Joe Bob's Drive In Review
by Joe Bob Briggs
May 25, 1996 "Pray For Death" S ho Kosugi is the best kung fu man since Bruce Lee. Forget Jackie Chan. Forget Jet Lee. Forget Bruce Lei, Bruce Li, Bruce Lea and Bruce Leigh. It's no wonder that they're giving Hong Kong back to the Commies. They haven't turned out a world-class thwacker since 1974, when Bruce's head blew up. "Pray for Death," which I discovered in France in the 1980s, is the first movie ever made about a Japaheeno ninja who joins a neighborhood improvement group. All Sho wants to do is take his little Japaheeno wife to Houston, buy an old house, lay a little bathroom tile, replace some wood shingles and play some Frisbee with his Yokohama younguns. Unfortunately, there's this mush-mouth mobster named Limehouse that gets his jollies out of pouring gasoline on people and saying, "Hey, how about a Viking funeral?" And he decides a Japaheeno family would be just the right people to take the blame for some missing California nose candy. So first he kidnaps Sho's little kid, then he gets two Cro-Magnon men in a pickup to run over the other kid and Sho's wife, and then he sneaks into Sho's wife's hospital room, fiddles around with her life support equipment, and goes, "Whoops!"

By Bill Hersey "It will be the best ball in Tokyo," I was told by Dewi Sukarno, Japanese widow of the late Indonesian President Sukarno, when she asked me to invite a group of "interesting foreign friends" to her Imperial Byzantine Charity Ball and Gala Banquet 2001. As Ron and Maria Anderson said later, it turned out to be an unusual, different and enjoyable evening. It was pouring rain that evening, and I didn't think I was ever going to find the venue, Tokyo Meguro Gajoen. I almost gave up but am glad I did not. My guests along with several Japanese "dukes, duchesses, counts and countesses," many who were honored, knighted or promoted early that day, were invited to the VIP room to meet the special guests of honor, Prince and Princess Henri Constantine Paleologo.

By Jim Merk Start with "Romeo and Juliet", add the choreography and singing of "West Side Story", change the ending so there are no winners or losers, and you have Sho Kosugi's "The Ninjas from Hollywood Japan Tour 2001". Sho Kosugi is Japan's most famous living ninja. After winning martial arts tournaments around the world, he turned his attention to acting. He has starred in more than 11 movies in which his martial arts talents get used to the fullest. In addition, he has been featured in dozens of other films (not always for his martial arts expertise). He has directed a movie and produced others as well. This month he brings his Hollywood studio students to Japan to refresh the image of ninja and bring some good fun. Weekender caught up with Kosugi while he was prepping his shows and got a few insights into the production. Tokyo Weekender: If you would, please sketch out the story you are bringing to Tokyo. Sho Kosugi: It is based on "West Side Story", but involves 'gangs' of ninja - one from New York and one from Los Angeles.

REVENGE OF THE NINJA
1982, United States. Starring Sho Kosugi, Kane Kosugi, Keith Vitali, Virgil Frye, Ashley Ferrare, Mario Gallo, Arthur Roberts. Directed by Sam Firstenberg. Review by Keith Allison Sometimes, real life events contribute to the effectiveness of an on-screen story. A tremendous act of synchronicity results in the alignment of elements, each one falling into place so perfectly that it could never be orchestrated by anything but nature itself. Such is the case with the mini-flood of ninja movies during the 1980s, and the life of the star of most of the movies a man named Sho Kosugi. No one had heard of Sho Kosugi, but when the ninja craze hit American shores, he suddenly stepped out of the shadows and into the limelight, bringing to our attention the secret tactics and lives of the mysterious warriors known as ninja. When the craze finally died out, Sho Kosugi vanished back into the shadows without a trace. Some said he went into hiding, pursued by an ancient sect of ninja who wanted to kill him for divulging their secrets to the world. Some say that to this very day he is kicked back and living the good life in some secret mansion alongside Bruce Lee, also in hiding from those who would seek to murder him. Others say he is living life as a washed-up has-been, possibly working at a Big Lots.

PRAY FOR DEATH
1985, United States. Starring Sho Kosugi, Kane Kosugi, Shane Kosugi, James Booth, Donna Kei Benz, Norman Burton, Matthew Faison, Parley Baer, Robert Ito, Michael Constantine, Alan Amiel, Woody Watson, Charles Grueber, Nik Hagler, Chris Wycliff. Directed by Gordon Hessler. Review by Keith Allison Just when you thought America's cities were getting safer (as our suburbs and rural towns get more dangerous), you leave the house to walk down to the corner bodego and catch sight of a bunch of cops fighting with a ninja. It's more than likely that at some point the ninja throws down an eggshell grenade and disappears into a puff of red smoke. Or maybe you stumble upon a couple of ninjas all fighting each other in the middle of 2nd Avenue. It may sound weird to our late 1990s ears, but way back in the 1980s, this is how things were. America's cities were infested with ninjas, usually wearing the traditional black ninja suit, but sometimes also wearing shiny gold, red, green, or purple outfits. The urban ninja is not above a fashion statement, after all. Statistics estimate that in the early- to mid-1980s, for every thousand cockroaches in a city, there were also five ninjas. Since every American city has a cockroach population numbering in the hundreds of millions, you can bet that's quite a few ninjas along for the ride.

