    Houdini, Harry
American magician known for his escapes from chains, handcuffs, straitjackets, and padlocked containers. Houdini, Harry magic . He was able to free himself from handcuffs, ropes, locked trunks, and many types of bonds. Houdini attributed his magic to natural, physical effects and explained how many of his tricks were performed. His writings include Miracle Mongers and Their Methods (1920) and A Magician Among the Spirits (1924). Theater and Film, "The Great Houdini" gains wide publicity by executing an escape from London's Scotland Yard, becomes a main attraction at London's Alhambra Theatre, and begins a 4-year tour of the Continent. U.S. escape artist Ehrich Weiss, 26, has adopted the name Houdini from the French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin; having studied Robert-Houdin's work, his book The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin in 1908 will show that the Frenchman's dexterity was much exaggerated, and he will far surpass Robert-Houdin's reputation with feats such as having himself shackled in irons, locked into a roped and weighted box, dropped overboard from a boat, and emerging with a smile before baffled audiences.

    HARRY HOUDINI
Of all the magicians in the world, perhaps none became more famous than Harry Houdini. His life story has been the subject of countless books and numerous films, videos, television specials and theatrical stage plays. The mere sound of his name is often enough to conjuror up thoughts of magical meanderings.
    The Controversy Of HOUDINI'S BIRTH
The exact location and date of Houdini's birth is probably one of magic's greatest mysteries. Even the correct spelling of his real name seems to be questionable. Past inaccurate writings by so-called "Magic Historians" have made searching for facts a difficult task. The majority of findings seem to indicate that Harry Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss (Erik Weisz in the Hungarian spelling) in Budapest on March 24th, 1874. Later in his life, Houdini adopted his childhood hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin as his birthplace and April 6th as his birthday, for reasons brought on by his beloved mother Cecilia Weiss. Many believe she chose this American heritage for the young Ehrich to possibly instill in him the values of an American upbringing and citizenship. The First Performances Of HARRY HOUDINI
With friend Jack Hayman, the young duo occasionally performed together, regarding themselves as being a professional act, although semi-professional probably would have suited the newcomers better. Hayman was soon replaced with Houdini's younger brother Theodore, who had gained the nick-name "Dash" because of his appeal for over stylish haberdashery. With Dash, an act billed as "The Brothers Houdini" featured a box trick which was originally credited to the English illusionist John Nevil Maskelyne, which they called "Metamorphosis". The box trick which Maskelyne took credit for, was really a very clever invention of the spirit medium team called "The Davenport Brothers". When Houdini and Dash performed it, one brother would be bound and locked in the box, and within a matter of seconds, the two somehow switched places.
    The New Act THE HOUDINIS
The truth concerning where, when, and how Houdini met and married his wife Bess is unclear. It seems that the story of their courtship and marriage has been "romanced" by so many people, in so many books and films, so many times, that actual dates and factual situations have somehow gotten lost in the shuffle. Although Bess always celebrated their wedding anniversary on June 22nd (1894), her own account of who she claimed performed the marriage ceremony on this date has raised much speculation. Houdini Unmasked
    March 4, 1997
That and his paid-up membership in SAM, one of the performers' unions, helped his cause while uncovering the nuts and bolts of Houdini's stage career. Silverman believes that biographies need to be rewritten every quarter century anyway, so it would be just as well that he do it. After all, he grew up on 75th Street across the way from Erich Weiss' childhood home, and attended PS70 just like Erich/Harry's brother "Hardeen" did. The owner of Houdini's diaries refused to cooperate down to the last minute, when after a life threatening illness he granted the author one afternoon's access. As it turns out Silverman did so much research he couldn't afford to add his notes and citations into the actual bio. They have been published by a magic specialist in Washington DC under the title Notes To Houdini The author offered that Harry would have a field day if he were still alive, considering his pitched rivalry with spiritualists, amid the "looney enthusiasms of our not-so-New-Age." He tempered that with the observation that the man's performing schedule and stage shows were so punishing he was in constant pain of one sort or another. Because of his fear of failure he continued working under such conditions, but he wrote quite often in his personal diaries that he desperately wished he could quit show business. This may well be the underlying explanation for his death - not on stage, on Halloween, or from a body blow but from aggravated, too long ignored peritonitis.
