The actress Marion Davies was born as Marion Cecelia Douras in Brooklyn, New York. Her long-standing relationship with media mogul William Randolph Hearst, who supported her career intensive, covered the talent of this bewitching comedienne. Her life with Hearst was the basis of the fictitious realisation of Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" - however the part of Susan Alexander had nothing to do with the real Marion Davies. Marion Davies began her career in the show business as a member of the Ziegfeld Follies. When she made her film debut with "Runaway, Romany" (17), she also wrote the script for it.
Already in her first movie she found that role which suited her well - the one of a comedienne. Briefly afterwards she met William Randolph Hearst who was fascinated of her. He founded the Cosmopolitan pictures to produce movies specifically for Marion Davies. In the next years he invested enormous amounts of money for the movies and the publicity, but the movies didn't bring in the money again.
But Marion Davies convinced the audience with her screen presence in movies like "The Belle of New York" (19), "The Restless Sex" (20), "Enchantment" (21), "When Knighthood Was in Flower" (22) and "Little Old New York" (23).

WHEN MARKET STREET WAS THE CITY'S MOVIE ROW For those of you who are unfamiliar with San Francisco, Market Street is the city's main street. It starts at the Ferry Building, and runs for three and one-half miles in a southeasterly direction to the base of Twin Peaks. It has been the street that defined the term "Downtown" for San Franciscans since its founding. Market Street has lost much of it's glitter over the years, and it can be argued that the blame falls mainly on the invention of television. Before TV arrived on the scene, Market Street was lined with movie theaters that attracted movie goers from all over the Bay Area. Between Fourth Street and Tenth Street, nearly two dozen theater marques lit up the night sky with thousands of flashing neon lights. The crowds that gathered nightly on Market Street also enjoyed a large number and variety of restaurants along with a clean and safe environment.

(1897-1961) is mostly remembered as the mistress of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, whose love for the former chorus girl and Ziegfeld beauty knew no bounds and who lavished millions to make her a movie star, a perception that's been almost irretrievably distorted by the character of Susan Alexander - loosely based on Davies - in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane . But, as Welles pointed out years later, there were few real similarities between Alexander and Davies. If both were mistresses of publishing magnates (Hearst's wife wouldn't give him a divorce), Hearst and Davies were a devoted couple who remained together till his death, with Davies dipping into her own fortune when he hit financial storms. Far from being a failed opera singer ( that was based on the paramour of an altogether different tycoon), Davies, admittedly backed by the full power of the Hearst pressand empire (even she thought it was overkill), maintained her stardom for over three decades, garnering box office success, her own following, and raves from non-Hearst critics. Off-screen colleagues were unanimous that she was, in the words of Hearst biographer W.A. Swanberg, "a warm and winning personality - fun-loving, joyous, wildly sentimental and generous." (No one ever complained after a weekend at the Hearst/Davies pleasure palace San Simeon.) Twenty-five years after

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle and friend, Howard M. Davies, age 75, passed away Friday, May 31, 2002 due to congestive heart failure.
He was born September 21, 1926 in Lake Point, Utah, where he lived his entire life.
Howard leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Clarine Gunderson Davies and eight children: Karen Davies, Kent (Susan) Davies, Paul (Diane) Davies, LaRae (Milan) Christley, Richard (Wendy) Davies, Diane (Steve) Young, Bryan (Cherelle) Davies, David (Kathy) Davies, 43 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind seven brothers and sisters, Farrel (Gloria) Davies, Gilbert (Jean) Davies, Keith (Pat) Davies, Thelma (Ken) Gollaher, Darlene (Max) Welcker, Janet (Walter) Parker, and Jerry (Linda) Davies.
Howard is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions, including two terms as bishop of the Lake Point Ward. He loved the ward members and enjoyed playing volleyball and camping with them.
Howard loved his family, community members, the gospel, and farming. He retired in 1985 from Kennecott Copper Corporation after 40 years of service. He lived to see many technological advancements during his life and always spoke of his gratitude to be alive in this marvelous dispensation of time.

BARBARA STANWYCK paid Show-Biz dues, high kicking, and taking bit parts in roadshows. She was a Ziegfeld Follies Girl in 1922, the 5'3", 115 pound chorus girl doing a striptease on stage behind a white screen, and gaining a reputation as a trooper, but not working as an actress.
SOPHIE TUCKER did a stint with the Ziegfeld Follies, Sophie began headlining her own shows. Before long, she was The Red Hot Mama. Like Mae West, her humor was aggressively sexual. But unlike Mae, Sophie was considered unattractive. Audiences laughed at Sophie rather than with her and she capitalized on it. Not surprisingly, then, she'd been dismissed as playing up a stereotype - the fat old woman who foolishly fancies herself sexy.
MARION DAVIES made her Broadway debut at age sixteen in a chorus line. She danced in review and musicals and also modeled. Her only Ziegfeld shows were the 1916 Follies and Miss 1917. Later in 1917 she made her screen debut. Davies met newspaper publisher and heir William Randolph Hearst while she was in the Follies.
BERT SAVOY and Joe Brennan appeared in 48 performances of Miss 1917. Bert was outrageously effeminate both onstage and off. He referred to men as "she" and camped it up at every opportunity. His drag persona was a hip-swaying gossip who dished about herself and the sordid exploits of her friend "Margie" while the dapper Jay Brennan (himself a former female impersonator) listened. Mae West borrowed her famous hip-swaying walk from Savoy, and a few impersonators copied his act so thoroughly that Savoy had to take legal action to protect his routines.

MARION THE CHATELAINE
Marion Davies
Marion Davies was born Marion Cecilia Douras in Brooklyn, NY in 1897. Davies met William Randolph Hearst while she was in the Zeigfeld Follies . She became his mistress and remained so until his death in 1951. Hearst attempted to make her a star, but unfortunately insisted on serious roles when her talent lay in comedy. Hearst's production company, Cosmopolitan, was founded primarily for Davies' films, and it eventually was absorbed by MGM At MGM, Davies became a vehicle for Louis Mayer's search for power. He treated her well, lavishing money and attention on her, even giving her a private bungalow on the lot. These rewards exceeded her worth as an actress, but not the value of the MGM publicity in the Hearst papers. Davies moved to Warner's when she didn't get to play Elizabeth Barrett Browning , but retired from films shortly thereafter. Heart was offended by the portrayal of Davies in Citizen Kane (although Davies herself did not seem to mind). Hearst publications boycotted the movie, and it received little of the publicity it would have otherwise received. Davies stood beside Hearst as his finances and health began to fail, offering all the gifts he had given her for his support. It is accepted that they both had deep feelings for each other. She was shunned by his family, however, and was not allowed to attend his funeral.
