Of these, seven were eventually selected for the full Australian Team, seventeen for the under 21 Australian Team, and almost all to play for their State under 21 teams. Of the 40 full scholarship holders, 35 represented their states at under 21 level while 18 went on to represent the Australian Under 21 team against New Zealand. Of a total of 66 full and part time scholarships awarded in this year, 24 were selected for their senior state teams, while 6 played for the national senior team. The Australian Rugby Football Union appointed both coaches from the AIS as technical and tactical advisers to the coach of the Australian team during it's home series against France and the tour of New Zealand. The under 21 team against New Zealand recorded a win, a loss and a draw on it's three match tour in July. The National senior Team produced the major success of the program in 1991 when it won the World Cup Trophy in England. Four former and current scholarship holders were in the team and AIS coaches were involved with the team in the lead up to the during the World Cup matches. The Southern Hemisphere Championships were held in New Zealand with the AIS Australian U21's remaining undefeated to win the tournament. Players to advance to the National Level are Elton Flatley whilst 8 other players have advance to Super 12 Rugby. The New Zealand team fielded 3 players already selected for the All Blacks thus making the achievement a win against all olds. 17 AIS Scholarship holders made the side.

PROFESSOR TIM SISK'S GSIS CLASS AT THE WINTER OLYMPICS
April 9, 2002 — "Russian Olympic officials threaten to pull athletes from Games" and "Despite scandal, ex-Olympic chiefs make no apologies," read newspaper headlines reporting controversies that erupted at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City — a perfect laboratory for DU Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) students to examine the impact of international sports on world peace.
Fourteen undergraduate and graduate students experienced first-hand the global influence of international sport and conducted research at the 2002 Winter Games, Feb. 15–21, as part of the five-credit course Truce of the Gods: The Olympics and International Peace.
"The course took advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime setting to stimulate learning applied-research methods and allowed students to explore true international sport — a complex, riveting and unappreciated aspect of contemporary international relations," says Assoc. Prof. Tim Sisk, who created the class.
To prepare for the trip, the students researched the history of the Olympic movement, looked at past case studies and developed surveys. While in Salt Lake City, they conducted random street interviews on Olympic-related topics such as economics, social implications and political impacts. They also observed Olympic events in women’s hockey, men’s cross-country skiing and the Nordic combined, evaluating how issues such as ethnicity, gender, nationalism and commercialism are imbedded in international sport.

PROFESSOR JACK DONNELLY'S SPRING BREAK IN IRAN
Spring Break in the Axis of Evil
    Jack Donnelly
    Andrew Mellon Professor

In March I spent almost three weeks in Iran, mostly on personal business, but also giving lectures at the two leading universities in Tehran. This was my third trip there in the past fifteen months.
Political space remains highly circumscribed. (There were major new crackdowns, especially on student groups, this winter. And independent journalism remains a highly dangerous profession.) Politics is discussed, with real passion, but primarily in private, among friends, with considerable caution. Social space, however, is steadily expanding, especially in Tehran. Western dress is the norm (under a coat and scarf for women in public). Young men and women mix freely in public, even holding hands as they walk. Most women wear makeup, often as much as their American counterparts. All the latest American and European songs are readily available (on pirated cassettes and MP3 CDs), along with the music of exiled Iranian singers.
People with money who are scrupulously apolitical can lead a life that is surprisingly close to their counterparts in the States except that "unislamic" activities like drinking and dancing must be kept private, sexual mores and standards of public decency are closer to those of my grandmothers (and are enforced by law), and women are required to remain covered in public. And any activity that is deemed political and anti-regime is subject to harsh repression by often arbitrary authorities whose right to rule rests on theocratic self-selection rather than popular election.
