Alfred Hitchcock Presents
Tv Show Description:
Just like his movies, this show definitely kept you "on the edge of your seat"! Drama, sus-
pense, horror, and often an element of comedy mixed in. In every episode, you knew that
something bad was going to happen - but when? In the typical Hitchcock style, you were
"teased" with danger several times in many episodes before the actual "horror" struck!
Don't watch this one alone!
Alfred Hitchcock Presents
Trivia:
The idea for the tv show was not Hitchcock's. It was that of Lew Wasserman the (then) president of MCA.
Hitchcock selected the 40 or so scripts to be used each season from only about 100 given to him.
were colorized and used for the new program.
Hitchcock only directed 18 episodes of the series himself.

In the summer of 1939, David Selznick brought alfred hitchcock to Hollywood. alfredhitchcock was born in 1899 to a middleclass London family.
    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/database/hitchcock_a.html
O n December 10, 1938, David O. Selznick burned down Atlanta. On the back of his Culver City studio, Selznick had begun filming what would be his and Hollywood's greatest triumph, GONE WITH THE WIND. Selznick was just thirty-six years old and already a legend. He had run a major studio before the age of thirty and created his own studio by the time he was thirty-three. With a harsh and controlling demeanor, he dominated every film he made. In a town of Mayers, Zanucks, and Goldwyns, David Selznick was king. But one of his most lasting contributions would have nothing to do with his grand, southern epic. Instead, it would be bringing to America a rotund, quiet director who was the shining star of British cinema. In the summer of 1939, David Selznick brought Alfred Hitchcock to Hollywood. George Cukor 's DAVID COPPERFIELD and DINNER AT EIGHT. Selznick longed for his independence and in 1936 formed Selznick International. Within three years he had secured his place among the elite of Hollywood with the production of one of its greatest films, GONE WITH THE WIND. While finishing the film, Selznick hired an English director who was looking to make a go of it in Hollywood. The two didn't work together again until 1945, with their hit SPELLBOUND. Though Hitchcock had more experience and notoriety in Hollywood by this time, his relationship with Selznick remained a struggle. Both men had different ways of making movies, and both believed they deserved control of the picture. In the end, Selznick won, but it would be the last time. Earning both men Oscars, SPELLBOUND marked a change in Hitchcock's career and in the future of Hollywood. Nearing the end of his contract with Selznick, Hitchcock had become a major force in the movie industry. Hitchcock's notoriety and his ability to independently create successful films of substance signaled, for many, the rise of the director and the decline of the producer. Though the studios and producers would remain, after Hitchcock it would be the director whose artistic vision mattered.

Hitchcock's career as a director spanned over 50 years, from the silent films of the 1920s to FAMILY PLOT (1976). When Alfred Hitchcock received the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1979, he dedicated it to his wife Alma Reville, "a film editor, a script writer, the mother of his daughter and a talented cook." "Subjective treatment, putting the audience in the mind of the character, is, to me, the purest form of the cinema. I suppose Rear Window is the best example of it." (Hitchcock in Who the Devil Made It by Peter Bogdanovich, 1997) Alfred Hitchcock was born in London as the son of William Hitchcock, a poultry dealer and fruit importer. He was educated at a Jesuit school, London's St. Ignatius College, and the School of Engineering and Navigation, where he studied mechanics, electricity, acoustics, and navigation. He then worked for a telegraph company and took art courses at the University of London. In 1920 he entered the film industry as designer of titles for Hollywood's Famous Players-Lasky (Paramount). When the Famous Players studios was taken over by a British production company, Hitchcock become an assistant director, working also as screenwriter and art director in several films. His first assignment as a director come in 1925. Next year he married Alma Reville, a film editor and script girl, who would later collaborate with him in several films. In 1926 Hitchcock directed THE LODGER, which gained a good commercial success. It also marked his debut as an extra. The trademark of Hitchcock's personal appearaces continued in later productions. In 1929 he directed BLACKMAIL, the first British feature film with synchronous sound.

by Dr. Kenneth Rivers page 1 of 4
A tense scene from the final moments of Bon Voyage.
A t the peak of his career, Alfred Hitchcock, renown for his British and Hollywood-made suspense cinema, diverged from his usual formula to make two French language adventure movies designed as World War II propaganda films. Made in 1944, Aventure malgache (which translates as "Madagascan Adventure") and Bon Voyage remained virtually unseen until a 50th anniversary re-release and subsequent video distribution. These two short films may well be the most challenging films to assess in the entire Hitchcock filmography, for their overt goal of propaganda establishes a set of expectations alien to Hitchcock's suspense films, thus creating conflicts for the filmmaker and the critics alike. By the mid-1940s, Hitchcock was on top of the movie world. With movies such as Rebecca and Foreign Correspondent , he had conquered Hollywood and become world renowned. When the British government, specifically the British Ministry of Information, decided to produce a pair of war propaganda dramas to help raise the spirits of people in Occupied France, Alfred Hitchcock was the first choice to direct the dramas. Having already edited a pair of English war documentaries (that were directed by others) in 1941, Hitchcock considered such work to be his patriotic duty, and he immediately accepted the offer from Sidney Bernstein of the Ministry's Film Division. Of course, a French director could have just as easily, if not more easily, directed these films. But the British Information Service aimed to control the project by placing a British director in charge, just as Prime Minister Winston Churchill was, at the time, exercising every imaginable strategy to control the exiled General Charles de Gaulle.
