Griffith, D. W. (David Wark Griffith), 1880-1948, American movie director and producer, b. La Grange, Ky. Griffith was the first major American film director. He began his film career as an actor and a scenario writer in 1908 with the Biograph Company. He soon began to direct and at once began to explore the full potential of camerawork, editing (or montage Judith of Bethulia (1913), and followed with the then-immense ten-reel Birth of a Nation (1915), an anthology of film technique and a landmark in the history of cinema. Stung by criticism of his negative portrayal of mulattos, he responded with a more audacious work. Intolerance (1916) sought to demonstrate the persistence of racial and social prejudice through the ages. In 1919, with Charlie Chaplin , Douglas Fairbanks , and Mary Pickford , he founded United Artists. Among his films, frequently alternating between historical spectacles and modest domestic dramas, are Hearts of the World Broken Blossoms Way Down East (1920), and

For Immediate Release KINO ON VIDEO TO RELEASE THE D. W. GRIFFITH MASTERWORKS COLLECTION COMPILING GRIFFITH'S MOST IMPORTANT FILMS Kino on Video is proud to announce that on December 10, 2002, it will release the GRIFFITH MASTERWORKS DVD BOX SET , an unprecedented compilation of the most important works from master filmmaker D. W. Griffith. This collection of seven DVD discs includes four of Griffith's most acclaimed feature films: BIRTH OF A NATION (1915) - available in a two-disc set,- INTOLERANCE BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919) and ORPHANS OF THE STORM (1921), as well as 22 rare BIOGRAPH SHORTS The two-disc set BIOGRAPH SHORTS compiles one and two reel films directed by Griffith during his six-year position with the American Biograph Company-1908-1913. Having made over 450 shorts before leaving Biograph to make feature films, these works showcase Griffith's early steps towards developing a cinematic language for narrative cinema. Filmmaker D. W. Griffith was both a master and a pioneer. Responsible for unparalleled interventions in the history of film aesthetics, Griffith's work is at the same time seminal and controversial. BIRTH OF A NATION is, for instance, both a widely discussed example of racism in the medium and an unmatched step towards establishing cinema as a popular art form. The GRIFFITH MASTERWORKS DVD BOX SET is offered at the special low price of $99.95 and each DVD comes with a host of special features. Among the DVD extras are: an interview with actor Walter Huston (Griffith's Abraham Lincoln), a radio recording of Erich von Stroheim's eulogy for Griffith, exclusive footage of the director's funeral, an introduction to INTOLERANCE by Orson Welles and never-before-seen documents from the New York Censor Board.

    37. DEEP FOCUS: D. W. Griffith

    http://alumni.imsa.edu/~mitch/directors/griffith.html
Griffith would have wanted it this way; after all, he was his greatest promoter. Like Thomas Edison and Jelly Roll Morton, Griffith felt a need to inflate his image. Edison took full credit for inventions he merely improved upon, Jelly Roll claimed to have invented jazz, and Griffith took credit for almost everything in the art of filmmaking. In an ad published in the New York Dramatic Mirror on December 3, 1913, Griffith proclaimed himself the "producer of all great Biograph successes, revolutionizing Motion Picture drama and founding the modern technique of the art." Just as his inventions were exaggerated, so was the greatness of his films. Not that he was a bad director; he made some very good films. However, all of his work fall short of the reputation that his endured all these years. For one thing, they were very uneven. Griffith could be very effective when he restrained his actors, but such minimalism in acting does not occur frequently in his films. "He always wanted us to jump around, finding rabbits behind trees," said Mary Pickford. This did not go unnoticed by film critics of the time. Hazel Simpson Clark wrote in Motion Picture , March 1919 on The Greatest Thing In Life , saying, "Little Lillian Gish is shown to beautiful advantage in three or four closeups...The rest of the time she jumps 'ingenuishly' all over the place. The charm of Lillian is a very poignant thing and should not be tampered with in this manner, no matter how great the director."
