Sen. Hannon Firewise Keynote Speaker
Sen. Hannon has been a leader for many years in the Oregon Legislature's ways-and-means process. In the mid-1990s, his influence set the stage for the development of a key piece of wildfire-related legislation. "In that context, Sen. Hannon was instrumental in helping raise the issue of the wildland-urban interface," Oregon Department of Forestry's Clark Seely said. The assistant state forester noted that the legislative process "ultimately culminated in passage of Senate Bill 360." This groundbreaking law, entitled the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act of 1997, calls for classification of urban fringe areas that are vulnerable to wildfire. It is estimated that more than 250,000 Oregonians reside in the wildland-urban interface. The legislation also specifies establishment of standards for property owners to meet in order to minimize the fire hazards. In some cases it could be advantageous to meet Senate Bill 360 standards on a neighborhood, rather than individual homeowner, basis. The Firewise Communities Workshop will give participants the tools and know-how for this corporate approach to reducing fire risk.

Hannon baby is a ‘divine’ gift
Successful pop singer and songwriter Neil Hannon and his wife Orla became parents over the Christmas period with the birth of their daughter Willow.
Baby Willow was born by caesarean section at a London Hospital on December 19 — coincidentally on Orla’s birthday. She weighed eight and a half pounds. Both mother and baby left hospital three days after the birth, just in time to enjoy a family Christmas at their London home. Neil is a son of the Rt. Rev Brian Hannon, Bishop of Clogher and Mrs. Maeve Hannon. Earlier this week Bishop and Mrs. Hannon returned from a trip to England where they had spent time with Neil, Orla and Willow. “They are doing fine. We were with them from Friday to Sunday,” said Bishop Hannon on Monday. “We are absolutely delighted. They are both making very good parents,” he added. Willow is the fourth grand-daughter for Bishop and Mrs. Hannon. Their eldest son Desmond and his wife Helen are parents to two little girls while their second son Brendan and wife Frances have one daughter. view 2002-01-03 news index Goto printable version

Neil Hannon The Divine Comedy is Neil Hannon. Over the years, the name has encompassed other musicians, but the driving force of the band and its main (sometimes only!) member has always been Neil Hannon. He chose the name 'The Divine Comedy' aged 18, almost at random. He and two Enniskillen school friends needed a new name for their band and Neil spotted a copy of Dante's epic poem on the family bookshelf. It stuck, and a year later it was the name under which the trio signed to Irish run indie Setanta Records . They left Northern Ireland, moved into a squat in London, released a mini-album, 1990's REM/Ride influenced 'Fanfare for the Comic Muse' and '91's 'Europop' E.P. then split up. Neil's bandmates went to university and Neil returned home. Retaining the name, he spent 18 months living in his parents' attic, sleeping during the day, watching old movies and writing songs at night. Influenced by everything from Jacques Brel, Scott Walker and Michael Nyman to "A Room with a View", Wordsworth, and Mr Benn, these songs eventually evolved into two albums. The first of these, 'Liberation' was released in 1993. Totally different to anything else around, and indeed his previous work, he now considers it his first album proper. The press adored it. The NME described it as "..an array of seductive yarns.. glorious, gleeful tunesmanship." Dave Cavanagh, writing in Select said "...one of the bountiful, overflowing joys of the year. Any year." Melody Maker described it as "An album that could make any listener want to stumble up to him and proclaim 'Neil, you're a genius'". In Volume, Graham Linehan (later co-creator of Father Ted) said "Liberation was by a mile the best LP of '93 and it probably won't be bettered until the follow-up."

    Summary
The album opens with the lament: 'There's not enough hours in the day / To say all that I want to say' (Timestretched) . There is frustration at the limits we experience in life. The world seems to be going so fast we cannot achieve all we would like. Even those who are creative are unable to express themselves fully: 'There's not enough lines on the stave / To capture the music I crave' (Timestretched) . The result is repetitive dissatisfaction, disappointment and an inability to fully relate to those around us: 'It feels like I'm chasing my tail' (Timestretched).

    Interviewer:
Neil, how did you get involved in working on this album with Ute?
Neil Hannon: I suppose it was David Sefton, the man responsible for getting the whole thing together. We'd done a few shows in the Royal Festival Hall, and he'd been the middle man in it all. He also got us up to Edinburgh to do a thing with Michael Nyman, for his Flux Festival, so we'd developed a relationship with him. He mentioned the project to us and I knew of Ute from the one-woman show things, like Marlene Dietrich. That was cool. And also obviously because she was plastered all over the town in Chicago. It just sounded like a jolly fun thing to do.
Int: Can you tell us something about the songs that you've co-written on the album?
Neil: Joby and I sat down together in the early part of this year, trying to figure out what to do. We'd both got a couple of tunes each but with very few words to speak of. Generally the tunes always come first though, and luckily they did, and they seemed to be suitable. So I brainstormed and what's basically there in the lyrics is the spontaneous fruits of my madness.
Int: Can you tell us about The Case Continues?

