An inspired casting gimmick, a wonderful mood, a grown-up love story - all this in The Fabulous Baker Boys, but the only thing anybody ever talks about is Michelle Pfeiffer on top of a piano. Granted, it's a showstopper: clad in a slinky dress, Pfeiffer rolls around on the Steinway while she purrs out a languid version of "Makin' Whoopee." Adding to the seductive vibe is the fact that she's not singing to the audience, but to the sullen piano player (Jeff Bridges) whose fancy she has captured.
Bridges and his real-life brother, Beau, play two lounge entertainers whose act has grown stale; they're not above doing "Feelings" for the tourist crowd. They've hired songbird Pfeiffer (who does her own sexy singing) to spice up the routine, a strategy that pays off in spades. The three actors are terrific, with the fabulous Bridges boys playing neatly off their own sibling rhythms.
Writer-director Steve Kloves captures the feel of second-rate Seattle clubs, and Dave Grusin's jazzy score keeps propelling the film forward. The story itself might have come from a 1940s romance, yet Kloves and his actors keep it unusually modern and thoughtful. And then there's Michelle Pfeiffer rolling around on top of a piano...

ROBERT E. HORTON (1875-1945)
Robert Elmer Horton was born May 18, 1875, in Parma, Michigan, and received a B.S degree from nearby Albion College in 1897. His professional work then began under the direction of his uncle, George Rafter, a prominent civil engineer who had earlier worked on the Erie Canal and was at the time concerned with its proposed deepening into a seaway. For better streamflow measurements, Rafter had commissioned Cornell laboratory weir studies for which Horton analyzed and summarized the results. This initial work was then considerably extended upon Horton's becoming New York District Engineer of the U.S. Geological Survey in 1900. The resulting publications became the standard work on the subject. Subsequent extensive stream gaging then directly led to his earliest work on the low flow or base flow of New York streams, recognizing that groundwater was the major component of this runoff, but how much incident rainfall could reach the aquifer depended on what Horton termed the infiltration capacity of the soil. Thus began his development and utilization of techniques for systematic separation into the several now familiar components of infiltration, evaporation, interception, transpiration, overland flow, etc., all of which owe their refinement and quantification primarily to Horton. After two decades of refinement, this masterful idea appeared in final form in a 95-page landmark paper just 1 month before his death on April 22, 1945. Horton summarized his results in four laws: the law of stream numbers, the law of stream lengths, limiting infiltration capacity, and the runoff-detention-storage relation. He showed that the most important factor for aqueous erosion was the minimum length of overland flow required to produce sufficient runoff to initiate erosion. While Horton had always considered himself to be a hydraulic engineer, it is interesting to note that this important paper was in fact published in the

Major Seth Adams, Wagonmaster, was a big, burly man. A veteran of the Civil War, he ran his Wagon Train with all the finesse of a bull in a china store. He blustered and bellowed from St. Joe to Sacramento.
Seth Adams hailed from Galena, Illinois, the same hometown as Bill Hawks. And another neighbor by the name of Ulysses S. Grant. After the battle of Shiloh, then General Grant gave Lt. Adams a battlefield promotion to Major. (See Multimedia page for a sound clip of this.)

For all the cantankerous outbursts, The Major was a fair man. And the emigrants looked to the Major to lead the Wagon Train safely across the Territories toward their new futures in the West. He was just the kind of fella people trusted.
From the Megan Herring Collection A constant thorn in the Major's side was the scout, Flint McCullough, played by Robert Horton. McCullough was young and head strong and very nearly as stubborn as the Major. Often the two would clash quite vocally. But whenever McCullough was late or the Major feared for him, you could see the worry on the older man's face, even he if didn't admit to it.
