D OCTOR PARCIVAL was a large man with a drooping mouth covered by a yellow mustache. He always wore a dirty white waistcoat out of the pockets of which protruded a number of the kind of black cigars known as stogies. His teeth were black and irregular and there was something strange about his eyes. The lid of the left eye twitched; it fell down and snapped up; it was exactly as though the lid of the eye were a window shade and someone stood inside the doctor`s head playing with the cord. Doctor Parcival had a liking for the boy, George Willard. It began when George had been working for a year on the Winesburg Eagle and the acquaintanceship was entirely a matter of the doctor`s own making. In the late afternoon Will Henderson, owner and editor of the Eagle, went over to Tom Willy`s saloon. Along an alleyway he went and slipping in at the back door of the saloon began drinking a drink made of a combination of sloe gin and soda water. Will Henderson was a sensualist and had reached the age of forty-five. He imagined the gin renewed the youth in him. Like most sensualists he enjoyed talking of women, and for an hour he lingered about gossiping with Tom Willy. The saloon keeper was a short, broad-shouldered man with peculiarly marked hands. That flaming kind of birthmark that sometimes paints with red the faces of men and women had touched with red Tom Willy`s fingers and the backs of his hands. As he stood by the bar talking to Will Henderson he rubbed the hands together. As he grew more and more excited the red of his fingers deepened. It was as though the hands had been dipped in blood that had dried and faded.

Pacers walk that lonesome valley
By Steve Hammer
You got to walk that lonesome valley.
You got to go by yourself.
You gotta go by yourself.
In a grueling two weeks of basketball that both energized and demoralized a city, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of words were written and spoken about the Pacers and the Lakers. One quote stands out to me. It was from Biff Henderson, the lovable Late Show cast member, as he was swigging a Mountain Dew in the press room at Conseco Fieldhouse. He was pointing to newspaper cutouts of The Star the day after the Pacers beat the Knicks. Our championship was our victory over the Knicks. Or at least it will have to do for at least one more year. We knew then that it was hopeless. But, in the short term, it stings. Holy man Talking with a holy man, they say, can help you deal with loss. And, totally by accident, approaching the locker room of the Lakers, I found myself standing face-to-face with the Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson. My hero. My personal champion. The only person I trust to be president. I awkwardly asked him if he was a big Lakers fan.

Biff Henderson's evolution from stage manager to star began one morning in 1980, when David Letterman was in the midst of his own transformation from wise-cracking comic to talk-show host. NBC had the gap-toothed guy, a favorite guest on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show," hosting a morning variety show, which was a strange place for Letterman's late-night sense of humor. Henderson, a Durham native, was stage managing in the wings when Letterman pushed the startled stage manager toward the spotlight. Unflappable even back then, Henderson was heading for his mark to do a joke when Letterman shoved him aside at the last minute. "No, I wasn't nervous," Henderson said recently in a phone interview. "There's nothing to be afraid of when you don't know what you're doing." Three series on two networks later, Biff and Dave are still together, and Biff's sojourns into the spotlight have become more frequent and more popular. Henderson receives lots of fan mail and has his own Web site

Healthy Restaurant Dining
Monday, May 7, 2001 - 12:00 AM ET
CBS Biff Henderson Bryant Gumbel reports. NEW YORK When the goal is to shed unwanted pounds, selecting an entree from a restaurant menu can feel like navigating a minefield blindfolded. Just about every food listed appears to threaten the waistline. How to dine out and eat what you like is this week's lesson from Dr. Louis Aronne for the participants of The Early Show's Weight Off series. The Late Show's Biff Henderson visited us on Monday since he is most likely to benefit from Dr. Aronne's advice, as he works on losing a total of 20 lbs. Weight Off 2001 Weight Off Home Follow The Plan Experts And Participants Grocery List Recipes Menu And Food Exchange List Weekly Tips Quizzes and Evaluations E-mail Your Entry Biff's television job calls for him to eat out several times a week and attend industry banquets, and, for him, dining out was his very own food lover's paradise. But since he joined The Weight Off band of six participants, he has modified his eating program. Biff started the program three days after the other five participants, so he has been playing catch-up. Thus far, he has lost 10 lbs. and says he feels quite good about it.
