DAVIS, WILLIAM LEONARD (?-?). W. L. Davis, black newspaper editor and Houston civic leader, edited the Western Star newspaper until its demise in 1914. In August of that year Davis was elected president of the Teachers State Association of Texas. qv He later served as a trustee of Butler College, secretary of the State Sunday School Convention, vice president of the National Baptist Sunday School Congress, and superintendent of the Sunday school at Antioch Baptist Church. In 1918 he was secretary of the executive board of the Negro Division of the Federal Food Administration, and in 1920 he ran unsuccessfully for the state Senate. Davis was a coplaintiff with Charles N. Love, qv editor of the Texas Freeman , and others in filing for an injunction to test the validity of the white primary qv at Houston in 1921. Love and Davis retained R. D. Evans of Waco to handle the case, which eventually was decided in the United States Supreme Court against the plaintiffs. Minutes of Agriculture and language issues in eighteenth-century agricultural and science writing William Marshall’s Minutes of Agriculture and eighteenth-century agricultural writing by Angela Davis Abstract: The eighteenth century was a time of improvement, and this did not fail to extend as far as the field of agriculture. Science in this time was fashionable, and agricultural writers attempted to put forth improvements on the methods of farming as well as the methods of writing about farming. Because there was no distinction between scientific writing and literature in eighteenth century England, problems arose surrounding agricultural texts. Factors include debates about scientific language, readership, and the form an agricultural text should take. These issues are contextualized with background history of the changes in scientific writing and readership, as well as an outline of the agricultural revolution that generated an onslaught of agricultural texts in the eighteenth century. Much of the data is taken from agricultural books and criticisms thereof, with specific excerpts used to illustrate the points. One main text, William Marshall’s Minutes of Agriculture , is used to focus the discussion.

William Davis (1730/40) and Frances Carpenter of Surry, Ashe, Burke, Yancey, Mitchell and Avery Co, NC
Commentary Children Researcher List Register Report ... Home I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of William Davis and Frances Carpenter. Special thanks are owed to many researchers for data shared on this family. First to Orville Wright Davis who wrote "The Davis Family Record". Next to Evelyn Rice Tharp and several of my cousins who have shared data with me over the years on various parts of this family, including Joy Locke, Winona Picarski and many others. William Davis was born ca 1730/1740, probably in Virginia. I think he was born ca 1733. Family legends have William dying at age 127 or 117 or a number of other advanced ages. His death date of 1841 is well established, but his birth date is far from established. However, despite family legends, we have some solid evidence from the 1790 through 1840 census records. The two most meaningful records are the 1830 and 1840 census. In 1830, William Davis was listed in the 90-99 column, or born ca 1730/1740. In 1840 he was in the "over 100" column, or born before 1740. This narrows his birth down to the 1730/1740 timeframe with good evidence. "Uncle Jake" Carpenter (
