  • Biography o Introduction o Neil Hannon IS The Divine Comedy: he writes the lyrics and the music, he sings, he plays the piano - and other types of keyboards - and the guitar - mainly the guitar. On early Divine Comedy releases, he even produced them by himself.
Neil's parents Neil Hannon was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, on November 7th, in 1970. His father is an Anglican clergyman - he is the bishop of Clogher - and, as a consequence, Neil grew up in a Protestant atmosphere in a place where religious dissentions are very strong. All we know about his mother is that she transmitted him her love for horses - and maybe for dogs too. The last thing we can say about his family background is that Neil has two brothers. A gift is always something we become aware of early. As for Neil, he starts learning the piano at the age of 7 because he was attracted to the piano which was in his parents' house. At the end of the first lesson, his teacher said: "Neil has a great ear but very little motivation." In 1981, the Hannons left Londonderry to settle in Enniskillen.

NEIL HANNON - SIMPLY DIVINE NEIL HANNON has explained the reasons behind splitting THE DIVINE COMEDY last year, and has explained the reasons for keeping the name as a solo artist. Hannon disbanded The Divine Comedy in October last year. Since the split, he has been working on a new album, which could be released later this year. Now, writing to fans on his official website, Hannon explained his future plans. Speaking about his next album, he said: "I’ve thought about musicals but too many people have to be involved. I’ve thought about film scores but I can’t find a film that really inspires me to make music." He went on to speak about his old band line-up. "I found that I simply wasn’t enjoying it all as much as I used to", he confessed. "I missed the freedom I had in the old days, and felt I was watering down my ideas to keep everyone happy. It wasn’t a big problem, I wasn’t ever going to have a nervous breakdown over it, and we could’ve carried on quite happily and been as successful as we’d wanted to be. Unfortunately life’s too short to settle for that. It was of course a terrible thing to have to do to one’s friends but I believed I was doing the right thing for us all."

NEIL HANNON ... the long hair will be overlooked. he is still a god. drank lucozade from the same cooler ... ate chocolates from the same bag ... shared champagne ... i wish i could say we had an extensive, profound conversation, but shaking hands and stealing the same water is a start. if i didn't think his red haired gal was nice i would knock her off and run away with him because i'm sure he wouldn't mind. oh ... neil hannon ... also i do like the new songs; they're still beautiful and lord, he was beautiful singing them onstage. he was even beautiful in the dressing room backstage. i didn't realize his eyes were so light. he sang lucy. i was in heaven. will write a more coherent report when i have real internet time. Neil Hannon takes time out from reworking Noel Coward songs and the new Divine Comedy album to answer some questions.

Loose Ends or TFI Friday - which do you prefer?
Thank fuck it's neither. Favourite radio show?
Radcliffe and Lard on Radio One. Wine or brandy - which is better?
Desert wine preferably. You are castaway on a desert island. You can take one person with you. Who would that be?
Chris Evans - it would be my last act of mercy for the world. Favourite Northern Irish pop single of all time?
Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl". Undertones or U2 - who gets the Hannon vote?
U2 - the Undertones were far too spotty. Neil Hannon and clubbing - discuss
Nothing to discuss really. Last time you were very, very drunk?
At the Boyzone album launch in Chelsea. Strings on pop records - a good or a bad thing? Good if handled with care. Do you buy men's magazines like FHM and Loaded? No but I look over the crew's shoulders.

Idle Chatter with. . . Neil Hannon and Joby Talbot!
If you've ever heard the Divine Comedy , then you're already getting excited, 'cos you know it's the best pop music in the world right now, (next to Beck, obviously. tee hee!) and it's not even rock'n'roll. Neil Hannon sings like Scott Walker and includes 30 piece orchestras, literary references, and, of course, the BBC Young Composer of 1996 Joby Talbot . I garnered an interview out of both of them on April 16th in Washington DC, only it just ended up being a whole lot of horsing around and not much business. This is the full, lenghty transcript. I'm warning you: It's a bit silly and never ends...

Sara- Okay first thing I want to know is. . . [I was REALLY nervous, by the way]
what is your impression of the United States?