The Divine Comedy at David Bowie's Meltdown festival Royal Festival Hall, Monday 17th June I have seen one other artist conduct what I would call a laid back gig. It sucked. I won’t shame the artist by naming him, suffice to say that he is not a hero like Robert DeNiro and that smoking dope is not a performance enhancing drug. The Divine Comedy gave us a very different kind of laid back gig. The band - Rob Farrer on percussion, Ivor Talbot on acoustic guitar, a string quartet and, of course, Neil Hannon - were on stage before the lights went down. Hannon took his low-key place behind a keyboard at the side of the stage, sleepily thanking us for the welcome and telling us, ‘my name is Neil’. Once he found out what key he was meant to be in, the band launched into ‘Tonight We Fly’. When they were finished, Hannon spoke to us all some more before finding out the key for the next song. And this is how it was for much of the evening. After playing the first new song of the evening - ‘Come Home Billy Byrd’, a song which suggests Hannon sacked his band in order to write the kind of songs he got famous for - he explained he had severe jet-lag, having travelled from Atlanta that morning. This was why he was so eager to talk about football. Americans never know what sport you are talking about when you say their team did well. At this moment, an American woman in the audiance called out ‘America two, Mexico zero!’.

    THE DIVINE COMEDY, BRIXTON ACADEMY
    FRIDAY OCTOBER 26th 2001
Amid rumours of an imminent split, The Divine Comedy appeared tense and a little reserved as they embarked upon their late-October Brixton Academy gig. Launching straight into material from their current album "Regeneration" without so much as a nod or a wink, left the fans looking pensive had there been a massive falling out? Would the joviality and good humour of old be lost in a gig of divorce-like sentiment? Was this going to be a disastrous performance?
Neil Hannon answered those questions as soon as he'd got the neatly segued first fifteen minutes out of the way. "We're going to play a lot of songs tonight" he announced, "hope you don't mind". No objections were raised (rather, a deafening cheer erupted from the assembled crowd) and the band seemed to exhale simultaneously.
The gig turned out to be something of an aficionado affair. The obvious early hits ("Something For The Weekend" / "Frog Princess" / "Becoming More Like Alfie") were absent, but, particularly for the hardcore fans, "Songs Of Love" (a.k.a. the theme from Father Ted), glorious "Short Album About Love" track "If I Were You (I¹d Be Through With Me)" and a cheeky cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "The Power Of Love" were certainly worth turning out for.
The fabulous "Sweden" (one of the band's most outstanding & accomplished tracks) filled the Academy with baritone bluster, while the "Carry On" lyrics and irresistible sing-a-long hooks of "National Express" sent the stalls into a state of glee.

Many will find it boring. But the hell with them. The Bottom Line If you like your indie-pop by turns joyous and sorrowful, but always intelligent, then enjoy! Full Review One day, Neil Hannon must have woken up and said, "I'm fed up of being an arch, ironic, latter day Noel Coward". Perhaps it was the day that he wrote "Too Young To Die", a subdued new track on the band's 1999 Best Of album, in which he suggested "maybe it's time for a change". Perhaps it was a result of meeting his future wife. Whatever the cause, the result was "Regeneration". This album finds The Divine Comedy discovering a word that had not previously been a major presence in their vocabulary: subtlety. But Hannon (it is easy to forget the rest of the band, probably the main reason why this incarnation of The Divine Comedy came to an end late last year) has not lost his ear for a melody and a wonderful lyric.

By Destiny Lilly “The Divine Comedy…… didn’t they do that woodshed song?” Yes, these were the words spoken to me by an employee at Tower Records when I eagerly purchased my copy of Regeneration , the latest and greatest album from the Divine Comedy The young lad behind the counter has probably never taken the time to listen to the Divine Comedy’s fabulous back catalogue that includes such stellar gems as 1994’s Promenade and 1997’s A Short Album About Love If one were purely judging the band on the merits of it’s quirky singles, it would be easy to dismiss it as a jokey one-hit-wonder, but I suspect that this slack-jawed teenager is unaware of the transformation that has occurred in the Divine Comedy camp. Tired of being associated with comical turns-of-phrase and tailored suits, Neil Hannon and his band have decided to strip down to the bare essentials. The masks have come off of the musicians and the music.
