    DAVID GRANT
January 4 - February 11, 2003 at Newspace Gallery , Hollywood by Judith Christensen
Sometimes the surface of a sculpture is so striking, so sensuous, that we ask only that it seduce us. Occasionally we get that and more, as in the case of David Grant. The eight formsall from 2002in his exhibit entitled Dermis range from the erotically gorgeous to the patently funny. Each of the sculptures is made of leather that Grant has painted, sewn together with crossed baseball stitches, then stretched tautly over a steel armature. This blend of media and processes evokes multiple connections: to animal and human skin, to leather furniture, to the American sport of baseball, and to the traditions of both painting and sculpture.
An untitled circular wall piece with cupids, hearts, flowers, naked ladies and the word "Lucky" painted on it is blatantly erotic, but with a sardonic twist. Instead of sweet cherub faces, the cupids have calaveras for heads. Lucky, indeed. The eroticism in another circular wall piece is subtler, drawing you in slowly and, because of that, more deeply. The neutral background color and prominence of the cross-stitching mean that you can’t miss the reference to a giant baseball. The imagery is lovelysumptuous red roses with leaves and stems gracefully twining around thembut the surface isn’t flat. Each rose is raised, resembling a soft, supple breast. The juxtaposition of baseball and breast, male and female, and the use of the rosewith its soft petals and unpleasant thornsconjures up a variety of inferences. In Grant’s world, things are not always as they appear. Every rose has its thorn, and beauty is skin-deep.

The main surnames that I am researching are as follows, if anyone can help please E-Mail me:-
    ALLAN,
BEAUMONT, BROWN, BURGESS, ... THORN My Great Great Grandfather Jacob JACK married Matilda Mary BEAUMONT. He was a sea captain and his Son William Jacob JACK emigrated to New Zealand c1870 where he married Elizabeth BURGESS daughter of Henry BURGESS and Annie HAYES. She came to New Zealand as a teenager with her mother and was an only child.
The most enjoyable part of my research has been the quest to find my Grandmothers side of the family as her father Garrett FITZSIMMONS was brother to the great pugilist Robert FITZSIMMONS . I have been in search of any family of Bob Fitzsimmons in the USA to aid with that side of the family.

Mildred Grant donated the papers of David M. Grant to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri-St. Louis November 11, 1995 David Grant was an African American lawyer and civil rights leader. He was born January 1, 1903 in the Mill Creek Valley area of St. Louis. Grant attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from 1920 to 1923. Grant worked as a waiter in Hot Springs, Mackinac Island, French Lick, and West Palm Beach. He also worked as a club car porter on railroads out of St. Louis. In 1927 Grant began attending Howard University Law School in Washington, D. C. He graduated in 1930. Grant was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1930, the Federal Bar in 1938, and to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court in 1948. When Grant return to St. Louis in the 30s, he became active in Democratic politics. It was unusual because in that era of history most African Americans voted for the Republican Party out of respect for Abraham Lincoln. In 1931 Grant organized the first African American picket for economic justice. It was against the newly built Woolworth Company dime store located on Franklin Avenue. Grant was responsible for helping African Americans to be employed in the store. Later Grant was instrumental in organizing the Colored Clerks Circle, a union which picketed establishments which refused to employ African Americans.