Joby - Right, well [stands up] this is Florida [points to left arm] and then California is over there, and I can't do Alaska.
Neil - Aha-hah. That's funny, that. [Both start giggling.] Uh, right. Uh, first impressions were about two years ago and New York was the first place I came to. In fact, I never left Manhattan the whole time I was there, so Manhattan was my only impression of America, so it's a bit weird. [laughs] Um, well, we kinda completely missed out on the middle bit. You know, the bit between ten miles inland both ways.[giggles]

    Tim -Captain Sensible? Who knows...
Mike - I wanna hear. I wanna hear him get back together with the Damned again. That'd be cool. [Neil's haughty giggle can be heard.] I heard they were getting back together...
Tim - So, you must be excited about this UK Subs reunion tour?
Mike - Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That oughta be fun. I wanna go visit England myself,I'm gonna go up there as soon as, I'm gonna go up this summer.
Joby - Oh, yeah? Mike -'cos uh, I also wanna go up to that Sommerset [? sorry, I'm so unknowledgable!] house joint and like check out, you know, like family histories and shit. I've researched back to my great-grandfather and Iwanna go back further. Joby - oh, yes. What's your surname? Mike -What? Joby - What's your surname?

    The Divine Comedy
    est.1989
The Divine Comedy, as seen in record shops, is the work of a fun-size 27 year old Celt called Neil Hannon. He grew up the son of a priest (Hannon the Cannon as he used to be known) in a mainly protestant school in the Republic, shy, introverted and with a keen ambition to design cars for a local motor company.
Thankfully, at the age of 17 he started going to pubs, gigs and concerts, which, combined with a youth spent obsessing over classical and indie music and a moment of epiphany while watching Merchant Ivory's film of A Room With A View , resulted in Neil developing a singular ambition to become a musician, a proper one, like.
By 1989, NH (on guitar and vocals) had formed a band with two of his school chums, John McCullough (bass) and Kevin Traynor (drums) named The Divine Comedy. They recorded an album of indie-based despairing ballads titled Fanfare For The Comic Muse in 1990, with two similar follow-up records, Timewatch and Europop . Sales were not high by anyone's standards. In fact quality of life for the band wasn't high by most people's standards and Neil was left on his own to fend for himself when the other members bailed out to follow educational paths to proper careers. (This accounts for the peculiar nomenclature of The Divine Comedy, as it is now, in the unusual sense of the phrase, a one-man-band)

But if you want to know who Neil is, check out at "Liberation", "Promenade" and "A Short Album About Love", and you will realise that he is without any doubt one of the best lyricist of the 90's. Music, probably? Mark: Yeah. I just listened to [The Divine Comedy album] Cassanova . It's brilliant. Neil: Oh you like it? Mark: Yeah, it's great. Neil: I've just listened to your [album] Caught in a Trap? I think it's brilliant. Mark: Oh. Okay. (laughs) Well, bye. Neil: (laughs) I think that's all we need to say. Mark: I think so too, that's great. I think the reason [the readers of] CMJ should buy our respective records is that we have a really good time. Neil: So, why that [ Caught In A Trap And I Can't Back Out 'Cause I Love You Too Much, Baby ] title? Mark: I guess the same reason as Cassanova . I mean, the record is a love album. You are in Venice... and you are wearing those glasses that say "love" on the side. You're at the wheel of a boat... So it's the same thing with me... Caught in a trap is me. I'm stuck in a boat waiting out for some major rock band... Neil: I like the way it starts with acoustic tracks and then you bring in the rest of the band, which is unusual... I wanted to know–this is a silly question–do you still have your blue and gray shirt from that song?

February 2000 NH: What brings you to London? AL: I flew over just to meet Neil Hannon. NH: I don't believe it. I going to nick one of those Primal Scream posters. Their management has offices downstairs. Creation bit the dust though. AL: Nostradamus said that "Creation would end in the year 1999." So he was right about that! NH: Oh my God! Wrong Creation. Makes perfect sense. AL: Your band is moving on from Setanta to bigger and better things. NH: We've sold our souls to the multinationals. It's become more so because EMI just merged with Warner Brothers. Setanta has gone from the smaller label in the world to the biggest. It's come to its natural end. The band and the label were growing at the same speed, then we overtook the label, and label couldn't get us to where we wanted to be. Call it blind ambition if you want, but we knew it was time to shift up a gear. I am one of those freaks who doesn't believe in keeping things small just for the sake of it. AL: Setanta was a very small label back in 1990.
