  • The Salon Interview Al Franken The political satirist scripts lines the Democrats could have used to win in 2000, muses on torture and orgasms and remains "concerned" about Rush Limbaugh. By Douglas Cruickshank Political satirist and author Al Franken speaks in the flat, soothing tone of a veteran broadcaster. He also looks nerdy. This combination of voice and visage makes everything he says seem funny or serious, depending on your political persuasion. So, for example, when he comes out in favor of torture, as he did in a February speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., not everybody gets the joke. And he was joking, he says. Mostly.

He continued by adding that "And serious students of this, of CRA, believe that it's had a significant role in lowering crime rates in our cities." The NCRC supports a bill pending in the House, H.R. 865, the Community Reinvestment Modernization Act of 2001, sponsored by Rep. Thomas M. Barrett, D-Wis., which would expand CRA to non-banks that are affiliated with banks, under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. Some community activists worry that banks are using GLB to affiliate with predatory lending companies that escape CRA and other bank regulations since they are non-banks. When Franken noted in his speech that all the cosponsors of this legislation are democrats with one exception, Rep. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a socialist, his comments brought laughter from the crowd.

I got to the booksigning event late. By the time I arrived at the book store, they were already finishing up the meeting and doing the booksigning. I did speak with Al's friend Norman Ornstein, who is a commentator on MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour and also guests on Al's new show "Lateline". I told him that the CFS might be a good joke for selling books, but that we were suffering from a real illness that has killed people and crippled others. Ornstein was a little surprised in the beginning, but he did come around a bit. When I confronted Al about the CFS references in his book, he replied "I said that CFS was a real, physical disease". But then I came back with "a reasonable person would surely think that you were making fun of the diagnosis if they saw your appearances on Letterman, and the Today show". Then he shrugged and gave me a look like "Hey, I'm a comedian, what do you want from me?" Al was kind of caught off guard, but I wasn't rude to him. He did realize that we were not happy about the insult. I asked him if his good friends Hilary and Bill knew that he was making fun of a diagnosis that tens of thousands of sick gulf war veterans were suffering from. He said, "I was not aware of that." Then I said "Well, I have more than a few friends that couldn't be here tonight to voice their opinions because ... they are dead!" Then his handlers said "Let's keep the line moving."

Text edited based on delivery. I was all set to give a speech today entitled, "American Jihad." But after receiving several complaints, I've decided instead to give a less controversial speech entitled: "The Case for Profiling Young Arab Men." Before I go any further, I would like to thank the University and President Summers for conferring upon me an honorary degree, an honorary doctorate, in Afro-American Studies. And especially for offering me a chair as a professor in that Departmentan offer I hereby most heartily accept. I don't know much about Afro-American Studies. But I can assure you that I can use the summer to get myself up to speed. But seriously, it is an honor to speak here today to you, the graduating class of 2002, and to congratulate all of youfor getting into Harvard in the first place. Because let's face it, once you get in here, as long as you don't kill someone or embezzle $100,000 from your student organization, you're going to graduate. And to those of you who are graduating with honorscongratulations on doing some of the reading and on going to many of your classes, and getting notes from friends on the classes you didn't go to, and on handing in most of your papers on time. Way to go! Good work!

    It's Me, Al Franken
America's leading political satirist, who combines personality, education and religion, comes to Atlanta.
Tom Singer / Special to the Jewish Times Political satirists had a field day as the 2000 presidential election degenerated into a clinic on counting (and recounting and counting some more). For Al Franken, who makes his living and reputation throwing darts at the inflated balloons of politicians, this was like hitting the jackpot. These are political satirists' salad days. And the dressing? A George W. Bush victory. "I think there is sort of a rooting interest of satirists for Bush," Franken said in an interview with ABC prior to the election. "He's not, shall we say, an intellectually curious person, and I think if he makes it ¿ and I don't think he will, by the way ¿ he'll be good fodder." But for Franken, the enduring monarch of them all, there are more important things to attend to. He is on his way from his New York home to Boston, where he will check up on the proudest accomplishment of his considerable body of work, which includes:
    • Fifteen years as a "Saturday Night Live" writer and producer, which earned him five Emmy Awards.

Political satirist and comedian Al Franken will share his wit and wisdom with this year's outgoing seniors as the 2002 Class Day speaker, the Harvard College Class of 2002 Senior Class Committee announced Tuesday (April 16). Franken, a member of the class of 1973, is a former writer on "Saturday Night Live" and creator of the show's New Age cable TV host Stuart Smalley, among other characters. Franken follows last year's appearance by U2 lead singer Bono and "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien '85 in 2000. "They're really excited about this. We know he'll be quite funny as well as have some good things to say," said Hoopes Wampler, the Harvard Alumni Association's director for college alumni programs. Wampler said the class wanted to follow on last year's appearance by Bono and feature an entertainer like Franken.

