A 99th Birthday Tribute to Bob Hope
We celebrate the 99th birthday of one of the world's most recognized and beloved entertainers on May 29th, 2002. Bob Hope is best known as a comedian, and as the guy who's always ready to fly off and entertain the troops. His longevity as a TV performer is remarkable. He's legendary among golfers , as well.
But Bob also had a long career as a comic movie actor, from 1934 to 1994. He appeared in over 80 films and TV series (including cameos), and while he has joked about never winning an Oscar (especially while emceeing the Academy Awards shows), he has actually won four honorary Oscars, plus the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. (In addition to more than 2,000 medals, awards, citations, and honorary doctorates he's received a Guinness world record!) He was even Knighted by Queen Elizabeth. Although he has become an American icon, Hope was actually born to an English father and a Welsh mother in Eltham, England on May 29, 1903, as Leslie Townes Hope. He and his parents came to the US in 1907. After achieving success in vaudeville and on Broadway as a singer, dancer, and comedian, and appearing in several films beginning in 1934 (the same year he married Dolores Reade), he finally landed his first big movie role in

THE USO TOURS In 1941 (during the height of the second World War), Bob Hope brought an extravagant USO show to March Feild in California - showcasing top Hollywood performers and dancing bathing beauties for the battlefield-bound troops. An overseas tour for combat troops followed. One memorable show was done impromptu on a tree stump for the marines that were headed for Guadalcanal - the next day, most of the boys in the audience that night were killed in that infamous, bloody battle. Xmas Specials! The Bob Hope Special was the longest running television series of all time. Vaudeville, radio and film comedian Bob Hope began his monthly and semi-monthly television specials in 1950 and they continued to be a regular feature of NBC's schedule until just recently, when Hope's failing health made filming them impossible. The wise-cracking comedian was one of the only radio and film stars to made a seamless transition into the new TV medium, and he did it by making each show a special.

Bob's Biography
For a man who played third billing to Siamese twins and trained seals, Bob Hope has become the most recognized profile and talent in the world. And, in the entire history of show business, no individual has traveled so far so often to entertain so many. Hope's entertainment persona has been evident in every decade of the 20th century from impersonating Charlie Chaplin in front of the firehouse in Cleveland in 1909, to celebrating an unprecedented 60 years with NBC in 1996. The fifth of seven sons, he was born Leslie Townes Hope in Eltham, England on May 29, 1903. His English father, William Henry Hope, was a stonemason his Welsh mother, Avis Townes Hope, an aspiring concert singer. In 1907, Leslie's father brought the family to Cleveland, Ohio. In 1920, by virtue of his father's naturalization, 'Bob' the name by which the world would later know him and his brothers became US citizens. (Bob Jokes, "I left England at the age of four when I found out I couldn't be king.")

Early Life
Vaudeville The Bill Moving On ... Faces of Bob Hope Bob Hope was among the 20,000 vaudeville performers working in the 1920s. Many of these performers were, like Hope, recent immigrants to America who saw a vaudeville career as one of the few ways to succeed as a "foreigner" in America. Throughout his extraordinary professional career of nearly seventy years, Bob Hope practiced the arts he learned in vaudeville and perpetuated variety entertainment traditions in stage musical comedy, motion pictures, radio, television, and the live appearances he made around the world in support of American armed forces. Today, the stage variety show is mostly a memory but its influence is pervasive thanks to the long and rich careers of vaudeville veterans like Bob Hope. F rances Langford was born Frances Newbern in Lakeland, Florida on April 4, 1914. As a young lady her talent was more towards the world of opera but a throat operation caused her singing career to take a different direction. She started performing on radio around 1930 and her first break came when bandleader Rudy Valee heard her singing on a Tampa radio station. He offered her a guest spot on his radio show. She then gained real prominence performing I'm In The Mood For Love in the 1935 movie Every Night At Eight starring Alice Fay and George Raft.
F ollowing this success she joined the Dick Powell radio show Hollywood Hotel and continued on it from 1935 to 1938. Starting in 1935 she appeared in 28 films including:
