" Movie acting may not have a certain kind of glory as true art, but it is damn hard work."
William Holden Born: William Franklin Beedle, Jr. Biography:
Born William Franklin Beedle, Jr. on April 17, 1918, William Holden made his film debut it 1938's Prison Farm. He had his first major role in Golden Boy (1939), where he played a boxer-violinist opposite screen legend Barbara Stanwyck, who would prove to be a major influence on him for the rest of his life. He was a contract player for Paramount Pictures, and appeared in numerous productions in the boy-next-door types of roles.
He joined the Air Force and fought in World War II. After the war, he began to attract the attention of moviegoers by taking on considerably more challenging roles. In 1950, he appeared in two critically-acclaimed features which were both nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards: Born Yesterday, opposite Judy Holliday (who won that year's Academy Award for Best Actress); and Sunset Boulevard, as Joe Gillis, the young writer who romances Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). For the latter role, he received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
"I was waiting, and hoping for, and struggling toward that particular movie that would demonstrate just how individual I could be, as an actor and as man, and finally I found it."

William Holden
A dependable leading man whose career peaked in the 1950's when he made a third of his seventy films, William Holden received three Best Actor Academy Award nominations over the course of his career and won his only statuette in 1953 for his role as the cynical sergeant in Billy Wilder 's World War II prisoner of war drama, STALAG 17. In Holden's first starring role, with Barbara Stanwyck in GOLDEN BOY (1939), he played a musically-inclined prize-fighter. Also in 1939, Holden played George Raft's younger brother opposite gangster Humphrey Bogart in INVISIBLE STRIPES.
Holden received his first Best Actor nomination for his role as a struggling writer turned gigolo opposite Gloria Swanson's portrayal of fading actress Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder 's SUNSET BLVD. Besides Holden's nomination, the film received ten more including one for Best Picture of 1950. In the third of Holden's four films with director Wilder , SABRINA, he played Humphrey Bogart 's younger, playboy brother, David Larrabee, opposite Audrey Hepburn as the blossoming chauffeur's daughter in this 1954 romantic comedy which received six Oscar nominations.

Review Summary "Joe Gillis (Holden) gets lost in the eerie, weird, dank world of former silent film star, Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). She waits patiently; like a black widow ready for the kill, to discover..to be rediscovered. (It's the last time he'll run rampant without having a destination!) Norma's world doesn't extend much past the front door lately and she's living in another world anyway. Holden gets trapped into playing giggolo for this poor, pathetic, wrinkled wench who's catered to by Max, her ex-husband; butler/director combo. What a strange movie...if you have nothing to do for a couple of hours...check it out...I'm amazed everytime. Great acting, cameo's with Jack Webb, Cecil B. DeMille. "Alright Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up" a classic. "

I n 1972, five years before driving to Missoula, Montana, to interview Richard Hugo, I was a student in the Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado. I was driving into Denver with my friend Reg Saner to conduct a Poets-in-the-Schools program. We had turned off U.S. 36 onto I-25 and were heading straight toward downtown Denver when, in one of those moments James Hillman discusses in The Soul's Code, dictated, perhaps, by one's daemon, I realized what I should do with my studies — with my life. I should drop the pathetic idea of doing a thesis in medieval literature to please some father figure and instead do a thesis in twentieth-century American literature, about William Stafford. My thesis would be immediately publishable, for there were no books about him. Best of all, I could drive out to Lake Oswego and interview him for the book. I could actually meet him.
In his book Alone with America

HOLDEN, WILLIAM CURRY (1896-1993). Curry Holden, historian, archeologist, and director of the Museum of Texas Tech University, qv was born in Coolidge, Texas, on July 19, 1896, one of three sons of Robert Lee and Grace (Davis) Holden. In 1899 the Holden and Davis families moved to Colorado City, and in 1907 the Holdens moved to a farm near Rotan, where Curry finished high school in 1914. He obtained a teacher's certificate from Stamford Junior College in the summer of 1914, but failed to find a teaching position, being told he was "too young and too spindly." In 1915 he took over the Pleasant Valley one-teacher school, with forty-seven students in nine classes. He organized a literary club and basketball teams. In April he took his students by wagon to the county seat for an Interscholastic meet. His students entered every event, including athletics, and won the county championships. Holden was inspired by a speech given by Professor Joseph A. Hill qv qv became his mentor. From 1923 to 1929 Holden alternated college with teaching. He was a history instructor at the University of Texas (1924, 1927, 1929), and briefly taught at Southwest Texas State Teachers College. He took graduate courses at the University of Colorado (summer 1925) and at the University of Chicago (summer 1927). He earned three degrees at the University of Texas: B.A. (1923), M.A. (1924), and Ph.D. (1928).
