Arts Art ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! Ask Rolf Harris Sunday 10 November 2002 In his second BBC1 series Rolf on Art Rolf Harris looks at the work of four very different artists; Toulouse-Lautrec, Klimt, Rodin and Rousseau. Rolf joined us live online after the first programme in the series. Here are his answers to your questions. Question from Katherine - I read in your profile that you were inspired by Hawyard Veal. Could you tell me a little more about him? He was a painter from Melbourne, and a student of a Scots painter. People say he was all muddy browns, but this painter got Veal enthused about impressionist painting. I was 15 when I first saw one of his paintings, a misty scene of Sydney harbour, and it was exquisite. I loved it and wanted to paint like that. I met him in London later by chance, and it was magic. It was such a shock for him to hear an Australian voice from someone who recognised him. He was doing a two-week art course, and said I was welcome to come along. He said he'd see if he could help me, and he took me under his wing. He showed me the basics of that approach, painting everything as a blur. He was lovely, and always made sure I had a few bob. Question from Richard Stead - If you could meet any artist living or dead, who would it be?

As an artist, better known than Picasso, and the David Jason of populist family entertainment, Rolf Harris (now in his 70s) is still the true television-era renaissance man. And we say that without a hint of studied BLOCKBUSTER contestant "wackiness" (in fact the only blip on an otherwise faultless CV has been Rolf's embracement of ironic adulation from a certain "Size Of A Cow" t-shirt wearing constituent in the mid-'90s). This is the man who's worked on albums with George Martin, who's penned a best-selling book ("True Animal Tales"), whose programme (ANIMAL HOSPITAL) has won the National Television Awards "Most Popular Factual Entertainment Show" four times, who's been awarded both the MBE and OBE and who proved more memorable on the BBC's 2000 TODAY than Gaby Roslin and Jeremy Spake discussing the fall of Boris Yeltsin. Out of all the Mighty TV Cream Heroes, Rolf stands as the colossus, whose shadow casts long over all others as he strides (three-legged) down the Hall Of TV Fame.

Rolf Harris OBE TV Presenter One of those shoots where you get fifteen minutes with the subject. However, to his credit, Rolf was excellent. He gave his undivided attention to the job in hand. It's suprising how much film you can shoot in quarter of an hour, in the foyer of a London radio station, with passers-by pressing their noses up against the glass windows calling for Rolf's autograph.

Two Little Boys
Two little boys had two little toys
Each had a wooden horse
Gaily they played each summer's day
Warriors both of course
One little chap then had a mishap
Broke off his horse's head Wept for his toy then cried with joy As his young playmate said Did you think I would leave you crying When there's room on my horse for two Climb up here Jack and don't be crying I can go just as fast with two When we grow up we'll both be soldiers And our horses will not be toys And I wonder if we'll remember When we were two little boys Long years had passed, war came so fast Bravely they marched away Cannon roared loud, and in the mad crowd Wounded and dying lay Up goes a shout, a horse dashes out Out from the ranks so blue Gallops away to where Joe lay Then came a voice he knew Did you think I would leave you dying When there's room on my horse for two Climb up here Joe, we'll soon be flying

Teach Them To Swim
with Rolf Harris with thanks to Gareth Randall Establishing shot of a swimming pool. A child dives in from a diving board. Rolf: [To the children] (Those of you who can't swim yet, then, if you'd just wait over there in the shallow for me.) Rolf: [To the camera] Kids and water. They love it! Rivers. Canals. Even the lily pond in the garden. You can't keep 'em away from it. Water has a fascination for children. Shot of two children diving in from the side of the pool Cut back to Rolf in Close-Up And I should know. When I was three years old, I fell in the river at our place. Couldn't swim. Somehow, managed to scramble my way to the bank. Frightened the wits of of my mum and dad. And you can bet they had me taught to swim very soon after that. But some children aren't quite so lucky. And if they can't swim and they go off by themselves to play by the side of some water somewhere, you know only too well what might happen. That's why I had my little girl taught to swim as soon as possible. Cut to shot of girl playing by submerging and then reappearing. Back to Rolf.

69. Otway Online: The Rolf Harris Connection
Details of the mysterious links between John Otway and rolf harris, which seems,to me, to be worthy of a whole series of Carol Vorderman shows.

