Andy Serkis Talks LOTR

Xoanon
@ 2:22 pm EST
Film Effects with a Human Face Growing up in Rulsilp Manor, Andy Serkis always wanted to be in theatre, but saw his future behind the scenes. But after catching the acting bug at university and adding a string of key roles to his credit, he now plays arch fiend Gollum in next winter's much-heralded film of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Alan Hayes talked to him. Actor Andy Serkis has a peach of a role in the film they said could never be made. As Gollum in Peter Jackson 's The Lord of the rings, Mr Serkis, who grew up in Rulsilp Manor, has spent the last six months in New Zealand, 'halfway up volcanoes, in glacial streams and marshes', as well as in a special studio, creating the sort of effects that have finally made JRR Tolkien's epic possible. Shooting all three parts of the story simultaneously, Kiwi director Mr Jackson and his compatriot special-effects whizz-kids has wrestled the tale of sword, sorcery, fantastic creatures and little Hobbits to near completion, and part one is due on screen in December (a cartoon version of the early 1980's fizzled after only one book had been animated). Mr. Serkis will be back down under this summer for three months of post-production work, finishing the special effects which have made it all possible.

B. Reports by Non-attendees to the Annual Meeting Conservation of the Asiatic cheetah Acinonyx jubatus venaticus in Iran (submitted by Peter Jackson and presented by John Seidensticker) The Asiatic cheetah once ranged from Arabia to India, through Arabia, Iran, central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and, particularly in Iran and the Indian subcontinent, it was numerous. Cheetahs were easy to train, and rulers kept huge numbers for hunting gazelles. The Moghul Emperor of India, Akbar, is said to have had 1,000 at a time. It appears in many Persian and Indian miniature paintings. But by 1900 it was already headed for extinction in many areas. The last physical evidence of cheetahs in India was three shot (with two bullets) by the Maharajah of Surguja in 1947 in eastern Madhya Pradesh. By 1990, cheetahs appeared to survive only in Iran. Estimated to number over 200 during the 1970s, current estimates by Iranian biologist Hormoz Asadi put the number at 50 to 100. Following the Islamic Revolution of 1978, wildlife conservation was relegated to a back seat; reserves were invaded by livestock, which overgrazed the land, while both cheetahs and their principal prey, gazelles, were ruthlessly hunted, resulting in a rapid decline. As a result, the Asiatic cheetah is now listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals. Initial surveys by Asadi in the latter half of 1997 show that urgent action is required to rehabilitate wildlife populations, especially gazelles, and their habitat if the cheetah is to survive.

48. Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery"
Essay by peter Kosenko from the New Orleans Review.
http://www.netwood.net/~kosenko/jackson.html
A Reading of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" The following essay was published in the New Orleans Review in 1985 and was reprinted in the 1991 volume of Contemporary Literary Criticism (Gale Research) without my knowledge (so, before you consider reprinting this, ask me first). The original essay announced its critical approach in the title, but I would really rather that people read it first and see if it helps clarify the story for them. In her critical biography of Shirley Jackson, Lenemaja Friedman notes that when Shirley Jackson's story "The Lottery" was published in the June 28, 1948 issue of the New Yorker it received a response that "no New Yorker story had ever received": hundreds of letters poured in that were characterized by "bewilderment, speculation, and old-fashioned abuse." It is not hard to account for this response: Jackson's story portrays an "average" New England village with "average" citizens engaged in a deadly rite, the annual selection of a sacrificial victim by means of a public lottery, and does so quite deviously: not until well along in the story do we suspect that the "winner" will be stoned to death by the rest of the villagers. One can imagine the average reader of Jackson's story protesting: But we engage in no such inhuman practices. Why are you accusing us of this Admittedly, this response was not exactly the one that Jackson had hoped for. In the July 22, 1948 issue of the

53. DeadAlive/Braindead
None of the gore can be taken too seriously here and that is exactly what peter jackson was shooting for. It was because of this dark humor that peter jackson was able to go to extremes for this film.
http://www.houseofhorrors.com/deadalive.htm
Well, let me begin by giving Fangoria a little credit here. Without their extensive articles on this film and Peter Jackson, I might not have gone out and forcefully begged my video store to get a copy. Fangoria really pumped up this movie, describing it in gory detail. I just finished re-reading all the Fango articles and they weren't too bad, for once I can say good job. Why do I like this movie so much? You might be quick and say the zombies and you would be right to an extent, but it was really the dark humor that got me. The gore was great, the zombies were awesome, but it was the dark humor of this film that was the bloody eyeball that topped this horror sundae. It really reminded me of Evil Dead 2 , the humor was well balanced, but not taken too far. I never laughed so hard. Who would have thought that a lawnmower would become an essential killing weapon to use against zombies. A definite gore lovers delight. It may in fact be the goriest films I have ever seen, but only in a very funny way. Because of its outrageousness, none of the gore can be taken too seriously here and that is exactly what Peter Jackson was shooting for. It was because of this dark humor that Peter Jackson was able to go to extremes for this film. I became a fan of Peter Jackson because of this film. I have since gone out and rented "Bad Taste" which was a quirky sci-fi/horror film about an alien invasion. Then I rented "Meet the Feebles", otherwise known as "Muppets on Acid". This was one strange movie to say the least. If you like Dead Alive/ Braindead, than you own it to yourself to go out and rent these two films. I also thought the Frighteners was very good and that Jeffery Combs did an outstanding job. Peter Jackson is definitely a director to keep your eyes on.

57. Automatic RDF Metadata Generation For Resource Discovery

Automatic RDF Metadata Generation for Resource Discovery
Charlotte Jenkins, Mike Jackson, Peter Burden, Jon Wallis
University of Wolverhampton
Wulfruna Street, Wolverhampton
WV1 1SB, UK
Abstract
Automatic metadata generation may provide a solution to the problem of inconsistent, unreliable metadata describing resources on the Web. The Resource Description Framework (RDF [ ]) provides a domain-neutral foundation on which extensible element sets can be defined and expressed in a standard notation. This paper describes how an automatic classifier, that classifies HTML documents according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC [ ]), can be used to extract context sensitive metadata which is then represented using RDF. The process of automatic classification is described and an appropriate metadata element set is identified comprising those elements that can be extracted during classification. An RDF data model and an RDF schema are defined representing the element set and the classifier is configured to output the elements in RDF syntax according to the defined schema. Keywords: RDF, metadata, classification.

60. Peter Jackson
Kurzbiografie und Filmografie des Regisseurs.
http://www.ulfhednir.de/jackson.html
Peter Jackson Peter Jackson wurde am 31. Oktober in Pukerua Bay (North Island, Neuseeland) geboren.
