    Davis, Bette
(1908-1989), actor Born on April 5, 1908, in Lowell, Massachusetts, Ruth Elizabeth Davis was known from an early age as Bette. After graduating from Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, in 1925, she studied at the John Murray Anderson Dramatic School in New York City. She made her earliest appearances in 1926 in small parts with stock companies. A brief stint with the Provincetown Players led to her Broadway debut in Broken Dishes in November 1929. A subsequent Broadway role in Solid South won her a film contract. She went to Hollywood in 1931, playing in minor roles until her characterization of Mildred, the cockney waitress in Of Human Bondage (1934), established her reputation as an important actress. In 1935 she won an Academy Award for her powerful portrayal of the aging alcoholic star in Dangerous (1935). Her other notable films of the 1930s were The Petrified Forest Jezebel (1938), for which she won her second Academy Award; Dark Victory (1939); and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex Often plagued by mediocre scripts, over which she fought some spectacular legal battles with Warner Brothers studio, Davis nonetheless turned in performances of the highest caliber, demonstrating endless versatility in such films as
