomac. He fought in the Peninsular Campaign and the Seven Days battles and throughout the rest of the war served in the Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi districts. In 1866 Davidson was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the Tenth United States Cavalry . Since the regiment consisted of black buffalo soldiers , he soon acquired the nickname "Black Jack." With the outbreak of the Red River War , Davidson, on September 10, 1874, led six companies of the Tenth Cavalry, three of the Eleventh Infantry, a section of mountain howitzers, Lt. Richard H. Pratt's Indian scouts, and forty-six supply wagons out of Fort Sill into the Texas

DAVIDSON , John H., real estate and insurance agent, Harrisburg, is a native of Dauphin county, Pa. He was born in the city of Harrisburg July 5, 1870. He is a son of William W. and Susan E. (Zimmerman) Davidson, the former a native of Schuylkill county, the latter of Halifax township, Dauphin county. His father was a tanner by trade, and during his residence in Schuylkill county followed this occupation, together with farming. The parents removed to Harrisburg about 1860. The father was engaged in various occupations for a few years. For the past thirty years he has been in the employment of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. The parents had born to them three children, all of whom are living, namely: Frank E., residing at White Bear Lake, Minn., Clara May, wife of Charles E. Shaffer, residing one mile northeast of Dauphin, Dauphin county, along Stony creek, and John H. John H. Davidson was educated in the public schools of his native city. For a period of about seven years after leaving school he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as messenger and clerk. On April 1, 1895, he engaged in his present business, and has met with an encourageing degree of success. He is a member of Cincinnatus Commandery, No. 96, K. of M.; Paxtang Conclave, No. 131, I. O. of H. In political views he is a republican. He is a consistent member of Augsburg Lutheran church. John Wynn Davidson
He led a cavalry division from June till September commanded in the actions at Brownsville, Bayou Metre, and Ashley's Mills, Ark., and took part in the capture of Little Rock. He was made chief of cavalry of the military division west of the Mississippi on 26 June 1864, and on 24 November led a cavalry expedition from Baton Rouge to Pas-cagoula. He was brevetted brigadier-general in the regular army on 13 March 1865, for the capture of Little Rock, and major general for his services during the war. He was made lieutenant colonel of the 10th cavalry on 1 December 1866, was acting inspector-general of the Department of the Missouri from November 1866, till December 1867, and professor of military science in Kansas agricultural College from 1868 till 1871. He then commanded various posts in Idaho and Texas, and, in 1877-'8, the district of Upper Brazos, Tex. On 20 March 1879, he was made colonel of the 2d cavalry.

    Davidson, John 1857-1909, Scottish poet. After teaching in Scotland he went to London. There, struggling with poverty and illness, he wrote Fleet Street Eclogues (1893; Ser. 2, 1896), Ballads and Songs New Ballads (1897), literary dramas, and novels. He established a small reputation as a lyric poet, but he earned little money. Despairing, he drowned himself in the ocean near Penzance in 1909.
