THE WAR LORD is an accurate account of medieval life during the 11th century. This period piece is based on Lesley Steven's play: 'THE LOVERS' and is a fine example of cinema's ability to recreate long-gone eras. The period detail is exact, from costuming to the imposing tower-castle.
SYNOPSIS:

It brought forth knowing guffaws from the audience as he instructed his son to extricate a long-hidden object. It was, of course, a gun. NRA president Heston intoned, ``What you hold in your hand is proof of their (man's) power against which our strength means nothing. It has the force of 100 spears. I warn you their (man's) ingenuity goes hand in hand with their cruelty. For 50 years, the Harvard Law School Forum has been sponsoring speeches by luminaries ranging from Fidel Castro to Gerald Ford to Dr. Ruth. Sometimes the speeches have generated a bit of media coverage, sometimes not. But one given last month by Charlton Heston has taken on a life of its own. Heston, the actor and conservative activist, delivered a stem-winderto about 200 listeners about "a cultural war that's about to hijack your birthright to think and say what resides in your heart." "He knew he was coming to a liberal environment, and clearly a group of his listeners was conservative and another was more liberal," said David Christopherson, president of the forum. "About half respectfully challenged him during the questions. It generated a lot of debate around the campus. But what's happened caught us off-guard." What happened was Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show. On March 15, Limbaugh read the entire speech on the air, only to find himself bombarded with thousands of requests for a copy of it. The same thing happened at Harvard Law. "We couldn't keep up with all the requests," said Mike Chmura at Harvard. "It really didn't have legs and might have been forgotten if Mr.Limbaugh hadn't decided to deliver it."

DeMille. DeMille was the perfect director to render all the glamour and flashy hoopla of the circus, nor is it surprising to find Charlton Heston, whose career was filled with spectacular, sprawling films, in the starring role here.
SYNOPSIS
'THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH'.
THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH is a superb DeMille production which was carefully and expensively constructed, filmed with love in every frame. Its 153 minutes are loaded with charm and excitement, and the cast is outstanding, particularly Heston. Though Betty Hutton overacts a bit (as usual) in her role, Cornel Wilde is perfect as the egotistical aerialist, James Stewart is touching as the tragic clown, and Gloria Grahame makes an effectively sexy, manipulative circus lady. DeMille also throws in a few amusing cameo appearances by planting Paramount celebrities in his circus audience. In one scene Bob Hope and Bing Crosby are gaping spectators, looking up anxiously at the aerial stunts while nervously munching peanuts.
The railroad wreck was done in miniature but was so well constructed that it appears quite real. In other scenes, DeMille was extremely inventive, mounting his cameras on pulleys and having them slide up and down the support poles of the main tent. The resulting film, both authentic and awesome, earned

TOUCH OF EVIL is a dark, perverse thriller about moral compromise and the price of corruption.
SYNOPSIS:
TOUCH OF EVIL
Directing his first film in America since 1948's MACBETH , Welles was originally just supposed to act in TOUCH OF EVIL.
The misunderstanding that led to this bizarre and twisted masterpiece began when Heston read a script based on the novel 'Badge of Evil.' Hearing that Welles was involved, and assuming that his involvement meant as actor and director, Heston told producer Zugsmith that he would love to do the project. Rather than lose Heston, Zugsmith managed to get Universal to agree to let Welles direct, on the condition that he could also rewrite.
This nightmarish descent into dark entertainment has so much weirdness going on it's amazing. Heston skips the Mexican accent for this role, but wears a pencil-line mustache with dark makeup instead. His acting is excellent and he has a true grasp of the role. Marlene Dietrich, reprising her golden earrings-drag, smoking cigars and scraping pots, almost steals the show. Complete with German accent and huge, light eyes at half mast, she's the most surreal excuse for a Mexican gypsy you've ever seen. Janet Leigh is at her most peversely innocent, and besides lots of grisly scenes (a murder by Welles the worst), there are a slew of outrageous cameos, including appearances by Welles crony Joseph Cotten, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Dennis Weaver, Ray Collins, Keenan Wynn and, wildest of all, Mercedes McCambridge as a butch biker.

BEN-HUR A brawny, virile classical actor whose physical presence, intelligent performances and authoritative voice have left a distinctive mark on the last fifty years of Hollywood filmmaking, Charlton Heston's career has encompassed roles in numerous historical epics, period dramas, and Hollywood adventure films as well as such roles behind the camera as writer and director. Though he was honored over 40 years ago with the Academy Award (for his performance in BEN-HUR (1959)), Heston continues to be called upon to lend his voice or still-imposing stature to roles which, even to this day, no one larger has emerged to fill. One of the better biographical films made by Hollywood, THE PRESIDENT'S LADY stars Charlton Heston as Andrew Jackson, whom the actor also played in THE BUCCANEER . Heston in full make up actually looked quite a lot like Andrew Jackson in his later years.
SYNOPSIS:
THE BUCCANEER to study the character of Jackson. DeMille also let me look at some research materials he had. He was very kind about it . In fact, he loaned me a combination research item and good luck piece; a lovely little wax statuette of Jackson, about ten inches high, which I kept in my dressing room while we were shooting THE PRESIDENT'S LADY THE BUCCANEER *NOTE: SEE PICTURE BELOW
AWARDS: THE PRESIDENT'S LADY received Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction-Set Direction.
MY COMMENTS:
Susan Hayward gives an outstanding performance, as usual. Ben Nye's terrific makeup job helped her to successfully aged from 18 to 61. Nye also did a very convincing job on Heston's make up to help him age during the story. Pictures of Jackson compaired to Chuck in make-up almost look a like! Susan and Chuck had a 'chemistry' between them that made their romantic scenes some of the tenderest in Chuck's movie career. Chuck gives a wonderful performance as a young 'Jackson' which ages some 40 years during the movie. Chuck did an excellent job with this role and it was very evident that he had done tons of research on Jackson to fully grasp the role. As a love story between two very famous people

