There is an Arabic story which paints a vivid picture of what every Middle Eastern farmer must have imagined. The story goes something like this:
When Allah was creating the world, he entrusted all the stones to 2 angels, each with one bag full. As the angels were flying over Palestine, one of the bags broke and spilled out onto this tiny land half the stones intended for the whole world!
No matter how much I complained about picking stones on my parents’ farm, I really don’t think that I was nearly so badly off as one who could claim this story as part of their folk lore. To say that the land upon which Jesus walked was (and still is) rocky is an obvious understatement. Soil-type, as we know, has an important impact upon agriculture. And agriculture itself relates intimately to the religion and the literature of the Bible. In the Gospel of Matthew, the parable of the soils is preceded by the run-in with the Pharisees over Jesus’ disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath, and it is followed by 2 more parables, one about weed seeds and another about the mustard seed. As we see, agriculture was not only a part of some significant holy laws, it also was a story-lesson by which truths were taught. In Matthew’s Gospel, the parable of the soils marks a shift in the location and audience for Jesus’ teaching. Prior to this he had been preaching in the synagogues which automatically seemed to include verbal jousting with the Pharisees. Now Jesus preached out of doors to the crowds. Jesus spoke to his audience using illustrations and experience with which they were familiar, namely agriculture.

Vol. 10 No. 1 (January 2000) pp. 74-77. AN APPEALING ACT: WHY PEOPLE APPEAL IN CIVIL CASES by Scott Barclay. Evanston, Illinois: Northwestern University Press, The American Bar Foundation, 1999. 197 pp. Reviewed by William Haltom, Department of Politics and Government, University of Puget Sound. Page 75 begins here Professor Barclay's welcome reconsideration of an apparently reasonable but actually reductionist assumption promises to make academic attention to civil appeals more realistic. The assumption in dispute seems the essence of hard-eyed realism: those who appeal results of civil trials hope to win in a higher court what they have not won in lower court. This assumption might be more acceptable to Barclay if rephrased to state that appellants hope to gain in an appeals court what they suspect that they have not obtained at trial. Barclay shows that most civil litigants want to be treated fairly. If such litigants believe that they have a reasonable chance of securing fairness on appeal, they are likely to push for appeal. Barclay contrasts this version of rational decision-making with the prevalent view that litigants are motivated primarily by money to be won or other goods to be secured. Counterintuitive as the process-oriented view may seem, responses from

Health Mall Sponsored: Heart Failure? Trouble Focusing? New Hope for Speech Problems After Stroke By Laurie Barclay WebMD Medical News Reviewed By Gary Vogin, MD Email to a friend Printer-friendly version Sept. 6, 2001 What's the worst thing that could happen after a stroke? For many, it's losing the ability to speak or communicate being fully aware of what's happening, yet unable to express it. "It is enormously beneficial to improve language recovery after stroke," David Gladstone, MD, a stroke fellow in neurology at the University of Toronto in Canada, tells WebMD. Surprisingly, a drug related to speed, called dextroamphetamine, may bring new hope to these stroke victims, according to a study reported in the September issue of the journal Stroke "When paired with behavioral therapy, low-dose amphetamine accelerated return of language function after stroke in a small number of patients," researcher Delaina Walker-Batson, PhD, tells WebMD. In the first study of its kind, 10 of 12 patients receiving the drug 30 minutes before speech therapy improved significantly in language function, compared with only two of nine patients who took a placebo instead of the drug.