The Rolf Harris Connection
Last Updated: Tuesday, 11 May, 1999 Having just finished writing about nepotism in the British music industry (see my All Balls And No Willy review) I have just discovered another Otway related example. Back in 1992 Otway released a CD single of "Two Little Boys" - a song made famous by Rolf Harris . Otway's version was vastly superior, being an up tempo version with a full band. It featured "Attila the Stockbroker" on violin, and was even publicised with at least one television appearance (Channel 4's "Packet of three"). It also made its way onto Otway's "Under the covers and over the top" CD. At around the same time, Rolf himself decided to relaunch his music career with a wobble-board and accordian based version of Led Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to heaven". In a tragic twist of fate, the amusing, but hardly brilliant "Stairway..." rose steadily to a high level in the charts, whilst the technically superior Otway song sank without a trace. Otway's next single also bombed - despite being taken from a television advert at the same time that a single from a jeans advert hit number one. Rolf, however, seemed far more certain to hit the charts with his next release, which was a wobble-board and fiddle based version of Queen's classic, "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Cloudbusting Kate Bush In Her Own Words
Rolf Harris
We're coming up now on one of kate's favourite songs of all time. Ladies and gentlemen, this could be the only show in history to feature both frank zappa and rolf harris. Giggle from kate. And I remember, I remember hearing this song on the radio in america in the sixties. Did you hear it on the radio or from a copy at home?
From the radio television personality. But it seems to me he's got a great deal of musical talent, and for me this track is just magic. It's just... Oh...
In the early sixties ``sun arise'' was a very experimental sound. The record is played. It is immediately obvious how direct and heavy was the influence of this recording upon kate's track, `` the dreaming .'' not only the rhythmic pulse and instrumentation, but even the unusual use of a major-key tune that avoids resolution in the tonic, using instead a single, unchanging dijeridu drone; As well as the use of the vocal lines as a group of peculiar instruments - all these qualities are echoed, even reproduced in kate's track. - ied I was just thinking if john peel had an experimental radio programme then as he does now, he would have been playing that rolf harris song.

'A guy stood up and sang Tie Me Kangaroo Down. I thought: oh no, here we go again'
Bindi Harris is struggling to be taken seriously as an artist in her own right - a tall order when your father is Rolf. She talks to Corinne Sweet
Friday February 7, 2003
The Guardian
Bindi Harris: 'people only ever really want to talk about Dad, which I find utterly tedious.' Bindi Harris, the only daughter of the ubiquitously ebullient Rolf, doesn't usually give interviews. "I have avoided them like the plague," she explains with a wide, wry smile as I enter her north London terraced house, "because people only ever really want to talk about Dad, which I find utterly tedious."

Stairway to Heaven
Rolf was touring in Australia, and while in Sydney he was asked to appear on Andrew Denton's TV comedy show, "The Money Or The Gun", to sing "Stairway to Heaven". Apparently the show had already featured about 19 different versions of the song, and nearing the end of the series, they wanted Rolf to sing one. So Rolf, who had never heard the song before, performed this (based on "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport") having only seen the sheet music! A couple of years later the song was included on a compilation, and then released as a single, and went from strength to strength, reaching number 7 in the UK. (Plant - Page) Warner Chappel (P) 1993
Rolf's spoken asides are in (brackets) [Spoken:]
There's an old Australian stockman, er, rock band
Trying, but dying
They get themselves up onto their collective elbows
Revert to their sixties instrumentation
And they try again There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
All together now, and she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if those stores are all closed

Six White Boomers
This song was written in Perth, Western Australia, in 1960. Rolf was working at a television station with an American named John D Brown and, thinking it was crazy to be singing Christmas songs about snow and ice when the temperature was around 100 degrees Farenheit, they wrote this song.
Arr. Johnnie Spence - Produced by George Martin Early on one Christmas Day, a Joey Kanga-roo
Was far from home and lost in a great big zoo
Mummy, where's my mummy, they've taken her a-way
We'll help you find your mummy son, hop on the sleigh
[Verse:]
Up beside the bag of toys, little Joey hopped
But they had'nt gone far when Santa stopped
Un-harnessed all the reindeer and Joey wondered why
Then he heard a far off booming in the sky
[Chorus:] Six white boomers, snow white boomers Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun Six white boomers, snow white boomers .. On his Aus-tra-lian run Pretty soon old Santa began to feel the heat Took his fur-lined boots off to cool his feet Into one popped Joey, feeling quite OK

Star of 'Animal Hospital' in fantastic reception shocker! You better believe it folks. So sick are we by now of worthy young men with overdrive pedals and Hendrix fixations that old Rolf's entertaining, inclusive set, comes as a welcome breath of fresh air - well as fresh as the air can get three days into the slop fest. Only a man in his 70s could preview his Xmas single in June, 'Never Mind The Blisters, Rudolph' a plea for an end to animal cruelty and forced labour - possibly. 'Waltzing Matilda' warms up our voices before 'Two Little Boys' leaves the entire main stage audience with a tear in its collective eye.