To Al Franken, it's all comedy
In this story: No shortage of material A long ride 'It's comedy' RELATED STORIES, SITES By Jamie Allen CNN.com Senior Writer ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Al Franken is not going to write a book about the 2000 election. The man who elected himself president in his 1999 bestseller "Why Not Me?: The Inside Story of the Making and Unmaking of the Franken Presidency" is going to let someone else do the heavy lifting. "I think by the time the election's over, people are sick of the election," he says in an interview prior to an appearance on CNN's "Morning News." "I mean, somebody's going to do a great book about Florida and what happened during that month. But not me. That should be a real investigative book." Not that he's forsaking politics or political humor. Indeed, it's been his bread and butter the past few years. Along with anchoring Comedy Central's election-night coverage in the early 1990s and frequent appearances on ABC's "Politically Incorrect," Franken has written two books with a political bent: "Why Not Me?" and "Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot: And Other Observations."

    Al Franken's guide to life
Humorist offers tips in 'Oh, the Things I Know!'
Al Franken tells graduates the truth in "Oh, the Things I Know!" and he knows whereof he speaks. By Todd Leopold CNN (CNN) This is the time of year when new graduates, ready to make their way in the world, are greeted by gifts of books. You know the type of work Dr. Seuss' "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" Anna Quindlen's "A Short Guide to a Happy Life," Maria Shriver's "Ten Things I Wish I'd Known Before I Went Out into the Real World" earnest, uplifting (and slim) volumes about how life is a journey and an adventure, full of excitement, pleasure and wonderment. Which, as Al Franken can tell you, is just a load of hooey. The chapter titles to Franken's new book, "Oh, the Things I Know!" (Dutton), say it all: "Oh, the Mistakes You'll Keep Repeating!" "Oh, Are You Going to Hate Your First Job!" "Oh, the Violent Television Your Children Will Watch!" and of course, "Oh, What Doesn't Kill You Can Have Lingering Aftereffects!" This is life from the perspective of a person who's actually lived Well, OK, it's a parody. But one that was ripe for the writing, Franken says in a phone interview from his home in New York. He had planned to write a book about getting to the top of the corporate world, but his publisher showed him the books by Quindlen and Shriver and asked if he would do something like it.

Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot: and Other Observations
    Author Info: Al Franken
Yeah, so what? What does his weight or his IQ have to do with anything? Here's the real question : Rush Limbaugh is such an easy object of satire; how did Al Franken manage to swing and miss ? If you've ever listened to Rush's radio show, you know how bombastic and braggadocios he is; he seems to be making fun of himself half of the time. In fact if you've ever heard the Rush parody on Imus in the Morning , the real show isn't much different. He's completely over the top, tries to stir up controversy, takes on every hot button issue, and talks for three hours a day. Over the years he must have said thousands of things that you could pick apart and make look stupid. But all Franken has to offer is a few such examples and some personal invective about his weight, personal history and multiple marriages. The book is neither funny nor a response to Rush's ideology. If Franken actually had anything to say, he might have taken Rush down a few pegs. Instead he got the only response this book really deserved, a book called

Considered one of America's top comedians and satirists, Al Franken is a five-time Emmy winner for his work on Saturday Night Live, the 1997 Grammy winner for Best Comedy Album, and author of two best-selling books. Franken was part of the original writing staff that created the groundbreaking SNL in 1975. Four of his Emmy's are for writing, the fifth for producing. He also won recognition for his on-camera work for such characterizations as "The One-Man Mobile Up-Link Unit" and new age cable host Stuart Smalley. Smalley was the subject of Franken's 1992 book, I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough and Doggone It, People Like Me. The book provided the basis for a movie that Franken wrote and starred in for Paramount Pictures, Stuart Saves His Family. Franken also co-wrote the 1994 Touchstone Pictures hit move When a Man Loves a Woman, starring Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan. Franken is a well-known political satirist, is the only comedian to perform twice at the White House Correspondents Dinners, and has established himself as one of the nation's top after-dinner speakers and lecturers. Franken's second book, Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot, was on the New York Times bestseller list for eight months. His latest book, Why Not Me,? a chronicle of his bid for the Presidency and his subsequent disastrous administration, is also a New York Times bestseller.

Smalley was the subject of Franken’s 1992 book, I’m Good Enough, I’m Smart Enough, and Doqgone It, People Like Me. The 1995 movie, ‘Stuart Saves His Family,’ was directed by Harold Rats and received ‘Two Thumbs Up’ from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. Franken was co-writer (with Ronald Bass) of the 1994 Touchstone Pictures hit movie ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’ starring Andy Garcia and Meg: Ryan. Ebert called the drama ‘a wise and ambitious film about the way alcoholism affects the fabric of a marriage.’
