... local bookstores Whistlejacket While investigating his mentor's life and death, Michael, a voyeuristic fashion photographer, travels through a Dionysian landscape where sex is daydream, women and horses share the same erotic power, and perversity is the rule. In his search, Michael uses photographs and paintings to visualize the past and thereby expose a family's decadent legacy of sex, lies, and betrayal. An inventive mix of biography, history, erotica, and classic whodunit, Whistlejacket is John Hawkes at his best as he blurs the distinction between death and desire, image and language, art and morality.
"Brilliantly sustained. . . . Whistlejacket maintains John Hawkes's position as the most consistently interesting writer at work in the United States today." New York Times "A terrifying fox hunt that resembles Picasso's 'Guernica,' a funeral that only Francis Bacon could paint, dentistry as imagined by Hieronymus Boschthese are just a few of the disquieting pleasures of this fast-paced metaphysical thriller by John Hawkes, who must be ranked as America's greatest living visionary."Edmund White

By Mark Hamstra John Hawkes It is an unfortunate irony that the very social and cultural wasteland compelling writers like John Hawkes to write disturbing and difficult novels also robs them of a general audience with the time and patience to read, puzzle, and understand them. Hawkes died in 1998, the same year as William Gaddis , a contemporary who also wrote complex, labyrinthine novels. Both writers were frequent targets for hostile criticism, often accused of writing "strange" books which pursued originality to the point of obscurity. (Though it might be useful to note that strangeness and originality, according to Harold Bloom in The Western Canon , are the two elements that secure the future readership of a writer's work.)
Hawkes' books attempt to portray the dark cisterns beneath everyday reality. His work challenges readers to wade into the black waters of the violent, the comic, and the sexual; to sift through elements embedded in the past, with the ghosts of regret death existing side by side with hope for the future. Although these themes may be universal, what makes Hawkes remarkable is the presentation of these motifs and his ostensibly paradoxical technique: his prose is feverish yet stylized, his novels are seemingly chaotic yet structured, and even his characters delicately dance between reality and metaphor. He also experiments with time and space, both in his narrative technique as well as in the consciousness of his very characters. Indeed, this relationship is very important, as

"Once our greatest living stylist, now no longer with us." Hawkes Scrapbook: A New Taste in Literature An (auto) biographical anthology of John Hawkes, who was a retired Professor of English from Brown University. Professor Hawkes is the author of almost a dozen novels and many other works. The Scrapbook includes biographical information written by him and from other sources, data on his family history, and many bibliographic citations. Hawkes creates complex fantasies with great stylistic discipline, exploring the border between dream and reality. "I want to try to create a world, not represent it," he noted. Another novelist wrote in 1971 in The New York Times that he is "feasibly our best writer." To use a poor pun: Hawkes is a "novel novelist." John Hawkes QUI EST JOHN HAWKES? i I first discovered John when I saw him in the X-Files episode Milagro (#6x18) playing Phillip Padgett, a writer obsessed with Scully. I have watched every X-File episode ever made, and I've never been so intrigued with a guest actor. Nope, not even Steve Railsback.  So, I checked out some of the other stuff he's done.  And I was impressed with pretty much all of it.  And then I noticed I could find almost nothing on the web about him. So begat my little page. Umm, so anyway, John has been in several films - most notably The Perfect Storm (he played Mike "Bugsy" Moran), and several television shows.  His filmography (courtesy www.imdb.com ) is available  right over there ->
Other than that, it is difficult to the extreme to find information about John Hawkes, so if you've got some inside scoop, please, please let me know. Thanks! Practicing Post-Modernism:
    The Example of John Hawkes
    by John M. Unsworth
    Contemporary Literature 32.1 (Spring 1991)
John Hawkes provides an excellent opportunity for such an inquiry, for several reasons. Discovered by Albert Guerard in 1947 and vigorously promoted by him in the years that followed, Hawkes was the first American "post-modern" author to gain notoriety. Writers of Hawkes's generation were, in turn, the first in this country to spend their entire creative lives in the academy: they have used that position with unprecedented success to shape and control critical reception, especially through the mechanism of the interview. At the same time, as Guerard's influence on Hawkes demonstrates, criticism can shape a writer's understanding of what is important in his or her creative work. There are two places to look for evidence of the kind of influence I am discussing: in the author's work and in representations of that work, either by the author or by the critics. In what follows, I will look at a short story by Hawkes which encodes a drama of authorial influence on critical reading, and along with it I will consider a critical essay on the story which enacts the part scripted for the reader in that drama. Thereafter, I will take a broader sampling of Hawkes's critical fortunes, with an eye not only to the migration of descriptive language from author to critic, via the interview, but also to the genesis of that language in the writing of Hawkes's earliest and most influential critic, Albert Guerard.