Immanuel Kant

Narrated by Charlton Heston
Hear a sample from Plato Before Kant , philosophers had debated for centuries whether knowledge is derived from experience or reason. Kant says that both views are partly right and partly wrong, that they share the same error; both believe that the mind and the world, reason and nature are separated from one another. Building on an insight from Hume , Kant says that our reason organizes our sense perception to produce knowledge. The mind is a creative force for understanding the manifold of new, unconceptualized sense impressions with which the world bombards us. And Kant says we cannot know the "thing-in-itself" - the object apart from our conceptualization of it. Kant's "transcendental" philosophy transcends the question of "what" we know to ask "how" we know it. He seeks to discover the rules or laws of the understanding; he concludes that we can never transcend the limits of possible experience, declaring "I have had to limit reason to make room for faith." For Kant, space and time are not external realities; they are tools of the mind in organizing experience. And we are unable to determine the ultimate nature of some things, such as whether humans have free will.

Review Summary "This western is an exciting epic that holds you on the edge of your seat, right to its end! A William Wyler directed movie with a superb cast of characters, its story takes place on the beautiful expanse of the western "Big Country". Gregory Peck arrives on the scene from the Navy, in pursuit of his love, the daughter of the biggest ranch, and the biggest ego to go with it. He is unaware of the continual war taking place between her father and family rivals who continually battle out their use of the water for their livestock. Peck's rival, a cowboy who was on the scene before him and who loves his woman, continues to make him prove his honor by insulting him. Events gradually heat up to the point where shoot-outs and bullets fly. Honor is not restored, until the end when Peck finally takes on the "big country" and a new love. Lots of cowboy shoot outs and excitement make this epic a western never to be forgotten! "

World Wide Web Fights Presents
The Scenario Once again, a group of foolish Americans has resurrected the great mummy Imhotep. This time, however, Imhotep has advanced unchecked due to Brendan Fraser's obligations to Dudley Dooright 2: Lost In Regina . Controlling the invincible Army of Anubis, Imhotep cannot be slowed by even the mightiest militaries of the world. After a bloody conquest of Egypt, he moves north into Israel where he enslaves its people so that they may build monuments unto him. Their first task is to build a temple in his honor. Rather quickly (zombie taskmasters can be very motivational), the Temple of Imhotep is constructed on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Instead of an altar, however, two golden thrones are placed inside, where Imhotep and his bride, Anck Su Namun, may sit as King and Queen (or perhaps as God and Goddess?) of the World. Numerous statues bearing Imhotep's image are placed throughout. A great coronation ceremony is now taking place. The celebration is interrupted, however, when clouds begin to gather on a nearby hillside. Lightning and thunder lash out, and an eerie reddish light begins to glow. After a few moments, a lone figure comes down the hillside. He has long white hair and beard, bears the colors of a Levite, and carries a long walking staff. His pace is deliberate, and leads him to the Temple gate. Two zombie guards thrust their axes down to block his way. Intrigued, Imhotep waves his hand, ordering his guards to let him pass. He is interested to hear what such a bold man has to say.

MAJOR DUNDEE is one of the more exciting westerns Heston has made during his career, all filmed entirely on location in Mexico. This movie has a host of famous actors besides Charlton Heston and Richard Harris in lead roles. They are: Jim Hutton, James Coburn, Warren Oates and all time favorite 'cowboys' Ben Johnson and Slim Pickens
SYNOPSIS:
The action in MAJOR DUNDEE is hot and heavy, with excitement and some violence at every corner, which is director Peckinpah's specialty. The lead actors Heston and Harris are strong and convincing in their roles, and solid character actorsJohnson, Oates, and Pickensadd to the enjoyment of this film. Coburn rides along as the scout-this film made before his 'OUR MAN FLINT' stardom began. Hutton is a great comic relief and is wonderful with his 'slap-stick'. Senta Berger, the Austrian born beauty in her second American film, is good also. MAJOR DUNDEE
and Heston made the news when Heston, in a unprecedented move, gave up his salary of $200,000 for sticking up for the project's controversial director, Sam Peckinpah and the original script by Harry Julian Fink and Oscar Saul. The studio wanted to scrap the movie before it was completed. Heston is reported to have said about the incident that he really didn't think the studio would take him up on his offer to give up his salary, but 'they' did! Heston later said he does not regret his loyalty to Peckinpah and standing firm for his principles.