ZZA: Can you tell us about SKI (Sho Kosugi Institute) and why you started it?
SK: Ten years ago I started receiving letters and requests to teach martial arts and acting, but at that time I was too busy to do anything about it. I was acting, directing, producing, raising three children and I needed time for my own training. I still train three hours a day. Five years ago I decided to make a school for Asians to give them a chance to become actors. I went to the States when I was 19 years old, and I wanted to give kids the same opportunity I had had. Our first plans were to make a big acting school in Hollywood with a 50 million US dollar budget, but unfortunately that did not work out. We already had about 20 people who were ready to attend this new school, so we decided to make a smaller school instead.
ZZA: How many schools are there at the moment and are there plans to expand to other countries?

Night and Fog in Japan
(1960) 107m. Fascinating story about Japanese students of the 1950s and 60s. Initially withheld from release in Japan as being too politically sensitive. D: Nagisa Oshima.
9 Deaths of the Ninja (1984) The film begins with a training demo of the D.A.R.T. team, an anti-terrorist group. Sho Kosugi plays a ninja who was forced to leave his sect because he had too much compassion (this is told in a flashback segment). Together with the other members of the D.A.R.T. team, he rescues a group of tourists who have been kidnapped. A funny movie that was not really intended to be funny. (If you're a fan of Sho Kosugi you will probably like this film. If not ...? The production is very cheap and Sho's voice is dubbed in this really deep American voice. The supporting cast features some really bad actors. However, I like this movie quite a bit. It's a lot of fun and there are some great fight scenes. Richard) [Daniel Richard]

Rage of Honor (1986) The story is simple: DEA Agent Shiro Tanaka (played by Sho Kosugi) seeks to honor his partner by getting his murderer. "He will go anywhere, do anything, and stop at nothing. His mission: to avenge the dead." (A great martial arts film, and Sho's last "ninja" film. The ninja craze was nearly over, and Sho wanted to branch out. He uses a wide variety of ninja weapons and gadgets, sort of a ninja 007, a ninja avenger if you will. One martial arts magazine even called him 00-SHO. Although it is never revealed in the film that he is a ninja, the weapons and skills he uses speak volumes. He also battles ninjas on two occasions, and defeats them easily. The fights are great as always. There are more stunts than in his previous films, and the action quota is upgraded. Richard) [Daniel Richard]

ENTER THE NINJA 1981, USA. Starring Franco Nero, Susan George, Alex Courtney, Sho Kosugi. Directed by Menahem Golan "A true ninja doesn't kill, he eliminates." - Cole I can't remember the last time I had so much fun watching such a bad movie. Enter the Ninja is perfect fodder for the now defunct Mystery Science Theater 3000 TV show. But you don't need Mike and the 'bots for this one it's too easy to do it yourself. No doubt about it, this is a great party film. And it is really, really terrible. Cole decides to travel from there to the Phillipines to meet an old friend. "I won't stay for long," he says, "I like to keep moving." He's like the Incredible Hulk The Ninja Years. He arrives in Manila only to find his old marine chum Frank (Alex Courtney), who looks like Art Garfunkle but sounds like Charlton Heston. These aren't his only problems, it turns out Frank is being harassed by the locals into selling his property, and its driving him to drink. Oh, yes, and he's married to an all-eighties woman (Susan George) in tight blue jeans and knotted-up button-down shirt, but he's completely impotent. And he likes to watch cock fights, the psychological implications of which I do not wish to imagine.

Franco Nero...as the good guy. Kosugi as the bad guy. Hope you can stand 80's cheese. Full Review Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot In every generation there comes an individual who creates a world. A pioneer, revolutionary, messiah, prophet, and occasionally, pariah, all at the same time, that individual breaks down walls, creates new doorways of perception, even changes the way of life itself, and ensures that each decade becomes its own world. There's usually more than one such individual for every generation, and their impacts all almost always debatable in terms of importance compared to each other. And, surprisingly, they run the gamut of what could ever be said constitutes a leader; James Dean. Jim Morrison. Redd Foxx. John Wayne. George Jefferson. Michael Jackson. Shaft. Hulk Hogan. Kurt Cobain. Al Bundy. In the 1980s one of those men was Sho Kosugi.
