Submitted by: Rainey rainey@stlnet.com Review of GH III from the Myrtle Beach Times For Billy Joel, anyone who has followed his extensive career knows that the material from "The Bridge," "Storm Front" and "River of Dreams" was increasingly spotty when compared to the smashing compositions from "Turnstiles" or "The Stranger." Given that most of the material for "Volume III" was culled from those releases (and a bit of "An Innocent Man"), this single disc, 17-song set isn't nearly as noteworthy as Joel's initial two-disc hits set. Some songs, such as the passionately grainy duet with Ray Charles ("Baby Grand"), Joel's plaintive live-for-today credo ("This Is the Time") and his gently relatable explanation of bi-polar emotions ("I Go to Extremes"), will always be timeless. But too many others ("The Downeaster 'Alexa', " "All About Soul," "A Matter of Trust") are washed-out rock tripe that barely upholds Joel's distinctive mark. Of the new songs, Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love," Leonard Cohen's "Light as the Breeze" (originally released on a 1995 Cohen tribute album) and the Carole King-Jerry Goffin standard, "Hey Girl," it is only "Girl" that glistens. Perhaps it is a good thing that Joel will break from the pop realm for a bit (though he is heading to the road with Elton John again early next year), because most of the songs on "Volume III" are the work of a weary man who doesn't seem to be having much fun anymore. At the Nassau Coliseum, in front of a sold-out house of 18,000, the Piano Man worked a two-hour-plus greatest-hits program featuring 23 songs. You might expect Joel to be rusty after his concert layoff, but it seems that being in front of a hometown crowd energized the goateed pop star. He connected with his fellow Long Islanders by reminiscing with them about old high-school teachers, cutting classes and singing doo-wop in the underpass near Field 4 at Jones Beach. Although it was staged simply, this show should have been performed in the round. To counter the restrictions of sitting behind his baby grand, Joel's Steinway spun slowly on a Lazy Susan. He also had keyboards stashed around the stage so he could occasionally play to the fans who bought seats behind the stage. The crowd that Joel attracted, who stayed seated during much of the night, was as middle-aged as most of his greatest hits. To remind them of their youth, Joel opened with a song about the "Angry Young Man" and continued full-circle into his ode about blue-collar life called "Allentown."

Woodin The following is a review and set list from the Billy Joel and Elton John Summer of 1994 concert held on Saturday, 7/9, at Philadelphia's Veteran's Stadium. This was the second show on the tour, and the concert where Billy's great drummer, Liberty DeVitto, was taken to the hospital. This review was originally posted on the Internet mailing list and Usenet group, and on America On-Line. The first impression you get when you enter the stadium is how beautiful the stage is. It is a large oval with piano keys painted in the front. There are two black grand pianos facing each other. Billy's piano (Steinway) is stage left and Elton's (Yamaha) is stage right. Also on stage right is a large American flag and Billy's name. Stage left has a large Union Jack and Elton's name. There are two large video screens on each side of the stage. They are initially draped but revealed at dusk. The sound is amazing, especially for a stadium show. Brian Ruggles and his crew did an excellent job. The levels were good without being too loud. The mixing of instruments and voices was well done. I believe there were two soundboards, one for each performer and his respective band.

David Lewis PopMatters Comics Critic I 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert Songs in the Attic and Kohulept The opening pair of tunes are really Joel's only self-referential selections; "Beethoven's Ninth Symphony" notes both the legendary feel of the evening and Joel's newest move from pop to classical composition. "Big Shot," the song of a loser who thinks he's more than he is, nicely deflates that idea pompousness even as it delivers a big, rock opening. 2000 Years: The Millenium Concert accomplishes the same feat. No one track makes it worth purchasing; no one song is Joel's finest hour. However, it's the interconnectiveness of Joel to the crowd, of the place to the time, and of the songs to one and another that makes the experience of listening to it wholly worthwhile.
