I would like to poll the opinions of the GEOMORPH community. What is the current feeling about the model of landscape evolution proposed by William Morris Davis in the early part of this century (landscapes classified as being youthful, mature, or old age)? I have talked to some who no longer accept it, and would like to know how the list members feel.
Second question: If we no longer accept it, what has taken its place? Thank you, Paul R. Larson William Morris Davis (1850-1934)
William M. Davis, famous American geographer, geologist and meteorologist, began his career in geography at age twenty, serving as a meteorlogist in Argentina. He held his first major teaching position at Harvard University from 1876 until 1912. He founded the science of geomorphology, the study of landforms. His major contribution to geography, though, came in the form of his Davisian system of landscape analysis, which involved recognizing the long-term, cyclical nature of erosion in landforms and landscape analysis. In 1904 he helped found the Association of American Geographers. By the time of his death, he had published over more than 500 works.

© 1998-2000 Researched and written by Scott Brown , Great x 4 Grandson of William Dav is On 26 October 1786 William Davis, a 23 year old from Kilburnie, Kirkcudbright Scotland, was brought before the Second Middlesex Jury. He was charged with highway robbery in the company of William Rayner. The robbery was committed at Islington, along the city road where Davis and Rayner held a couple at bay. The victims wife ran away screaming and the men rifled their victims pockets and got away with a metal watch and two pence. Davis and Rayner shared a room in Vine Street, near St Martin's in the Field church and a broken case knife and pistol shaped stick were found when the rooms were searched. The two men, who were under surveillance by constables, were arrested when they tried to pawn a watch, and committed to the new prison at Clerkenwell. Both men were sentenced to death on 26 October 1786, with a recommendation for mercy. Scarborough The conditions aboard these ships were gloomy, dank and unsanitary, with diseases such as scurvy and dysentery running unchecked. Starvation, abuse and neglect, however, were to take the heaviest toll of the prisoners chained below decks. Due to a reported mutiny attempt the convicts on the

I am just getting started with cygwin, so I don't know the specifics of inetutils, so I provided some vanilla Unix answers: 1) your home directory is whatever is in /etc/passwd 2) you can try to change HOME, but it doesn't work on some shells and even if it did, where is the code that would do it? Peter Buckley [ mailto:peter.buckley@cportcorp.com mailto:peter.buckley@cportcorp.com ] writes: But my problem is the same- I have inetutils -14 inetd installed as a service (inetd install-as-service), and when I try to rsh my_machine 'who' (or any other command) it gives me this error "No remote directory." In the rshd man page, it says this error is caused by the chdir command to the home directory failing. I get the same error from a Solaris machine or an NT machine with cygwin. This message you quote means that permissions in /etc/hosts.equiv are not denying you access and may or may not be allowing it. You cannot get to .rhosts to allow access because it is in the home directory. Peter Buckley [ mailto:peter.buckley@cportcorp.com

    WILLIAM HEATH DAVIS HOUSE
The 151 year old William Heath Davis House
    is the oldest wooden structure
    in downtown San Diego.
The William Heath Davis Historic House Museum is the Gaslamp Quarter's oldest surviving structure, a saltbox style home shipped around Cape Horn and assembled in San Diego in 1850. The museum has been home to many fascinating people, including pre-civil war soldiers, a German Spy and Alonzo Horton, founder of San Diego. Each room represents a historic period of the home and is filled with fascinating and amusing stories about the former inhabitants. In addition, the Foundation offers a Gaslamp Guided Walking Tour every Saturday at 11am. Led by a trained guide, the tour vividly recreates the late 1800's when the city near the waterfront fell into disrepair and the “Stingaree” district flourished. Guests learn about the marketing secrets of the naughty ladies of the Stingaree and discover the haunts of famous former resident, Wyatt Earp. The tour also highlights many of the best Victorian style commercial buildings constructed in San Diego during the years between the Civil War and World War I. Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 11am-3pm Cost: $3.00 donation per person.
