Introducing Italy's Version of Harry Houdini
At the age of 31, Italian magician and paranormal investigator Massimo Polidoro is the author of a half-a-dozen books, performs and lectures to standing-room-only crowds across the globe, runs a national organization of Italian skeptics, and is a hit with the Italian media. A life that may seem very complex to most is very simple to Polidoro: he is merely leading a life inspired by his boyhood hero Harry Houdini. Ithaca, N.Y.; August 31, 2000

March 24, 1874 or April 6, 1874 - October 31, 1926 There have been many rumors as to how Houdini died, but the most accurate and most plausible story was the told by Ruth Brandon, author of his biography, "The Life and Many Deaths of Harry Houdini." While touring in Canada and the northern United States, he had broken his ankle and it was causing him a lot of pain. As he was sitting around backstage nursing his foot, some students decided to visit him. One of the guys asked if it were true that he, Houdini, could resist any blow to his body. Houdini, who was writing a letter at the time and really not paying attention to the student, said "Yes." The young man began punching Houdini in the stomach. After four very hard blows, Houdini told him to stop. Later that evening he told his wife that he was experiencing great pain, but nevertheless refused to do anything about it. Harry always had this exaggerated idea about his own mortality; that he was above pain, injury and death. He was in Detroit doing a show and as the evening progressed so did the pain, up to the point where he had to do the unthinkable and stop the show. His wife, realizing the seriousness of the problem, insisted that he see a doctor. He was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and the doctor told him that he had to go to the hospital at once. Once again, Houdini ignored his doctor's advice and called his own personal physician in New York for advice. After a lot of convincing from his doctor in New York, he entered the hospital. When they performed surgery, his appendicitis had progress to something far worse, acute peritonitis. A few days later Houdini was dead.

Harry Houdini (1874-1926)
(b. Erik Weisz, then Ehrich Weiss) On March 18, 1910 whilst on a visit to Australia and in a Voisin biplane (purchased for US$5,000 in Hamburg, Germany prior to the trip - see Hamburg images below), Harry Houdini made the first controlled , powered flight of an airplane in Australia , at Digger's Rest in Victoria, Australia. The magic of flight, he later wrote, was in the "glorious thrill" of first adventure, and "not in minor modification which is perpetual in any art."
Harry Houdini, The Argus You may wish to download a 500 pixel or 1000 pixel version of the full image at right showing Houdini in the cockpit of the Voisin. Houdini, as well as being the first to make a controlled powered flight in Australia, also seems to be the first aviator here to have documented the event(s) on film. Houdini flies his Voisin Biplane in Sydney*, Australia, 1910 *Most probably at Rosehill Racecourse Download Movie 1
An alternate version of this sequence has also been uncovered which, although showing less of Houdini actually flying, does show an extended opening sequence of Houdini settling himself into the Voisin. Download Movie 2 Source 1: http://www.geocities.com/~houdinitribute

oudini died on Halloween, 1926 from peritonitis caused by a ruptured appendix. For years, it has been assumed that a blow to his abdomen from an overzealous college student killed him. Houdini was known for his tremendous physical condition, and could withstand blows to the abdomen by tensing his muscles. While performing in Canada, however, he was challenged by a student who didn't give him time to prepare for the punch. Whether or not the blow ruptured his appendix, it did not cause the appendicitis, which is a bacterial infection. Houdini met his untimely death on October 31, 1926, at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. (The most common misinformation about his death resulted from the 1953 Houdini movie starring Tony Curtis, in which Houdini dies during an underwater escape.) efore he died, Houdini instructed his brother Theo to burn his magic apparatus and collection of papers and other materials.
