Sonja Henie
Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie first skated in the Olympics in 1924 when she was 12 years old, and was the world skating champion for ten years. She won gold medals in Olympic women's singles figure skating in 1928, 1932 and 1936. An innovator on the ice, Henie drew on her studies of ballet and introduced dance-like skating techniques (routines up to that point had consisted mostly of technical exhibitions) and more revealing costumes than had been in favor in the past. Audiences were captivated, and figure skating's popularity grew along with hers. Her movie-star looks and grace led her to Hollywood and a second career as an actress. Henie appeared in 11 feature films, starring alongside such leading men as Adolphe Menjou, Tyrone Power and Ray Milland. She also performed in various "Ice Revue" tours following her retirement from Olympic competition. Henie enjoyed other sports as well, and was an accomplished skier and tennis player. She became a naturalized United States citizen in 1941, although she later returned to Norway to found an art center. Henie died of leukemia at age 57. Related links:

Henie died on October 12, 1969. The Sonja show was playing The Baltimore Armory in 1952. While we were rehearsing for the show we watched a work crew erecting some extra bleacher seats. We noticed they were working very clumsily and didn't look very skilled but figured they knew what they were doing. Were we ever wrong! As the overature for the show began (around 8 PM) we heard a strange screeching sound and then a roar. The roar was the sound of a thousand seats, filled with people, crashing 18 feet to the floor! They were sitting in the bleachers that had been hastily built during our rehearsal! The screeching was the nails being pulled out of the wood!

Sonja Henie Ten world championships, four Olympic appearances, and three consecutive Olympic gold medals
By John Gettings Sonja Henie was already showing signs of her dancing potential in her home country of Norway when she was given her first pair of ice skates at age six.
The dazzling figure-skating career that followed would be highlighted by ten world championships
Henie was just 12 when she made her first Olympic appearance at the 1924 Winter Games in Chamonix, France. Already her country's defending national champion, Henie figured the Games would be a good learning experience. She placed third in the free skate and eighth overall.
With her family's backing, Henie studied ballet in London and built the foundation for a routine that added graceful choreography to her skating.
